A fun, goof-ass fighting game, even if I still don't think it feels much like "Guilty Gear." I happen to rather like what this game turned out to be, so that's okay. I push big buttons and I get big counter hit and I feel good about myself.

There are a lot of issues with connections in the lobbies, and the game taking three or four minutes to connect to the server every time you boot it up is frustrating, but the quality of the online matches blows away all my complaints. I can count on my fingers the number of matches I've had in this game that were uncomfortable to play, and I've logged dozens more hours on the PS4 too. There's absolutely no going back to games without well-implemented rollback for me -- sorry, Granblue Versus; you're a lovely game, but Strive is also a lovely game and it actually works online.

If you're into fighting games at all, Strive gets my highest recommendation. It doesn't have much for single-player modes -- and in fact, it has one of the most frustrating Arcade Mode bosses I've ever seen in a fighting game -- so prepare yourself to go online and get thrown to the dolphins.

So there's one really important aspect of this game which isn't highlighted in the English store page right now:

You have no "basic attack". Each character has a powerful, long-lasting special attack (as seen in the trailer), but that comes on a long, 30-second timer. In order to survive, you need to learn when to deploy that attack so you can take out as many dangerous enemies as possible, and when you're going to need to run and jump for your life. It's more like a bomb in a shmup than anything I've seen in a platformer.

The simplicity and fast pace of the game scratches a very sort of "arcade" itch, and making multiple attempts on the tower to try and work out the safest route before the end of the day is satisfying. Do you like grabbing coins and avoiding damage for Big Points? Of course you do. Figuring out how to clear out a dangerous room and make it up to the next floor quick enough to hit the fast cycle on the moving platforms is one of life's great joys.

But if you're looking for the "character build" aspect of the roguelike format, you might be a bit disappointed. As of this writing, there's not a lot of variety in the Artifacts you pick up after bosses (and sometimes from the graves of other players). Virtually all of the artifacts will help keep you alive, and some are extremely valuable (getting the "3HP recovery after each floor" one early on is a massive boon), but none of them are very interesting, or have any major effect on what playstyle you're going to use for the run. They're, well, much more like the power-ups in an arcade game than anything else.

I'm interested to see how later additions will play with the flow of the game. And the graphics are very cute.

They added (beta) rollbacks, so now you can actually play this game online with other people!

Features The Most Difficult Moral Choice In A Videogame, Ever.

And I don't mean "killing or not killing." That's incidental. The world of Undertale is too small and too connected for you to not notice the consequences of being a MURDERER; though if you're absolutely determined to kill everyone in your path, it's prepared an appropriately miserable experience for you. And that's cool. Just not sure why you'd want to play a goofy, charming videogame about lovable dimwits that way.

Don't want to get into specifics about what this game does right, because that would spoil (yes) some great moments. So I'll just say this game reminds me in some ways of NIER; they both cleverly integrate the mechanics of "videogame" with the story they're telling... and, well, I just said I wasn't going to talk about specifics. Go with your gut on this one: if the screenshots and trailer look neat to you, play it.

Is it as good as Dark Souls? Probably not. Is it still great? Definitely.

A gamepad's still the best way to play, but mouse and keyboard controls almost work this time. The built-in mouse button bindings are totally broken, though. I can't get the lunge or guard break attacks to come out using the mouse button bindings -- keyboard works fine, as does using the side buttons on my mouse that pretend to be keys. It also has a huge problem with rapidly clicking the mouse, even if you disable the "double click for a heavy attack" mapping. Hell, you can run forward mashing RMB and never once swing your blade! Guess From had to keep SOMETHING broken.

This is ancient history now, but for a while, back around 2005 or so, there was a perception, largely created by a single translation group, that the "visual novel," a format of linear text adventure that grew out of the Japanese PC games scene, might actually have something to offer beyond cheap titillation. They chose short, indie works like narcissu, Planetarian or OMGWTFBBQ, melodramatic stories of finding that last emotional connection in the moments before your early and miserable death. And then they pretty much stopped doing it (at least for free), because, hell, translating this stuff is a pain, and that was the end of that.

Analogue feels much like the promise of those earlier works. Written in English by a native speaker and skilled writer, with a great sense for how to use the interactive features of the format to really draw you in, in a way that "an ordinary book" can't. It's smart, somber, and complicated; it's a well-told story, and not just "for video games." And really, I just have a thing for simulated terminal interfaces.

The "Dark Souls™" of Demon's Souls™.

But for real, this game's a lot of fun, mostly really well designed, and I'm going to miss it when that piece of crap Games for Windows Live shuts down the servers next year.

if you don't mind the Anime Humor (Ha ha! The blonde guy's into little girls!), Freesia's a fun, leaner take on Stylish Action games like Devil May Cry. No mansions to run through solving puzzles, just wave after wave of enemies to punch and kick the crud out of. The fighting feels a lot like the Tales series, especially the way basic attack chains, special attack commands and defensive abilities work, but minus the need to try and micromanage a squad of incompetent AI assistants. There's not a huge variety in enemy types or arenas, but that's not such a huge deal when a game just feels this solid to play, you dig?

Ys I is a simple, fast-paced action game disguised as an RPG. Maybe too simple for a generation who're used to combo systems, collecting a dozen new abilities, and other new hot features adopted by the genre (and later games in the series). But I like that simplicity! It's a comfortable old friend of a game, with just enough interesting use of its one mechanic (ram the other guy off-center) to last the duration of the adventure.

And then you can play Ys II, which throws in a bunch more toys to play with in a larger world!

Make sure you play in the original 4:3 mode: the zoomed-in mode doesn't quite match the aspect ratio of the original game window, and areas designed around it will feel cramped if you have to scroll more.

There's a fun idea in here: a sidescrolling Borderlands with permadeath, and sessions maxing out at 60 minutes or so. The game has a habit of handing out items that make you nearly immortal, even though you can barely scratch your foes, and if you get a bad set of spawns in the fixed level layouts you'll spend ages mopping up after the teleporter's active. Risk of Rain intends to encourage speed and efficiency, mastering areas and finding optimal strategies, but the game just doesn't kill you enough, in the right ways, to feel satisfying.
