One who serves.

Samurai were high-class warriors who swore loyalty to a Daimyo.

They would fight in exchange for food and housing, and if they were defeated in a fight they were expected to commit suicide because they weren’t good enough. But death didn’t hold the same connotation back then as it did now, it was more of a “try again in the next life bc you failed in this life” kind of thing.

Similarly, if you prevailed in a fight, it was custom to bring a trophy (usually the head) to present to your Daimyo and prove your victory in that fight, preserving your honor.

Samurai did not necessarily protect citizens, mostly they killed enemies and made citizens be dutiful under their Daimyo. If a citizen defied the Daimyo, no matter how noble the cause, a samurai was obliged to do his Daimyo’s bidding and execute the opposer.

All in all, Samurai were more loyal than they were noble. If their Daimyo was cruel, so were they, if their Daimyo was good, so were they; Samurai were merely extensions of the Daimyo. Samurai who relinquished their ties to their Daimyo would lose their pay and their status, becoming Ronin.
