This is an example of a game where I wish I could give a "mixed" review.

The premise is awesome, love the objective and overal idea. I like that its peaceful, just exploring and building etc, and i enjoy the visual style.

What I am finding is somewhat of a letdown is the moment to moment gameplay due to some questionable design choices and a little bit of jank. some key things

1) Resource Gathering: Early-game you are manually collecting resources as is typical for survival games and thats fine, but what I find really sucks is how you are doing this. The majority of your early ressources are just scattered across the surface in small single-unit nodes, thats ice, iron, titanium, magnesium, silicon, and cobalt. you cant got 5 feet without hitting a resource node of some kind and it just all feels random. There is no logic to their placement so there is no way to be smart about gathering. You just run around randomly until you see what you need or run out of O2. This game would be massively improved by picking at most 1 resource to just spray everywhere and then take the rest and come up with some distribution rules that can be learned, and when you find 1 of a resource you find a bunch. As is it makes the earlygame just kinda suck

2) Power Management: You start with wind turbines, progress to solar and so on, with most things consuming some amount of power, pretty standard survival systems and thats fine. However this one is really kinda half-baked. For example, solar always produces the same amount of power whether its day or night, there is no way to turn off a item when low on power you have to deconstruct it. Also as far as I can tell no proximity or placement requirements that make you think about how you build (for example you can cram wind turbines together incredibly densely and it doesnt impact output and so on.)

3) Blueprint unlocks: this is less of an issue, and i love the general idea of the progression, different metrics of terraforming progress different streams of items, however there are some weird choices. For example we get the vegetube to make oxygen right away, however for something called a vegetube its a bit weird that it cant provide food, and then the food grower isnt until a oxygen threshold is met, yet they feel like they are functionally the same item, sone other oddities like this where the progressin sequence doesnt make a tonne of sense

Summary:
Love the idea, dont mind the graphics, but so far really let down by the actual gameplay, im still under my 2 hours so I cant speak to the late-game, as of writing im trying to decide whether to force through to give it a full try or to refund before going over the 2 hrs

First impressions were really good, but after 2-3 hours it just became predictable and easy. No real puzzle not much for changing rules like in other games inspired by Papers Please (yeah you get the daily task but only one and they are generally trivial).

then the reactions/events are super basic and easy, oh aggressive with indeterminate symptoms, im going to send you to quarantine then youll attack me, ill shoot you and get money for killing an infected. Every time

Finally the wave defense mode and base management are so easy/simple they serve no real purpose

the hardest part of the game is shooting the rats because the bullet from your gun is slow and the rats run when you pull the trigger, dodging the bullet unless up close

so all to say some fun ideas and a cool concept that quickly devolves into procedural grindy gameplay requiring no real effort

Id say buy on a deep sale for a few hours of fun maybe, or wait for some updates

Devs have publically posted in support of the russian invasion of ukraine, additionaly it was revealed that they are atleast somewhat involved in making drone sims for russian operators.

Cant recommend a game that directly funds the russian military or those that support it

This is a game where id love a "mixed" button instead of a thumbs up or down

The pieces are all here for a fantastic battlefield experience, but they dont quite come together due to a variety of issues, some relating simply to how you find matches

so the positives:
1) the gunplay feels like battlefield most of the time, there is however something weird going on with bullet spread on ARs etc, feels way less accurate at medium range than it should be
2) the game itself looks great
3) we have classes back and it isn't a hero shooter
4) there's more but really i want to talk about the few issues that really keep me from ultimately recommending this game

so the negatives...

1) the main menu and server browser, going to divide this because this whole thing is garbage
1.1) The UI in general seems designed for a controller with mouse movement and clicking sometimes landing you not where you want to be, all in all just simple menu navigation throughout the game is horribly designed
1.2) the presentation, this is the biggest issue, they try to group "experiences" and crap but it shuffles all the time with whats being showcased, finding what you want is a nightmare if you want to play anything other than the generic standard stuff. The manual server browser is missing a tonne of basic filter/search options and needs work as well
1.3) apparent attempt to hide closed weapon modes continues?

2) matchmaking: Ok you give up trying to find what you want and pick one of the standard modes, lets say rush, well your'e dropped into a match in progress as attacker, you finish that then are bounced back to matchmaking and are dropped into another partway done match as attacker on another map, repeat ad-nauseum. What happened to joining a server and playing as both sides on 1 map with the same group of players before moving to the next for these asym modes? It completely ruins the experience as it is now, obviously less aggregious for modes liek conquest.

3) Jump Spam: better than beta, still an issue, amount of times ive been popped by a bunny-hopping sniper is too many

4) Map Design: Most maps are terrible, either entirely or for all but the mode they were liekly designed for, this is especially apparent in conquest and escalation.

The majority of the maps are just warrens, with no real smart positions, and enemies coming from all angles all the time. makes the entire match just feel like all they deisgned for was Chaos, no thought to smart play at all, with everything relying on twitch shooter skills.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but i remember for a long time the 2 things that set BF apart from COD and other shooters and gave it its own identity were (1) the ability for smarter play and squad play to be more important than twitch reflexes, and (2) the scale. With most maps being smaller and designed how they are most of the time both of those things are gone and it's just CoD with walls that break.

We only have a few maps that are even somewhat large, and that desperately needs to be addressed

Silver Lining:

As I said above, its not all bad, some maps are ok, Mirak is a solid conquest map for example, and especially playing hardcore conquest rules (unfortunately not an official mode but a portal mode that suffers from the above-mentioned challenge in finding via their UI) can be a TONNE of fun, definitely get some of the classic Battlefield feel there

If we get a few more big maps that are actually well designed, or even smaller ones that aren't designed to just be chaotic, and if we get some fixes/updates to the UI and server browser this game will be in a good spot and I will happily recommend it.

