There are a lot of space simulation games out there, but none have come close to capturing the gritty aesthetic of humanity's future of space travel as Elite: Dangerous.

In the days I have spent trucking disappointed passengers and measly cargo, blowing up rocks for precious minerals (probably my favorite aspect is watching those asteroids go BOOM), and saving systems from a pirate incursion, I have found a community of Commanders who have given so much into a universe that is enriched by the players who participate in it. Immersion in a universe is just as important as the mechanics, which gives soul to the game.

Pros
- You can't just buy your way to victory, you have to earn it
- Multiple activities can earn you credits, and you can earn decent cash doing what you love (mining, bounty hunting, exploring, bio-sampling, trading, passenger ferrying)
- Flying is satisfying, simulating actual vectoring and thrust mechanics, and giving you the ability to out maneuver opponents with skill rather than technology (though technology helps)
- Your actions have consequences, whether by supplying resources to a faction or breaking the law, your changes have an effect on the system and the universe
- The universe is always shared by players, whether playing with other commanders or playing solo. There are no penalties for playing alone
- Horizons and Odyssey adds the aspect of landing on planets, exploring bases, and engaging in first person aspects of the universe
- Beautiful simulated worlds in a universe that's larger than what I can even think of
- Engineering lets you diversify your equipment for particular purposes and material collection is dynamic based on activities
- PowerPlay gives you the opportunity to fight for a side and find yourself apart of the dynamics of system power
- Fighting can be rewarding as flight skill and weapon strategies come into play

Cons
- At times it is a grind, you will have to spend hours on simple tasks to afford the upgrades to make your task easier (but once you have them, it's a breeze)
- Driving SRV's on the surface of low gravity planets can be deadly if you hit the wrong pebble
- A lot of the visuals are lost if you don't have a high-end system to support it

The Community
Unlike other games with massively multiplayer options, this is a game with a community that supports each other. Even if you run into a odd player that just wants to gank you for the thrill, you're more likely to run into a commander making their way through deliveries or returning from deep space exploring, The online resources that support this game like market trackers, exploration databases, and ship building sites, you'll find there's a way to get into something you love and contribute as well.
