Short Answer: Look at my playtime, that's real, loved every moment.

Long Answer: Over a decade after its release I've found nothing quite like it. It's what I'd call an "Open Book" roguelike. Instead of relying on keeping key information from you, it makes everything you need to know available to you and then just pits you against brutally unfair odds and you figure out how to be even more unfair in response. Even on the hardest difficulty mode vanilla you can stack the nonsense higher and win, which I've done multiple times through different methods. The game's more or less a solved problem to me now and it's now a matter of finding increasingly silly ways to beat it on its hardest difficulty setting. And that's the appeal, it is a complex but solvable problem. If you want a big, complex problem to solve at your leisure and at your own pace then Dredmor is an excellent game for you. Just make sure to get all the DLC because they contain essential Quality of Life features.

This is a classless traditional roguelike with highly detailed open world simulation with freedom to roam right from the start. It reminds me of Dungeons of Dredmor, in terms of being an "open book" Roguelike (there is detailed in game explanations of how everything works, nothing important is hidden from you) and Outward (you are free to roam and survive, without judgement from the developer).

There is no set story except the one you make for yourself. If you just want to be a simple wandering adventurer, you can. If you want to found a town and start a dynasty, that's recently been added. Future updates might even allow you to become a conquering warlord.

It has broad scope in viable builds and a friendly community on the developer Discord. It is highly recommended you read up on how the potential system works, so that you build effectively and avoid unnecessary restarts. The short version at the time of writing is you can max out 5 skills, in your youth. It's best for at least 3 of them to be combat skills, so your stats are adequate in the late game.

TL;DR: Outward feels very much like a love letter to both Dark Souls and Morrowind, made by people who had a really good understanding of what made both of those games great.

HOW IS IT LIKE DARK SOULS?
The combat is very similar to Dark Souls - 3rd person with a great deal of emphasis on positioning and timing in order to win fights.
Your character is often a lot more weak and vulnerable than who they are fighting and that sense of vulnerability never really goes away.
There's no "Experience points" or "Levelling up" or other means of becoming more numerically powerful by just grinding lots of trash mobs.
Unless you choose Hardcore mode, there's no permadeath. You just wake up some time later, somewhere else and somewhat the worse for wear.
Success in combat is very much about preparation. If you have the right equipment, right skills on quickbar and right buffs prepared, then you can stack the odds in your favour and come out on top fighting enemies numerically superior to you. Get sloppy and trash mobs can ruin your whole day.
No save scumming! Whatever you do is permanent for that character.
Almost everything you can see, is something you can travel to.

HOW IS IT LIKE MORROWIND?
There's always multiple ways of dealing with a problem, the suitability of which varies depending on situation or play style.
The aesthetic of the game creates a feeling of a very "alien" world, which is very different to both our own and conventional fantasy settings based on Medieval Europe.
It uses very big, hand crafted areas designed to give a feeling of vastness while also using terrain cleverly to use space efficiently.
It's more than happy to give you enough rope to hang yourself with and pretty much expects you to screw up your first few attempts at playing it.

HOW IS IT UNIQUE?
The magic system is a big source of uniqueness. For a start, it's completely optional. You will only get magic if you go out of your way to visit the Wizards at Conflux Mountain.
The story - You're closer to being a (very violent) private detective than a "Chosen one". Without spoiling too much, the story hinges early on a circumstance where you have to pay off a debt in order to avoid being ostracised. Ironically, to accomplish this, you end up displaying a level of independence and resourcefullness which makes others uncomfortable with you remaining in their village. And so they start coming up with excuses to send you out into the wilderness to solve difficult problems.
The survival mechanics turn it into more of a comfy woodsman simulator rather than an annoyance as they can with other RPGs.
Your income comes primarily from crafting.
Progression is almost entirely based on money, with some passive buffs you get from some of the later quests.
Once you join a faction and start their quest line, most quests are timed. You have to stay focused on completing them if you want to get them done on time and get the buff rewards they offer. Some quests will even penalise you with a permanent debuff if you spend too long finishing them.

While it's still clearly a work in progress, what's currently there is promising. Presentation and Game Feel are really on point and you can do some interesting things with the game's skill and perk system once you get to grips with how it works.

A very fun and innovative Rogue-lite with some deep and crunchy systems that you can get your teeth into and which allows a diversity of play styles.

While there is certainly some rough edges (typos, general jank, the occasional crash) the developer is committed to post release support and updates to improve the game and add more features, and is also proactive about communicating with the players.

I've written a guide to help new players better get to grips with the basics of the gameplay systems and choices on offer, to help them have a more fun experience starting out. That's how good I think the game is, it's been worth more than just my money, it's been worth my time in contributing to help make it more accessible to new players. I hope you enjoy the game and check out the guide to help make your new player experience a positive one!

I'd love to say I enjoyed playing this game.

Except I'd need to boot it sucessfully first in order to do that and unfortunately, on my machine, the game freezes on boot.

I went to the forums to see if this was a known issue, saw a post over a week old from someone with the same issue who had gone to the trouble of posting a detailed log.

For their trouble, they received no response from anyone - fan or developer.

Welp, thank goodness for refunds!

Overall:
A blend of JRPG mechanics and WRPG presentation. It really feels like playing through a highlights package of all the series funniest moments. The focus is on the weird and wacky stuff from the show's long run, rather than anything political or topical. The game is short (approx 10 hours) and not particularly challenging, but lots of fun while it lasts. Worth buying at full price for long-time fans of the show who have been watching it since the 90s, teenage/college age gamers might be better off waiting for a sale.

Incidentally, as an Australian, I played the censored version. I'm of the opinion that Matt & Trey's open contempt for the Australian Classification Board is actually funnier than the scenes that were censored.

Pros:
* Amazing presentation - indistinguishable from the cartoons
* Genuinely funny humor
* Fun gameplay in first half of game - wide variety of viable combat tactics
* Flexible class system - Classes give unique abilities, but don't constrain your playstyle
* Huge amount of hidden content and references from the series
* Very stable for an Obsidian game - bugs are relatively minor, only encountered a game-stopping bug once (reloaded, bug did not re-occur).

Cons:

* Checkpoint based saves take 90s Nostalgia a bit too far
* Armor scaling issues and widespread immunity to status effects in the late game restrict viable combat tactics
* Keyboard layout not adjustable or even visible - bothersome if you forget which keys did what
* Zombies. The second half of the game mostly consists of zombies and they're everything bad about videogame zombies. Using "spoilers" to hide a radical gameplay shift and resultant dip in overall quality isn't an ethical move.
