A round bottom flask with a capacity of 1000 ml is filled with 150 grams of ephedrine and a mixture of 40 grams of red phosphorus and 340 ml of 47% hydroiodic acid. This mixture can also be made by mixing 150 grams of iodine crystals and 150 grams of red phosphorus with 300 ml of water. The flask is then attached to a condenser and the mixture is boiled for one day to achieve the best yield and highest octane number. During this process, the mixture becomes red and messy due to the presence of red phosphorus.After boiling, the flask is cooled and diluted with an equal volume of water, and the red phosphorus is filtered out using coffee filters or filter paper. The filtered solution should be a golden color, and if there is still a red color, it can be removed by adding sodium bisulfate or sodium thiosulfate.The acid is neutralized by adding a strong lye solution until the solution becomes strongly basic, and the desired product is converted to a liquid free base. This free base can be sold or used for injection purposes. To form the crystalline hydrochloride salt, a few hundred ml of toluene is added, and the product free base is extracted. If the toluene extract is clear to pale yellow, the product is pure enough to make white crystals by bubbling dry HCl gas through it. If the extract is darker, distillation is necessary to obtain pure product free base.
