There is no greater modern RPG than Witcher 3. Easy combat on easy difficulties lets you roll through the story at a very practical pace, and if you don't like that simplicity and ease, you can boost the difficulty however high you want. The story and characters are as deep and interesting as in a great TV or film script, and actions and decisions are understandable and empathetic. The two DLCs' length lives up to the reputation of being essentially a full game each in and of themself.

I felt the Oregon Trail met Final Fantasy Tactics (or Shining Force II) in this game. The overworld travel system a la OT was equally brutal, with unexpected dangers and a suspenseful resource squeeze. The tactical RPG style combat was about 80% familiar 20% unfamiliar and just the perfect mix and fun to learn.
