I've wanted DayZ for a while, and I finally coughed up the $60 for it. First things first: Is it worth $60? I think so. I wouldn't pay $60 for most games in the state DayZ is in, but DayZ isn't like most games. It can be a bit glitchy, but most of the major bugs seem to have been fixed, and it seldom crashes. The devs seem to be quite active at the moment, a lot of items that were removed from the game a few updates ago are being reworked and reinstated, and at this point in time it feels more or less like the mod. Some might argue that the devs don't deserve any praise, seeing that the game is only getting to mod-levels of detail after 5 years, but given all the bumps on DayZ's development road so far, I don't think it's too terrible. Yes, it would have been nice if DayZ had been released to early access in the state it's in this year, and not 5 years ago, but that's the problem with viral games, by the time you've given the game all the development time it needs, people won't be interested on the level they were at the beginning. Do you think many people will be buying PUBG in 3 years? I think not.
As far as content goes, the game is not jam-packed with things to find, but as I said before, it has gotten to the pont where it is comparable with the ArmA2 mod. And if you find the official servers to be a bit to bare, there are modded servers that add in tons of extra items, cars, clothing variants, guns from junk-grade to endgame, and much more. Most of these servers also have global chat, which really helps the game feel a bit more lively.
So, all things considered, I would definitely recommend this game, but you should read the reviews to decide whether it's right for you.

Got this game on sale for $4, and it was $4 well spent. For a game published in 2004, it still looks pretty good, the CS:S-esque weapon models/shading being the only really dated looking thing. And on top of that, it runs well at ultra high settings on my aging mid-teir PC. The gunplay strikes a nice balance between RnG and tactical gameplay, though the lack of ADS is a bit odd. The tridgens are suitably frightening and deadly, they still give me a chill when I happen to wander into a dark, dusty room full of them. Some of the merc's ability to soak up 5+ bullets without dying irks me a bit, though those are fortunately not the ones with powerful guns, as the snipers/rocketeers seem to take only about 2-3. The story is pretty good, and affords a decent amount of freedom, while at the same time being (IMO) easier to follow than say, ArmA 2.

I did experience 1 crash when loading a save, and a couple of rendering errors when entering vehicles, but nothing game-braking.

The one thing that REALLY pisses me off about the gameplay though, is the merc's ability to spot you and accurately nail you the INSTANT you enter one of those military tents, as if they are made of freaking glass.

All around, it's a great game, even better for the price, and still holds up in 2018.

I really like this game, although it is a bit hard at the beginning (you will spend a lot of time respawning after getting sniped from god knows where). A lot of people complain about the grind, some even calling it pay2win, but though you won't unlock everything on your first day, I don't think it is that unreasonable. And the fun of camping points with an AA gun, or blowing up tanks with Panzerfausts, makes up for any amount of stupid sniper deaths.
