I love this game, it's fantastic. Well balanced and well thought out, made by developers who care.

Then along comes SONY and ruins it. They tried enforcing a connection between Steam and PSN, Due to an overwhelming response from the community, SONY changed their mind and are not forcing PSN linking..

So I'm changing my recommendation back to Positive. It's a great game, the developers don't deserve to be treated so badly by their publisher.

We are watching you SONY! Don't pull this crap - You are being the BAD GUYS!

I have 7000 hours in this game (almost) and while it's had it's ups and downs, no other game has captivated my attention in such a way. If you're new to Elite, dive in, there's so much to see and do. If you're a jaded space dog like me, there's things even I haven't done yet. It's the biggest game universe ever based on real scientific data - what's not to love?

Makes you feel like a badass, the awesome gunplay coupled with.. a freaking energy sword and shield. This game is brilliant arcade shooting like no other.

I know that reading the comments of a project with clearly a lot of work can be crushing for the creative spirit so I shall try to give as constructive a review as I can.

First of all, this is a prototype and not a full game for anyone who might judge it harshly. It's probably meant to convey a mood or an idea rather than something close to the final game. This is how I'll approach this anyway.

First, the good. The atmosphere. The game has a lonely feeling to it, which is sold really well by the graphics. The desolate cities overrun with creatures look pretty good. The quality of the art for this prototype is stellar. Each screenshot is a picture to stare at. It's really nice. I love the details in the designs and nothing seems overly repeated. It has some great parallax scrolling which invokes old 16 bit games like Shadow of the Beast which adds to the mood a lot. The mood also has hints of Another World which is another great game. If this was your intention, well done.

The music is bleak and also adds to the atmosphere. Good work there too.

The rest of the sound effects are not as good, but I'd put that down to the nature of the project - the prototype. I'd say that if as much attention was placed on the sound as has been on the background visuals, it'll be good.

The character animation though and main character design is not strong enough in my opinion. I'd say a few more design iterations are needed here to make a character who is more memorable and stands out. The animation itself is serviceable for a prototype but it needs more "feeling" it is quite mechanical at the moment.

I'd say the weakest part of the prototype right now is the control system. I like the Turricanesque style but it doesn't flow well at all. It's fairly awkward - especially in the platform areas. In some sections of the game I was always hitting my head on lower platforms which reminded me I'd need to crawl there but I think if the player controller was more fluid, it would be a lot more intuitive. Turning from one side to the other should feel empowering - especially during combat. The aiming controls don't work when the character is facing the opposite direction and this feels very restrictive. Instead, you may want to have the player always facing the cursor and walks forwards or backwards depending on which button is pressed so you're always facing where the action is. By doing that the player will always feel like their inputs count towards the action instead of just setting up a state machine so that further actions can be allowed.
Jumping feels limp really, there's no weight to the character. Animation and control is very tricky to get right. Keep at it though and you'll have something which players feel comfortable with. The characters seems like it should have a decent amount of weight and that can be conveyed through the animation and movement. If his suit is helping him to jump, consider some kind of jet pack assist where it gives him a boost, but not enough to fly.

The vehicle sections I played seemed OK. I would hope there would be more gameplay added in the future to support them. They don't currently feel good to drive though so I'd recommend polishing the vehicle controller as well to get that sweet spot.

All in all, I like where you're going with this. Keep at it and don't get dissuaded. What you have made so far looks like it's taken a long time to put together. So get as much feedback as you can - positive and negative, re-focus your efforts and keep going. You'll have something you can be really proud of before too long.

After 2 years of bad reviews and worse public response after over promising and under-delivering to an extreme that's not been witnessed in the industry before - even more than Peter Molyneux - and after enduring the backlash which came with it, the team at Hello Games has done what no-one ever expected. They've made the broken husk of a game they originally released into something that's not only good, but it's fun to play.

Is it perfect? No, not by a long way. Is it a lot of fun with your friends?
Yes, absolutely. It's a lot of fun.

On top of that, one of the things which has become apparent from this release is that Hello Games believes in this game, so much that they released all of the updates over the last 2 years for free, and Next is no exception.

I don't normally write reviews and I was initially stung when the game first came out - I fell for the hype even though I tried not to, but it promised so much. Now it delivers on a lot of that, refines a lot of the old mechanisms, and gives an experience unlike anything else on the market, certainly that I've seen and looks amazing.

The flight mechanics are still sloppy though and animal behaviour isn't as natural as I hoped, so Hello Games needs to address that, but they're releasing updates pretty much every week now.

Do I recommend this game? Yes.. and I have. Hello games turned me around from a cynic to someone who enjoys their game and that's hard to do.

This game is a welcome revival of the Adventure game which improves upon the genre. Gone are the almost random logic puzzles instead the story flows seamlessly with a few puzzles which make you scratch your head for a little and then having a moment of realization after talking to someone, discovering something or uncovering a new detail. The art style is gorgeous, the soundtrack is stunning and the story is unique and engaging. The game will be split into 2 acts. If Act II is anywhere as good as Act I it will be a classic.
