TLDR: The game WAS great. Online isn't worth trying to get into if you haven't already. But, if you just want a fun singleplayer story campgain, the game is still acceptable.

At its core, this game is timeless. It's fantastic for wasting time, whether you enjoy roaming around in singleplayer with a mod menu (or playing the campaign) or screwing around in gta online with friends, but the recent monetization updates have really been trying to kill the online aspect of gta. If you are a new player and you are unwilling to purchase money through shark cards or other micro transactions, it's really not worth trying to get into. And even if you are willing to spend the extra money, be prepared to deal with infinite black screen loading bugs (brought on by modders in the lobby) and other griefing from hackers and modders. And even if you get lucky enough to not be in a lobby with them, good luck avoiding idiots riding flying bikes and shooting you with missiles just because you exist in the lobby.

If you like first person, parkour, hack and slash type games that are challenging and make you restart from checkpoints times over until you get it right then you'll like this game. I definitely recommend.
And if you're ballsy you can do hardcore mode after beating the game on normal.
