I really do enjoy this game, but i can't in my right mind recommend it to others.
The concept is simple and fun, Kill stuff, get money, spend money, kill stuff harder, kill big stuff, get gem, discover secret.
The issue lies in the details, past the brutal clips and great looking screenshots. This game is rife with more bugs than a cave in Deep rock galactic. I've had enemies clip into the ground, enemies that pathfind into walls, enemies fail to attack me as i stare them in the eyes and point a sword at their throat, my sword has disappeared out of my hand, it's gotten stuck in the wall, it's clipped beneath the ground. I've had enemies literally not be able to pathfind up stairs sometimes. They behave like GMod NPCs. They don't react when you take a hostage, they don't react when you stab their friends, they don't attempt to take cover from arrows or magic and they never, ever attempt to run away. most of them fight like it's the first time they've swung a weapon.
The maps are bland too. You spend most of the game looping in the same couple dungeons with minor variation between runs. To be fair, This has been improving drastically.
The boss fight is pathetic, it's the exact same fight, six times in a row, and it's much more a test of your ability to deal with the climbing mechanic and deal with motion sickness in rodeo attacks rather than any real combat ability. Oh and the shop can fail to stock full sets of given armour and it doesn't scale in size or selection with level, which makes it very hard to make a consistently geared character.
Everything is repetitive and unpolished, and the updates don't at all address the latter.
Sure, I love the killing, but i feel there's just so much more that could be done here. I'm not going to claim to understand the VR dev process, but i just don't understand how this is a finished product.



____HUGE SPOILERS BELOW____

The game's story is also extremely poorly explained unless you hunt down and read the smattering of documents left around dungeons, not exactly something i wanted to do when i was looking for blood to shed. After beating the boss 5 or 6 times, you unlock a gate that leads to an area where a sword pedestal is placed. Expecting some sort of serious fight or puzzle gauntlet before me, i pick up the sword.
And then i'm killed by three crystal dongs.
I was.. Baffled, to say the least. You just... Die at the end of the game, No test of skill, no forced reflection, no knowing what's to come. You just... Die.
You find yourself in space, where a single sentence explains that you sacrificed yourself to sustain the planet for 10000 years longer, then credits roll while an advertisement-like video plays detailing progress through updates.
This was the single most unsatisfying ending i have ever seen. Ever. Couldn't have anyone sacrificed themselves? Why did i need to get so strong? to kill so many? for what purpose? For all my life, i had been little more than a raider, killing bandits and the law alike in the most psychotic ways i can possibly imagine, and yet i sacrifice myself to save the world? Is there something i missed? Every document i did bother to read was either useless information or seemingly very esoteric.
I don't understand this decision for the ending and i dearly hope either more focus is put on the story to make it feel more suitable, or that it's reworked entirely. It was experience ruining.


Ultimately, i really hope warpfrog puts their full weight into polishing the game and fleshing out the lore, as i really think the concept of the game is fun, and when things work, the gameplay is a blast.
but it's so rough, i just cant tell anyone else to pick it up, and i can't sing it's praises without telling the full truth.

one of the most metal games i've played in a while. Leans a lot into strategic skill rather than luck, which makes it far more satisfying to me than games like Balatro. The great music and artstyle just add to the crunchy gameplay. Runs flawlessly on linux and the steam deck as well. Like all rougelikes, it can get somewhat repetitive, but for me, that runs in the genre.
Just remember to keep your eyes on the damn archers....

This game is NOT for beginners! I've 1CCd the extra bosses of len'en 1-3 as well as touhou 17, and Easy gives me a very hard time here.
With that in mind though, This is a great work. Patterns are well thought out and great looking, music is faithful to the pc98 without being tiring, Controls are good, and character writing doesn't feel too jarring coming from jynx's games.
However, On easy, Many projectiles seem to not affect the playable character at all, and yabasume is incapable of dealing damage. I am under the assumption these are either intentional or bugs, because neither of these issues ruins the experience. I would much prefer too see custom easy mode spell cards rather than simply disabling the hits on some projectiles if that is how the difficulty scaling currently works.
Dspite the oddities, this is absolutely worth playing if you care about len'en, the few dosens of us there are..

This is probably my most enjoyed VR game, the combat is kinetic and satisfying, it's easy to run, the gameplay loop is simple and fun, and it doesn't have any corporate ick or concerning drm or anything.
But having played it so much, i feel like it's fair to say i still have some issues.
- weapon collision sometimes feels slightly inconsistent, could be my tracking, but i've absolutley had some moments where i've died and felt i was not supposed to
- Indications of enemies approaching from behind are FAR too weak. Bats and wisps can approach entirely undetected from behind and hit you without giving you a chance to respond. Sometimes you can get sound ques, but that doesn't work well if you don't like your volume very high or are hard of hearing. some sort of visual indication would be very welcome, perhaps as an acessability setting
- Dart traps feel very.. Inconsistent to dodge. sometimes i can evade them fine, sometimes i feel like it's not possible.
- collecting journal pages is a slog and feels minimally rewarding, beast blood accumulation also feels very slow at times and i have come to the conclusion that it is easiest to always do at least one NG+ after beating the beast, as otherwise the rewards are essentally worthless.

I really do want to give this game a positive review, and i will should my issues be fixed.
This game is great, it has a fun artstyle, colorful characters, and a good premise. But it's absolutely laden with softlocks and bugs for me.
examples include
- Kei's deep fried roach cricket isn't consumed when eaten , rendering it a softlock as the game only lets you progress when you eat the cricket.
- Shrimp are uncatchable, i tried for 30 minutes.
- Various times when 100 years frog friend refused to eat daruma, requiring a restart to fix.
- items, such as the bow and fishing rod, becoming impossible to put away or use, requiring a restart to fix.
- times where loading a checkpoint wouldn't reset the music being played, such that the forest soundtrack would be played while fishing at the shore, or the farm theme playing at the shrine.
- Many more...
I would be glad to speak with the team/developer and try to work these things out if it is possible, I have tried verifying integrity of files several times to no avail, and no other games show this level of instability on my system.
