Plays great. Loved getting free DLC just before BL3 came out. Not as funny as I remember.

This game is very good if you enjoy retro-styled action platformers. Good challenge, a ton of content, and lots of fun.

Trine is a 2D platformer where you can switch between three different playable characters, each with their own strengths and abilities. The hallmark of the game is its use of physics to manipulate the environment, both to defeat enemies and solve environmental puzzles.

The Enchanted Edition of the game looks really nice, the controls feel smooth and responsive, and there is some really smart level design throughout the game. But for some reason, Trine didn't grab me at first. It seemed like a game I should like, but the early levels failed to capture my imagination. Part of the problem was feeling that I could progress simply by spamming the wizard's abilities. But, I powered through those levels, and I enjoyed the game more as I progressed.

There is an element of "make your own fun" present throughout the game. I recall a few parts of the world that rely on specific character abilities, but most of the game can be solved by any character. This is probably necessary design, in case one or two of your characters are dead when you reach a given part of a level. But, it also means that if you want to rely on the same techniques with the same character over and over again, you'll probably get by. On the other hand, if you take the time to experiment with the different abilities at your disposal, you'll probably have more fun with the game. At any rate, my enjoyment went way up after I forced myself to switch away from the wizard more often.

In summary, Trine is a fun, beautiful 2D platformer that is definitely worth playing, but to get the most out of it, instead of trying to get through the levels in the most direct, easiest way possible, allow yourself to get creative and experiment with all that it has to offer!

Evoland's gimmick is a progression through different graphical and gameplay styles using the usual fantasy adventure and RPG tropes. As you progress through the game, you discover different graphical upgrades (from black and white to color, from 2D to 3D, etc.) and gameplay systems (now you have save points!). Different areas of the game feature different combat mechanics, from sword-swinging action to turn-based RPG battles to point-and-click ARPG encounters.

Evoland is both a parody and homage at the same time, primarily riffing on the Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Diablo (but there are nods to others). It's appreciation for the source material is obvious, but it's not afraid to poke fun at the tropes, either. Some of the humor didn't hit squarely for me, and produced more eye rolls than laughs, but it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the game.

The gameplay is neither long nor deep, but if you have an affinity for the source material it draws from, Evoland is an enjoyable way to spend a weekend.

I'm a complete sucker for Astro Port's stuff, but I'm particularly happy with Wolflame. I loved Satazius, their horizontally-scrolling homage to shoot-em-ups like Gradius, and Wolflame is the same level of homage to vertically-scrolling titles like Raiden.

Your ship can acquire two satellites, each of which shoots one of three different weapons and can be upgraded five times. When a power-up appears, it changes color as it moves around the screen, allowing you to switch each satellite's weapon type on the fly by grabbing it when it is the desired color. Having a fully upgraded set of satellites makes you feel powerful, but not invulnerable, especially at higher difficulty levels. My favorite aspect of the upgrade system is being able to recover your previous abilities after you die, if you are lucky enough to spawn the proper power-up icon and collect it with your new ship.

The graphics nail the intended retro aesthetic, and cover the usual variety of environments (land, sea, outer space). The game ran smoothly at 60 FPS on everything I tried, including a laptop with Intel 5000 integrated graphics. There are basic configuration options for resolution, controls, and difficulty. If you're looking for something to scratch a retro arcade shooter itch, give this a try!

It's impossible for me to review this impartially. The first Double Dragon arcade machine was a big part of my childhood; I fed it tons of quarters at the local bowling alley. It's been a long time since I've played that arcade machine, so I can't speak to how perfect the port is, but everything felt right to me, and it gave me the nostalgia rush that I was hoping it would. Classic 80s-era punching and kicking (and whipping and batting and knife-throwing) at its finest.

I never played the second or third arcade games, so they were new to me here. DD2 is more Double Dragon, and I really enjoyed it. I don't have much to say about it, except that it's great.

The third one... well... um... huh. They sure went in a different direction for that one, didn't they? Different graphical style, jerky movement, different health bar and upgrade mechanics, different enemies. I'm all for trying to keep a franchise fresh, but I'm not a fan of this one. It did not feel right to me at all.

But even considering just the first two games, if you like Double Dragon and/or want to revisit your childhood, this collection runs fine, and the price is right. I'm a happy customer!

Strong Fish! Beautiful Fish!

Death Ray Manta is a solid twin-stick shooter for a very reasonable price. The shooting feels good, and while the early levels seem a little simplistic, the pace gets frenetic soon enough. Maximizing your score requires not only twitch reflexes but also a reliable memory, because the bonus gems in each level are in the same location every run, and grabbing them before they disappear doubles your score for the level.

I wish the game wasn't quite so garish; if you ever thought Geometry Wars' color and special effect sensibilities were too tame and conservative, DRM might be more your style. But that's just a personal preference, and beyond that, I have no complaints at all. It's fun, it's cheap, and it nails that just-one-more-game feeling that makes it tough to put down. Fishageddon!

Xeodrifter is a neat little Metroid-like. The abilities are unique and used to good effect with some inventive environment-traversal tricks. I liked the setup of moving between four different planets instead of having four different areas interconnected on the same planet. The weapon-upgrading system is excellent; being able to experiment with different weapon types by redistributing your upgrade points at any time is a great touch.

The game has its weak points, but they're more on the order of minor gripes than major flaws. At first I didn't like the way my character jumped (always reaching maximum height instead of varying depending on how hard I pressed), but I got used to it. You fight the same boss character repeatedly, which may be a little tedious, but the fight changes over time, and its recurrence plays a role in the (admittedly thin) story. I really wish I could have cycled through weapons without going to the pause screen; the left and right triggers on my controller were just begging to be used. I also wish I could have used the thumbstick for movement, because the absolute worst part of this game was my 360 controller's d-pad.

Xeodrifter doesn't overstay its welcome; my six-hour playtime is quite a bit longer than necessary because I spent some time jumping against every wall I could, trying to find a couple of secret passages that were eluding me. But despite it being a little on the short side, it felt like the right length to me, and made for a nice bite-sized weekend diversion. I have a big soft spot for Metroidvanias in general, so I'm predisposed to giving a thumbs-up here, but I found a lot to like.

This mouse-only game has a great soundtrack and some genuinely funny moments. I liked the game's narrative style and delivery, but if you're not into the music or humor, there may not be enough here for you to enjoy. There's not a lot of depth to the gameplay; you're mostly clicking on objects in the environment to solve puzzles, and occasionally sword fighting via a simple timing and pattern recognition mechanic.

For me, I'm not sure the game lived up to the hype that seems to surround it, but if you're a fan of adventure games, good soundtracks, and some occasional absurd dialogue, it's worth checking out. Despite the reservations I just voiced, I enjoyed playing it and I'm glad I saw it through to the finish.
