Somehow, I've always felt like Destiny 2 was only ever "good enough". To give some background info, I'm a player who's been playing since Opulence. And although I can't say that I've been in the community long enough to claim that I know all there is to know about the game, I can say that I've noticed several patterns in Bungie's upkeep on the game. Yes, Activision's grip on Bungie is gone. Yet somehow, their independence only shows that the inherent flaws of the game were caused by the latter.

Starting with the game's yearly expansion packs, we've been given an abundance of content. The new stories introduced with each successive installment have only improved since the game's inception. Unfortunately, Bungie's storywriters have consistently clung to its philosophy of tell, but not show. As much as i appreciate the depth of the game's lore, I still believe the game could do with an approach of integrating its compelling stories through gameplay — not through seasonal lore cards. It's a shame, as the experience of actually playing the game is phenomenal.

For its flaws, Bungie has given its players a myriad of ways to enjoy the game. Whether it be PvE or PVP, there's always something for everyone. That said, the main attraction of the game is undoubtedly the raid gamemode. Each one's unique mechanics paired with an emphasis of teamwork does well to build up anticipation for rewards, should players complete them.

However, where raids excel, the game's PVP gamemodes fall short. Because of the way Destiny is fundamentally structured, it is impossible to have balance in all modes. Crucible's competitive potential is squandered with the meta builds of stasis and whatever god weapon is trending; and gambit's idea for a gamemode unique to Destiny is fundamentally flawed.

Lastly, the seasonal content released every three months has to be addressed. At best, they've given players a plethora of lore, armaments, as well as a unique seasonal arena to stay invested in. However, at their worst, they've been downplayed into filler content with just enough recycled weapons and derivative plotlines to satisfy internal deadlines. Personally, I don't think a formulaic approach to the game's seasonal content would necessarily be bad. What matters for each season ties back to the lore: Each seasonal content has to have meaningful, first-hand experiences of the game's rich lore.

All in all, Destiny 2 is a game that could be so much more. Its active and devoted playerbase has definitely attributed to its health over the years, but they will only stay dedicated for so long. Efforts in creating compelling content for each season can definitely do wonders for the game's overall quality.
