The vanilla game is alright by itself, but it's even better with the expansion and Long War mod. Well worth getting for those reasons.

This game is brutal, and in a good way. It's not because of fighting overpowered enemies all the time, but because it follows the rules of the real world. If you yourself were pitted alone agaisnt a group of two or three armed thugs, would you expect to survive? Being the hero will likely get you killed, so depending on your build, you might have to be a degenerate or not get involved to progress, which really makes you feel like a real human being.

The low-fantasy Roman Empire-like setting also makes this game wonderfully different. There's a severe lack of games like this and this one fills that SPQR shaped hole. Sure, there's a lot of TL;DR in this game, but if you like lore, then you'll appreciate the walls of text.
As for gameplay, it's nothing too special, but it reflects the realness theme well enough. Every enemy will probably be just as deadly as you, which makes things interesting if you plan on fighting.

Overall, this game is well worth trying if you want something that doesn't follow the norms of RPGs. As well as the newest game the devs are working on, which follows the same principles of AoD.
