"Heheh, gun rhymes with fun for a reason, stranger! Haha."

Requiem's title has me thinking of Limmy yelling down a phone at someone the word repeatedly. And that's probably me now when someone's asking for Game recommendations.

I enjoyed my time playing RE Requiem. The game was set up well by splitting the moments up between the protagonists well; sections of survival horror like RE7 before the boat split with moments where you just get to tear things up with Leon. It works pretty well, It was also good to have moments where I just had to pause the game and NOPE a moment from being grabbed by them Ghoulies. After Village's action lite stance and less horror that was good for the soul.

The game runs pretty stable 1440p RT on no upscaling. Chunks of the writing and premise within the game are weak and questionable as the devs have gone for grandiose sequences that look like they'd belong in Devil May Cry 5. That's fitting in a way with how Dante was based off the original Leon model for the original Resident Evil 4.

While I've a couple of gripes with some of the things in Grace's scenario they make sense within horror trappings. That's not a fault I felt with the voice actors which I felt with the 4 remake, Grace and Leon this time felt right. And with the bloke playing Wesker playing Zeno that was fine too which left me wondering a little about direction of 4 some more. Victor Gideon was alright too.

Game has a couple of fleeting moments of puzzle shenanigans and hunting to find stuff. The yellow paint being there but not as obnoxious was fine too. With that being said, I enjoyed the game a lot and if you've not played any of the modern ones it would be fine to skip RE7's boat segment and go straight here.

I recommend Atomfall but it is with caveats so I would recommend trying the game on Gamepass or on sale. Gameplay is very much standard immersive sim fare like a Bioshock crossed with a very light bit of Fallout, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Rebellion's Sniper Elite games.

it triggers my inner autist hard. Seeing 1965 number plates on trucks in the game when it's meant to be set in 1962 was a mild irritation, along with all the rusted out Conqueror tanks while they felt cursed and set to be complete rust buckets I could hand wave away. There were plenty of funny pop culture references that were very subtle. All bar one anyroad involving a blue box.

It's a game meant to be set in Cumbria, but there's not one Cumbrian bit of craic (chatter) in the game, and villagers sounding Welsh rankled me. Felt as tonally off as a bunch of Yorkshiremen would have been in The Prisoner. And oh yeah, the game's freeform leads style of narrative gameplay to string the gamer along felt as flat as Fallout 3 and 4. To some they enjoy that. I didn't so much.

I just enjoyed it being something a bit different in spite of its quirks and oddities, but apart from one hyper aggressive faction that had some character to it, the game's world felt a little flat, apart from the sheer difficulty being ammo sponges in certain areas and a serious case of ammo rationing. My personal preference would have been an actually harder game and maybe to see some actual weather to it as well that's common in Northern England: Overcast grey days to offset all the fauna and plenty of rainfall.

It's good to see Rebellion trying something new instead of another Sniper Elite game. Maybe one day they'll do something like a return to Battlezone since they have the IP rights to that now (I loved that game and its premise back in the day) or something set in Mega City One.

This game releasing compelled me to complete the Revenge of Shinobi as I'd failed to do that on my Sega MD/Genesis back in the day. I didn't want to play it until then because that final boss and its damn hair attack on Joe Musashi lived in memory like the game laughing at me. Can't have that.

Playing the game prepared me for a bunch of the platforming memes which have been ramped up to more modern Metroidvania/Super Meat Boy tier flow movement platforming. While there's a lot less cheap deaths (Revenge of Shinobi's stage 7 docks is a special level in hell for getting done. Don't believe me? Give it a try.) there are still plenty of moments of getting done over by the required perfect timing that's required. And I'm fine with that. To some for sure that will be a turn off, for me it was a good chuckle.

The combat is grossly different and a bit more of a cross between metroidvania (couple of the bosses feel straight Castlevania with the attack patterns involved and that's fine) and SoR 4 including combos and being able to chain beatdowns together. Guys get tougher as the game goes on but while it might feel cruel at a couple of points most of the fights are relatively fair and if you respect the game's mechanics it teaches you, you can have a jolly time juggling people, bullying armoured people and knocking enemies off or driving them into instant death pits. A glorious bit of revenge.

Like Streets of Rage 4 beforehand, Lizardcube have made sure to keep the game as a love letter to old Sega even with the modern game styling. Joe is voiced perfectly by Mr Daytona USA himself, Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, and his default costume is his Revenge outfit. Story isn't left to the intro idle, it's very voiced and both the Eng/JP voice work in the game is fine.

While a couple of the platforming segments did irritate especially the chases to avoid dying I enjoyed a lot about this game and would happily recommend.

It looked okay but my word, it feels bad, the rounds are short and the audio presentation made me wish I was deaf so I couldn't hear it.

I saw another guy negatively review this and mention a classic bit of internet culture involving a man's rear end, I think I just saw what the Goats see and I wish I hadn't.

Game needs a lot more time in the oven, better UI presentation, less AI sounding voices and stretching out of stages to be more than a thirty second affair.

[Recieved as pre-order bonus for the System Shock remake. Thanks Nightdive]

It's System Shock 2 as I know and have loved all these years. It's more an improved resolution and streamlined co-op play. Having a seperate save is okay but the achievements not working in MP was odd but I got why they've turned it off.

