One of the few games I've 100%'d. Really brings me back to the old days of Newgrounds when I was young. Super fun game with loads of achievements and fails. I would recommend this to people even if they didn't grow up with these games, because it has lots of pop references that'll make you smile. References from anime, other video games, tv shows etc. Clocked in at 7 hours for total completion. I would say it was fully worth my $15, but if you wait for a slight discount, it's even better. Artwork was crisp as well. Just make sure not to play in fullscreen mode. I stubbornly tried it many times, but the further you get into the game, the bigger cutscenes just make it crash constantly. That's the only fault. Game has been out for almost a year and still the same issue. Might be something the devs can't change, but I still endorse the game.

First let me preface this review by saying I bought my first Yakuza game in 2006 when I saw it on the shelf at a local GameStop. I played up until Yakuza 5, when I stopped playing the games for some reason. Fast forward to 2020 when Like a Dragon came out, I realized I had really craved the Yakuza experience once again and I hadn’t played Yakuza 0, Kiwami 1 & 2 (with the new content), Yakuza 6 and Like A Dragon. I wanted to begin my journey again at 0, so I could bring myself back into one of my favorites series once again. Any way onto the review!

I beat the game in around 35 hours and I definitely still have lots of side quest/mini game content I never touched. I dipped my fingers in the Real Estate side story and enjoyed it a lot more than the Cabaret quests for Majima, but I knew I had a lot of games to get through so I didn’t want to get too deep into everything. I’ll be honest, I’ve always been a JAV fan so to see familiar faces all over Kamurocho & Sotenbori was an extra treat. Being able to see short gravure videos in shops was great, along with collecting their telephone cards. There is so much extra content in this game to explore if you want. Japanese games like Koi-Koi, Mahjong, Shogi and such. It’s an extra level of fun that can expand your knowledge of cultures. My favorite mini game out do them all was the karaoke ones. For a long time I’ve enjoyed Japanese rhythm games so it was fun to indulge in that within the Yakuza world. There is something for everyone in just the side content. Also, don’t be afraid of finishing the game if you haven’t finished all the side content as there is a Premium Adventure mode which allows you to freely explore without the boundaries of the main story.

Combat within these games has always been kind of janky but it definitely feels smoother than it did when I first played these games. Majima’s fighting styles were more to my liking (mainly Slugger style) but Kazuma has a style for everyone. Bosses, unlike the other main games do not have auto healing which is a nice QoL change. I always believed that was crap in the other games. The music within boss fights really get you charged up and add an extra level of “heroism” while playing as the protagonists. Everyone is different but I couldn’t play the game for more than 3 hours at a time because I would pump myself up so much from fights that I needed to rest, with the exception of the final sitting which I sat through around 5 hours, because I knew I was in the home stretch.

Now onto the main subject of this review, the storyline. Since I had 5 yakuza games under my belt by the time I played Yakuza 0, I have a certain level of expectations when it comes to this series. I can say without a shred of doubt that this game has the best storyline that I can remember. There are loads of new faces and faces that I remember from future games that are deep and all have their own quirks. The story has its ups and downs but I never felt like I wanted the game to hurry up because it was dragging. Switching between Majima & Kazuma every two chapters was a nice change that gave you a breath of fresh air.

My hands are getting tired typing this on my phone so I’m going to start wrapping this up now. I’m really glad I played this game and welcomed myself back into this vibrant world. The world feels alive with all the noises, crowds and stores/restaurants all over. I lived in Tokyo for two years so this really brought me back. Hearing the Don Xijote music made me think I was on the streets of Akiba once again. I definitely recommend this game to fans of the series and newcomers alike. If you have played the other games you’ll enjoy the Easter eggs within the side quests talking about characters you know and love from the future games so seeing their past really adds a level of depth to the world. Newcomers will likewise enjoy seeing the young lives of the major players in the following games which set the stage. I couldn’t recommend this game enough, so if you have any interest in crime dramas or Japanese culture, I know you’ll enjoy this game.

This game is insanely fun. I loved their previous game Shadowhand, so this improves on it. As always it has great dueling matches, but has much more depth to it when compared to the previous entry. It has a skill tree, multiple types of attacks and defenses and lots of varying passive and active abilities. Just like their last game I started on Nightmare and I've had to restart matches multiple times. It's great fun for when you want to unwind

I'm not even halfway through Book 2 yet, but I can already say this is an amazing adventure. 13 hours in so far and it is beautiful and the story is deep. Pacing is slow at the beginning but just trust me, continue on and you will be rewarded with a mature and engrossing story. Art shading is great on the eyes and characters all have their own struggles and depth to them. The game is mostly on rails with little puzzling but the game more has to do with character interaction. Your choices will change people's impressions of you and how you deal with different events, which is great for a point and click game which usually doesn't have many choices left up to the player. I wholeheartedly recommend this game for anyone looking for a grim, medieval adventure that will make you feel.

I brushed this game off years ago because I was never equipped to deal with survival horror, my favorite games were always RPGs and online shooters but I picked up the Redux version of this recently and blew through it. The story and atmosphere kept me going. Even when the game got scary and the sections where I was alone ripped me up inside, I adapted and wanted to get past the level to see the next bit of story. Redux version looks beautiful when maxxed out, even though it is 8 or so years old. Loved the different stations, all the side conversations you could listen to, and all the variety of weapons. I played Normal Spartan so I wasn't getting the "full" experience of Ranger Hardcore, but I still had to watch my back and tread carefully. The easiest difficulty still felt like a challenge, which was fun.

I recommend this game and the sequel very much. I cannot wait for Exodus to come out next year!

I didn't know what to expect, but these past almost three hours have been mind-blowing. Go into this completely blind. Just do it. You won't regret it

This game was very good. 15-30min but it's free so all good. Really brought me back to the early 2000's with AIM and awkward convos of people growing apart and stuff like this. Hits home hard