Conclusion:
I said at the start I wish there was a neutral or mixed option, given that there isn't I think I have to come down on not recommending it in its current state. Will be happy to revise should the main issues be addressed. The potential for greatness is here for sure though.

update:
- Now seeing blatant AI slop being sold for premium currency
- UI/Server Browser etc is STILL garbage months later

This game has no soul, battlefield may be dead

Just finished the game after 24ish hours with 100% completion

Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable game worth the money, but it definitely had a few screw-ups and I think overall from a pure gameplay perspective maybe didnt reach the level of 2016 or eternal

What I liked:
1) overall feel of the slayer: felt like a proper wrecking-ball which I think better suits the idea of the slayer over ethernal's parkour master
2) The aesthetic: the science-fantasy dark ages look to everything was great, the demons, your allies and you all look awesome
3) The guns: Of course the classics but the new ones were a bit nuts in a good way, was interesting in that most guns felt kinda lame initially (ineffective) but once you figured out how to use them and got some upgrades on them it just clicks and suddenly they are incredible. The grenade launcher is maybe the only exception in that it just never measured up to the rest of the arsenal, also come on wheres the companion for the chain shot??
4) The Music: i mean of course the music, its another great metal score, and a few tracks especially really hit well
5) the story: weird for a doom game really but i liked the more overt lore focus with more voiced characters and cutscenes etc

What was neutral or meh to me:

1) the parry mechanic: they went for a kinda bullet-hell thing and it works but also just overall feels weird, when projectiles dont really look any different except they are green so you can parry them. It works form a mechanical perspective but it just didnt fit the game in my opinion. Id be fine with a parry mechanic but maybe make it only unique attacks instead of just the same projectile but green?
2) Atlan sequences: they look cool, I think the atlan bits were done well in that they were short enough to not overstay their welcome, so they were fine i guess but nothing special
3) A couple of the boss fights were pretty uninspired, serviceable but not memorable

What I didnt like:
1)Dragon segments: I almost put this in the neutral section, if they had been shorter I probably would have but the dragon combat especially was just simply put lame, it was so uninspired and generic, did they let the intern design that part or what? It does look cool though
2) The UI: Ok this is my biggest complaint, the menu UI is atrocious. Things like you cant select other chapters after finishing one without going back out to the main menu and re-entering your campaign, the masteries/challenges menu is also just horrendous and weird, what happened to just having them in the map view?? It all behaves like they really expect you to be using a controller so on M&K its just bad. The map atleast is fine, except for during dragon sequences then the verticality of the dragon exceeds what the map can do and its rough. I do not remember eternal having these issues with UI design and such so not sure what happened here

I could add more but thats the jist, overall its a great game with a small handful of weirdly obviously bad elements that it feels like maybe they were rushed and didnt have time to do it properly? Regardless the game is still a decent package and worth the money in my opinion

Still missing some content, probably needing a bit of balancing, but thats early access

its arguably already one of the best ARPGs out there, I'm enjoying it much more than D4 as is and its only going to get better

has potential but definitely under-baked

everyone has pointed out their server issues, which is somewhat embarrassing for a major cloud provider

but my main issue is the scenery while looking "better" is less accurate than it was in 2020, atleast in areas ive tested that i spent a lot of time in real life in, ive noticed the 3d photogrammetery is worse, and the building/road generation is FAR worse than 2020 was on release. I was hoping for parity at minimum but no, i cant recognise my own neighbourhood anymore.

Really wish I could refund it but the damn install/queues/loading ate 4 hours before i even got a chance to play

the CDLC has a lot of good assets and they aren't done yet with more to come, the map is well made, especially for use in armoured combat and one of the largest out there. I have some gripes but most are quite minor, overall a very fun addition to arma 3

Pros:
- Good map for some fun armoured combat
- Every building enterable and the map is huge
- Good assets for east/west Germany and Poland
- Force Recon is a lot of fun
- Responsive dev team on their discord, very willing to help/answer questions etc

Neutral:
- Map doesnt have a border crossing for those undercover missions, as I understand it there simply wasnt one there during the time depicted so this is realistic thus a neutral point
- Map has no airfields, you can place them to use roadways etc and adding one would be unrealistic as the area chosen did not have an airfield,

Cons/wishlist:
- I do wish we had a soviet and US or generalised NATO faction, would be neat to get some bradleys etc in the mix
- I would love to see 1 more tank on each side (not another variant of the Leo 1 or T-55)
- Lack of helicopters, red side has mi-2 only, which is fine but just one more option would be good to have
- No Jets, I get it, no airfields so why bother...but for making missions id love to have them as AI bombing the players or w/e
- Armoured combat is held back by abysmal Arma 3 vehicle AI, hard to setup real-ish tactics PvE missions when the AI breaks if you have more than 1 vehicle in a group haha, this isnt the fault of the CDLC devs, but it does hold back their product
- Night Vision could use a bit of tuning, I've used a lot of NVG options from the era being depicted and they weren't quite that grainy, etc

8 hours here and a few more on XB

its just underwhelming, some of that classic bethesda charm is there for sure, but its also just a pile of half-baked systems in a antiquated engine.

if you like loading screens then its the game for you, otherwise its really just enough to demonstrate what it could have been without ever actually getting there itself

pick it up on a deep sale maybe, but not worth full price as is
