Caveat - the performance is not going to be smooth. Symptom of UE5 it seems like.

But this is classic Oblivion at its finest, jank included. Right in the nostalgia feels when I first played it earlier this year.

Look - it's awesome. Truly epic scale that's perfect for the setting. I've also gotten a lot of mileage on the MP side so far.

The biggest gripe is I want more. More multiplayer maps (both co-op and pvp), more classes, and more modes. I've got confidence this is coming down the line with the dev road map and the game will only get better with time.

RIP to a fantastic franchise.

It's clear poor decision making at the top led towards a game which lost my confidence. Slow updates to fix outstanding issues which weren't present in its previous games, eye-popping price increases to lukewarm DLC, and a laughable disrespect when communicating with the community has killed all goodwill I had towards Total War as a franchise.

I hope that CA can turn the ship around and win me back. But I don't see that happening if they double down on this path.

Darktide's pretty good now, and something I can recommend.

FS has been making steady progress improving the game since its launch last year. There's some ways to go in terms of mission and map variety, but we've finally got some meat on the bones that were present before.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the game progresses from here, as the evolution has been a great leap from where the game started.

I'm walking away very satisfied with the time I spent with Wasteland 3. I can see the flaws which have impacted some players (weird engine bugs and some issues with the combat that I'll mention), but truth be told there aren't many games like this. What made Wasteland 3 special were how the storytelling and core conflict challenged personal morality in grounded situations which ask: what would you do?

The setting and factions of the game were very unique among post-apocalyptic media, and deserve a shout out. New Vegas may have popularized the term "nuclear winter," but Wasteland 3's Colorado really accentuates what that would be like to live under. Post-apocalyptic settlements built on top of pre-war structures partially buried under a perpetual snowstorm felt like my team were unearthing the ruins of an era forever lost. Colorado's overworld map was also gorgeous, and I doubt travelling between instances would have been as interesting had I not been driving around in the squad's Kodiak tank beforehand. (That tank has a variety of horns to blare while driving around btw, with my favorite being a random callback to an '80s TV show Knight Rider .)

Speaking of New Vegas, the factions of Colorado were as varied and fully realized as those present in Fallout's Mojave. The sadistic God-Fishers whose natural spirituality was grotesquely tied towards human sacrifice and the Reagan-worshipping Gippers were just a few unique cults who rose out of the ashes of Wasteland's apocalypse. I can't overstate just how interesting it was to explore the faction conflicts. I really loved that part of this experience.

But Wasteland 3 wasn't perfect, even a few years after its release. I can only hope that inXile drops Unity for their next title, as the engine really struggled to meet the team's vision in my opinion. Graphical effects and the loading breaks between rather small instanced locations are areas I thought really showed the limits of using Unity as an engine. I'll preface with the usual "I'm no game designer" caveat, but the cinematic flourishes that the team used were so sparse that I can only assume they were the most difficult to work in. Think first-person Fallout-esque dialogue sequences and cinematic combat encounters, which were great inclusions I wish Wasteland 3 had more of.

I also had to reload some combat encounters when enemy turns would stall, which was a bug I'd encountered in other Unity cRPG's like Wasteland 2, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. These combined problems were annoying, but not deal-breakers for my experience. Unity simply can't handle the talent and vision inXile has moved to, it's as simple as that.

Overall, Wasteland 3 was a huge step up from Wasteland 2 in just about every way. Some complexity was sacrificed to streamline the experience from the previous title, and I missed having a combat log in the corner while playing this game. But I was hooked to Wasteland 3 from the get-go and couldn't wait to see how things played out. I couldn't say the same for Wasteland 2, which didn't have nearly the level of writing this game had. I strongly recommend at least the base game for Wasteland 3: it gave me an experience I hadn't had since playing New Vegas for the first time.

A free game that does a lot better than the product it's based off of. Enderal has some stellar writing and interesting quests, along with fun character progression that differs itself enough from Skyrim's baseline to feel rewarding. While some of its plot elements are borrowed from other media, it doesn't detract from the experience provided. The ending really hits hard, and it made me intrigued about what a continuation of this world would look like.

Try it out if you're in the mood for something that's a new Skyrim-esque experience. For a fan-made project, this project is incredible.
