I don't write reviews a lot, but this game is very good.

Do you like to do the fast? This is a game about doing the fast.

Sometimes I would be doing slow, but then I realized I should not that because do fast is better. Definitely my bad on that.

Steam's review system suggested that I review this game, just because I've played it some. And it says I have to either recommend it or not recommend it... so like, I chose no.

This is a problem with Steam's review system, and I'm gonna take a moment to harp on that. It's stupid. I often want to just write a review without rating a game, but I literally can't.

Anyways, I don't really care about this game, so, I'm going to give a thumbs down, because I also didn't really enjoy it overall. Its monetization is pay-to-progress, and I don't appreciate that. A couple of things are pretty unintuitive, and plenty of things are confusing. Part of that might be that it throws too much information at you to start out, but I think it goes a bit beyond that. Maybe some of it is that they added a lot of content as the game grew? Who knows.

But I mean, take that all with a grain of salt, y'know-- I'm just writing this cuz I'm bored and I'm kinda annoyed that steam keeps asking me to review ♥♥♥♥ I don't care about. That's not why I'm giving it a thumbs down, just saying... I dunno, maybe it's for you, maybe it's not. It's not for me. I could say some good things about it, but again, I don't give a crap.

I thought being an old game wouldn't be that much of a problem, especially since it's kind of presented how a remastered version would be ("All previously released DLC included" kinda has that vibe). It's a much bigger problem for me than I gave it credit for. The options menu is obnoxious, descriptions/etc. are unclear, certain mechanics are what I'd only describe as archaic. I do see a lot of things it did right, but that's almost just because they're glaringly obvious in contrast to all of the things it did wrong.

Just makes me feel like "That's so cool, I really wish it was in a game I'm interested in playing." So I've requested a refund. I don't generally buy games that I think I might refund, and as a result, this is the first game I've actually requested one for.

I'm going to point out my main frustrations, because it's important, if you're reading reviews, to know where that frustration lies.

1: Menus
- A: Controls are completely customizable for keyboard, but not for controller.
- B: You can't save all of the settings at once. If you try to go to a different part of the menu with unsaved changes, it says "Are you sure you want to leave this menu without saving your changes?" and when you do save your changes, it closes the options menu, and says its saving the game. I had to open the options menu 4-5 times in order to set all my options, and the game took a good 10 seconds to save in between each time.
- C: Death is not explained well, and it's not handled well. It's unclear what point you're going back to with any of the options, and every time you die, it gives you the option of changing to easy mode, which felt like the game was mocking me.
- D: Some of the options are lacking. For example, I should be able to have just my own health/stamina bar showing, but the options are "Everyone" "Just party" and "None" so I have to see my allies' bars.
2: Gameplay
- A: There aren't enough checkpoints, and when you die, you just flat go back to a prior save. This is a product of it being an old game, and I should have expected as much. It means you have to save all the time. So, if you go explore an area, and everything seems fine, but suddenly you run into some tough enemies, or accidentally fall off a cliff when you weren't expecting any trouble, you've just lost a bunch of progress. Fun.
- B: There are mild, forgivable problems with the tutorial systems. I won't go into detail here. Part of it is because it's an old game. Part of it is probably more a product of who playtested the game.
- C: There's a lot of repeated voice lines, right off the bat. For the ones from your allies, you can turn them off, but you can't just lower the frequency, which is disappointing (like, in the Dragon Age game I play, you have very *very* infrequent conversations between your party members). Most of them are also kind of weird, and make it feel very video-game-y like they're trying to straight-up tell you game mechanics. I can forgive the weirdness a bit because of who your allies are in the story ("not exactly real people") but it's still offputting.
- D: Some very unfair things feel like they happen. This would probably not be an issue if not for point [A] here...
-- If you run out of stamina, you're stunned for like 5 seconds. You do not recover upon being hurt.
-- The hit stagger is unfair both ways. I can keep one enemy stun-locked easily, and an enemy could keep me stun-locked easily if they were smart enough to. Sometimes they almost are, and that tends to be enough to get you killed. This is only really for fights with human-sized enemies, and maybe I'm making a bigger deal out of it than it is, since I've only played for a few hours.
-- One of the enemies I ran into has an attack that knocks you backwards (like 10 meters or so). You run into this enemy on the top of a high hill, with some cliffs nearby. I was struggling with the enemies here a bit already (died a few times), and then they knocked me off the cliff while I was at full health and I died instantly. That was what finally made me actually give up on the game. I probably would have just put it down for the day if it wasn't something so frustrating (on top of all the other things I was getting annoyed with).
- E: There's some issues with ease of control. Hard to explain this concisely. I had a big annoyance with the bow skill you start with, and a minor annoyance with sprinting. Some of the menus are also a little wonky, like I just kept feeling things like "I should be able to enter this submenu by pressing right on the stick" and it just doesn't work that way.
- F: It just doesn't really feel like I can do anything strategic, for the most part. I'm sure there's good strategies to employ, but that does't mean it *feels* like there's strategy.