The only serious issue I can note is when playing co-op with friends the host was the only player who could attack turrets. We burned a lot of AP rounds trying to figure out what was on with the game so be warned fellow insects.

SHODAN can talk down to me all day long. I've heard it for so many years her malevolence is like dulcet tones.

I had a lot more fun on this in 104 minutes than I did the new Doom game.

I'm a simple man. It took me five hours to be able to get to the Arcade. A lot of the game's combat is fine and the ship combat while basic is pretty fun too. It''s always a wild time in a Yakuza game when you're the wahoo-he-he-he-he-he eyepatch "KIRYU-CHAN" man.

Two different versions of Daytona USA 2 Sega Racing Classic 2 next to each other. Battle on the Edge AND Power Edition. Back in the day when we had arcades in my town I burned a fair amount of money in them I earned from Newspaper rounds to play Daytona Sega Racing Classic and Sega Rally. They were my go-to games.

I've been beating people up now instead to fund the habit. Time goes forward, nothing changes. Thank you Sega.

I have strongly mixed feelings about this game that border on the edge of it being a damn good game. I will try to elaborate on it.

I never thought I'd think regularly in a souls game "Here's the perfect spot for an arena" and then proceed to see the health bar pop up on a first playthrough. Sure this is Journey to the West 2: Monkey Boogaloo for sure, but the game is more than that.

I enjoyed the fact that you were not punished heavily for dying. I enjoyed the ability to respec on the fly. I LOVED the Loong fights. Black Loong had me vibing as the attacks connected WITH THE MUSIC, I had to allcaps because that sort of thing is rare in these games. That blew my socks off for real fr.

The Might transformations split up a little of the tedium of having the same staff weapon for the whole game, the parry system (see-through) never really connected with me. Some of the bosses annoyed me but in retrospect they had gimmicks that I had forgotten I had picked up what I needed for earlier to make them less of a chore than they were.

In saying that, Black Myth: Wukong is a good soulsalike game. I did not enjoy it as much as the other Unreal Engine based Lies of P, but I did enjoy it. When the game flows, it is solid fun. It just felt a lot more repetitive than the aforementioned or Sekiro or others, probably because there were too many boss fights put into the game that were just faceroll events.

Selaco is a game that wears its influences very much on the shoulders with a wink and a grin.

F.E.A.R. based combat and AI behaviours? Firm check. [Edit to add: The AI flanks you. It adjusts to your tactics. They hear you or see the flashlight on a wall and they're on you.]

Build engine-tier world interactivity? Check, right down to being able to kick baddies heads around.

IgarashiVania-like world that can be explored and constantly return to parts with newer clearance to open up locked areas? Check. It's worth getting the clearances for Starlight.

Doom style maps that are easy to get lost in and a solid weapon inventory? Check.
System Shock-style big brain reading through all the emails to find out where the fire extinguishers are when you're already on fire and key codes? Check.

Many games are lucky to pull off one of the aspects of a first person action game in that list, but this game seems to do all of the above pretty well, and to do it as a classic Doom mod. Combat rarely feels too strained even when the enemy are pulling out all manner of escalation tactics as your weaponry is very powerful. Look on this Shotgun, Ye Doom 3, and Despair!

My only serious critique of the game after playing on Captain difficulty would be it being so easy to get lost in this maze of a game and maybe to those who aren't used to labyrinthine maps of the game world it will be too much for somebody not into the joys of classic game design. I am looking forward to see what comes with it still being in early access. This game running on GZDoom is downright incredible. And I love the System Shock easter egg in there, well played Altered Orbit.

EDIT 1 27/1/25:
tl,dr: Not changing my positive review even though the devs fell for the trap of what Louis Rossmann calls "The Premise of A holes."

The devs have fallen into social media drama with failed Game journos and doxxers that demand higher standards than they hold themselves to, that constantly attack their audience for being (INSERT DEROGATORY BUZZWORD HERE) and cringeworthy edgy people that say and do stupid stuff online that are easy to ignore. One of which is terminally on social media instead of making his own game for crying out loud.

The latter type made an alternative game rewards show that had the Selaco trailer in so the fireworks have begun and Altered Orbit instead of letting it flow and go decided to accept the premise of a holes.

tl,dr: EA Canada are a trash company running a social experiment to see how much they can mess with you to make you spend money on their rigged slot machines.

One friend burned over £100 on players and got bugger all and has quit out. One lucked out and had a strong icon team in November, he's disappeared too. The people at Vancouver don't know the game they are working on and the funny things that can happen on the pitch are worse than last years. Slide tackles in one penalty area can result in magic goals at the other end or through assists, Offsides happen for players who are clearly onside and attackers often do not run onto balls or midfielders play through balls that go nowhere near the attacking player who for once has run through on goal.

You can't help but wonder if the people involved aren't trying some social experiment to see how much they can mess with the playerbase or if they could tell the difference between a G string and a guitar string.

Save yourself the money and the sanity. I repeated my mistake because I was ill and my friends had lumped in. Now I've got myself to blame being stuck in an abusive relationship.
