ok. I bought this on a half whim. I'm only 6.5 hours in, in the starting town just after the game world opens up. I am playing blind, I know almost nothing about the game, didn't watch much before buying, and refuse to look anything up.

i was overwhelmed by the quest dump in the first town, but each quest is a delight.

coming in blind, i don't know what to expect. so every new mechanic reminds me of some half-broken Sky**m mod, but actually functional and part of the game. my mouth hung open at least two times from some cool side quest idea, personality, or game mechanic that came out of left field.

the intro dungeon shows a lot of what the game is about, complete with secrets of its own, exploration, and areas that double back like dark souls so you never really get lost if you keep going forwards.

turning off the compass leaves a near fully immersive experience. dialog choices and reputation matter, spam clicking through dialog options is a bad idea. quests have a weird mix between Morrowind and Sky**m, where some are "idk read and go figure out what you need to do" and most others are "follow the glowing mark on the minimap". the ones that they customized to be "go figure it out" style were handcrafted and not an overarching goal of the game (like Morrowind), so they have been reasonable so far.

lots of quality of life improvements like the looting without a menu. still some rough edges, but for a game of this scope and scale? it's best-of-class (what TES: VI should have been in 2027(?) whenever it finally releases).

the game reminds me of the first time playing Morrowind, Oblivion, and Sky**m. take it slow, stay blind, and enjoy at your own pace.

a gem like this is rare.

I basically got my $1 an hour out of it and enjoyed it. The early progression feels rewarding, the classes each have a unique playstyle and have sub-playstyles of their own to adapt to the game you're in. You can try multiple approaches and routes and find what works for you.

At this point after 70 hours, I have a good idea of the different routes and and such. I'm hitting a wall where the guns I want to use require attachments that might take 5-10 hours of using a sub-par version of the gun until I can try the combo I've been looking at. I can't pre-test if I'll like the gun I'm working towards so more of a gamble than an incremental improvement. I like self-building the process of finding what works for me, so just looking up a list of the best setups ruins the fun for me.

But, this is after 70 hours of fun gameplay, so it's worth it overall to me.

$1 per hour is a fair trade for entertainment

PoE2 forces you to interact with its mechanics (and gives you the recursive tooltips to do so). If you enjoy deep systems and problem solving, PoE2 is a 10/10 in its current state. More approachable than Elden Ring.

Underwhelming and predictable. There are better stories out there, so would reco checking out others instead of this.

Under the 2 hour mark and won't refund only because I played through to the end of at least 1 play through. Wasn't worth the cost.

Lot of repeated scenes, while I understood the premise and style, this kind of narrative setup only works once and other games have done it before.

Overall, it's a fun game with plenty of build variety where you can go in without a guide and try to make something yourself and probably be successful.

The problem for me, ONLY FOR YOUR FIRST RUN, is the difficulty spikes. Most of the time, you'll probably be killing things faster than you can move to get to more things to kill (elites and bosses included). But every once in a while, you'll get into a situation where things are suddenly able kill you easily or, despite your ability to one-tap elites 2 maps ago, you are now struggling to even kill the next boss (yes I know my resistances are low, but since I'm so focused on DPS, I would expect to at least kill it at a reasonable rate if I am successfully dodging all of the attacks).

Sometimes you can craft your way out of it, other times you won't have enough gear and you'll have to widen your loot filter to find something you can turn into what you need to get past the next wall.

So if you're playing casually, this is your fair warning to keep an eye out for those walls and recognize when you hit one. Backtrack, fix your build, and try again. It's easy to ignore defenses when you're one-hitting everything.

Each map can be played in different ways, adding to the layers of options you have to choose from.

Refunded. This port makes the game modern compared to the original, but there is no pause during cutscenes and battles. The reviews imply that this is a story heavy game, so with my frequent interruptions I didn't want to take the risk of missing one of the key moments.

Older school feeling with a wide variety of build choices. Go into the game as blind as possible, build and discover as you go for the best experience. Devs are continuing to push major updates for the game with a new DLC in the works.

Pause at any time, quit whenever (features automagic autosaving), teleport back to town whenever you want, semi-randomly generated map (layout is the same, but some paths may be blocked or some dungeons have different locations). All adds up to an easy drop-in, drop-out experience.

If you like reading, the story and lore are grim dark and grounded.

For the modders, the same tools the devs used are available to us to mod with. Double bonus that the extracted dbr files are just CSV files, making scripting bulk edits trivial.

A true labor of love by a team that can afford to work on their passion instead of for investors.