That's about all I can think of for big annoyances, but I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff.

It does have some pretty cool things, but I wanted to air the things I disliked first, because I wasn't as careful as I should have been in buying this. Though I will say, there were some things that it was obviously trying to be "cool" with, which definitely didn't feel like they actually mattered to me, but that didn't take away from the experience (though, I think if I had played for longer, I would be upset about food going rotten, which seems like it was going to be a thing).

Climbing on big monsters is a bit awkward to control, but it more than makes up for that with just generally being fun. I haven't played Shadow of the Colossus, but I would imagine it's a similar "type" of fun. Which is not to say it's comparable in quality or anything, just shares a vibe, if that makes sense.

Navigating an area feels very fair. Examples of games that *don't* achieve this level of fair feeling in this specific way:
- Skyrim: I just want to get from point A to point B. I'll jump at a mountain trying to skip over a slight roundabout, and be irked when my character slips down the part of a slope that's 2 degrees steeper than what I was just walking on. It will end up taking me the same amount of time as if I had gone around.
- Assassin's Creed: I want to get somewhere that's vertically higher than me. I'll just walk straight at it, because my character can climb almost anything. The people around me say "What the heck are you doing?" because people would never actually do that.
- Dark Souls: I fall down 3 feet off an edge. I can no longer get back.

I didn't really get used to the combat controls, but besides not being able to rebind things properly on controller, and some things I mentioned, I'm sure that the controls would feel pretty good if I did get used to them. I don't think it would have taken *too* much longer for that.

The opening scene (after the intro where you learn the basic mechanics) is pretty cool. Most of the time (very unimportant spoiler imo; and I'm being a little vague:) when you have a "scripted loss" it feels really cliche and/or bullcrap, but I think the way they set up the scenario, and the result, is very satisfying.

Most of the things I didn't say anything about, like the overall storytelling, or the animation (considering it's an older game, at least) feel "average" or "a little good but not worth mentioning." I see that as generally just positive. If unimportant parts of a game are great, it distracts from what you're trying to do with the game, and it just makes any issues with the main parts stick out even more.

I've decided just now that I should probably edit this review to add a bit here, because it honestly deserves a neutral review from me, not a negative (or positive) one. But steam doesn't allow that, and I took too long to get to the parts that I liked... I know that steam doesn't show entire reviews unless you click on something. So I just wanted to have something less disparaging at the top. The rest is unedited.

I have some big issues with the way the game is scored, which I could see being fixed in the future. As someone who likes to optimize in puzzle games like this, it's frustrating and I don't want to play the game in its current state.

- Restarting a level doesn't reset your move count. Hitting Continue from the main menu also doesn't reset your move count (in this case maybe it's OK because it might put you back to the middle of the puzzle if that's where you left off; I dunno). It ends up being that you have to start the entire game over in order to get a fresh move count, no matter what.
- The leaderboard is only for sets of 5 puzzles. This isn't a problem, but it's relevant to the next point here.
- Starting from a level you've unlocked doesn't advance you to the next level upon completion, so if you try to set a good score on the latest puzzle you've done, you can't go through the set of 5 to submit them to the leaderboard. You also can't unlock the next level if it's not unlocked. You HAVE to hit continue to do that.
- It would be nice if your high scores on levels would save individually, even if they do submit 5 at a time.

If there weren't high scores at all, I wouldn't write this review, and I'd just enjoy the game in general-- I can't speak very well for the overall quality of the puzzles, because I only did a few, but they seemed like they were going in a good direction, so I imagine they're very nice. And no, I can't ignore the scores; that's like asking me to ignore someone who keeps tapping on my shoulder to say I'm doing a bad job.

I could pick nits all day with other things, but they really aren't notable. I can easily ignore any other problems, and would just be able to enjoy the game, if not for the frustration with the scoring. If you want a AAA+ puzzle game experience, sure, it's not, but it's also listed at 1/12 of the price.

I got this game because I saw it was free. I wouldn't pay for it as-is, simply because of the scoring thing, but I can see it turning into something that's worth the price listed. In fact, if you're usually the kind of person to play this kind of game, and ignore the fact that it scores you, it's probably worth the price already.

I can't speak to the quality of the puzzles as the game goes on, but they seemed like they were going in a good direction to start. The game mechanics are interesting, and trying to minimize the number of moves you make just adds a new level on top of that.
