[Review Initially written on 12/12, after the Day 1 Patch]

This is a phenomenal title that I feel will build up into something wonderful in 2026 - but it is definitely an Early Access game. If you're looking for a full experience, don't buy until there are more stable patches.

The two hours I have played have been an absolute treat - movement is this game's specialty, and mastering it is the goal. It is incredibly fun to feel yourself chain moves together as you come to grips with the buttons and what everything does. Yes, it took me a minute to figure out how to wall run - and perhaps something should inform you of how to do this crucial mechanic - but I found the discovery of the controls really refreshing. Were we not praising Dark Souls all those years ago for doing the same thing? The constant refinement of the tight moveset throughout the first hour was nothing but magical.

And there lies the strength of the game - exploring and rubbing against whatever you can to find secrets and paths to new areas. It is a constant delight to ask 'can I climb this?' and have the answer nearly always be yes. It's a shame that this comes at the cost of combat being a little more shallow than I expected - as far as I've played thus far, there is no extra verbs for attacking, just the standard combo or pogo move. Unless it's a boss fight that's using its arena to guide you to its weak points, it feels best to ignore enemies most of the time. Now that there is a little bit of healing, it feels more worth it to fight small enemies, but without some kind of mid-level heal it still feels like a losing proposition.

It must be noted as well, the new patch seems to have corrupted my (and upon further reading, many others) save - I ended up in a zone I never unlocked, and when I tried to fast-travel, my game crashed. Reloading caused me to lose all my levels and items collected. There's some collision issues I ran into with some of the houses in the main area, glitching through pieces of geometry by accident - nothing more major than that (and the save glitching out).

Overall, Eternity Egg is a very good execution of a movement-based souls adventure that leaves you to get lost in its wonderful, trip-hop world - but it is still an Early Access game with technical issues, bugs, and a ways to go. Buy if you want to support the developer and don't mind some rougher edges as this project gets fine-tuned.
