If you are a fan of games such as Surviving Mars, Per Aspera is a game that will resonate. You are given the task of terraforming Mars, managing a variety of resources that are all vital towards the success of your mission. In an interesting twist of fate, you play as an AI that was created for this purpose. There is a story embedded in this game that makes the play more interesting as you progress, navigating the twists and turns of the plot while continuing to focus on your mission.

The gameplay is fairly smooth though there are some bugs and rough edges that I expect to see worked out. The devs did release a day 2 patch to address a number of items, so it seems to me that they are keenly interested in the success of this game.

From an artistic perspective, this game is pretty. It has a futuristic feel to it that reflects in the artwork. At first glance you might think the map is a 2D topographic map, but once you start to adjust your POV you discover very quickly that there is depth to it, and I honestly love the feel of that map. It makes you feel like an explorer. The HUD is very clean and simplistic, but I do think there are areas where it is oversimplified. (That's just me, and I am a data geek) The music is interesting, but sadly much of it repeats over and over so you start to lose some appreciation for it.

On the whole, considering the $30 price point (as of this writing), I think this is a game worth getting. I've put in 10 hours in 2 days so far, which is more than I can say for a lot of games. Should the devs continue to show interest in improving the game and polishing the rough edges, this will likely be a game that - like Surviving Mars - becomes one that is like an old friend in your game collection and you still come back to it sometimes even once you've beaten it.

It's a bit like Rimworld in terms of the gameplay elements (and Rimworld, in turn, is like Dwarf Fortress), so if you like trying to manage a group of "survivors" then this is up your alley. Unfortunately, I haven't seen very many creative ways to accidentally kill my survivors beyond the usual starving/suffocating... :)

For a game that came out almost six years ago now, Skyrim has aged remarkably well. I've just picked this back up and started fresh and remember why I enjoyed this game so much. (I had almost 180 hours on the original Skyrim)

One of the things that makes or breaks a game for me is good storytelling. Skyrim has managed to pull that off well, with stories that keep you engrossed and make you forget to check the (real world) time - before you know it, you've been playing for six hours working on quests and haven't even realized it. Anything that is that immersive is, to me, well worth it.

The "open world" concept behind the game is also quite enjoyable. You're not locked into a storyline from which there is no deviation - you can change quests at any time, pursue new ones, evne roam and explore the world. Without a linear progression the world feels more real.

Every decision has consequences and helps drive events forward and give you a reputation (be it good or bad) in the world. Want to be a sneak thief or a pickpocket? Go for it - but if you get caught, you'll find a bounty on your head, time in jail, and even a "kill on sight" order if the bounty gets high enough.

Lastly, graphics... while the graphics may not be the prettiest compared to today's AAA games, Skyrim's graphics do pretty well in my book for a game that's been around quite awhile. The Special Edition has definitely spruced things up in that department a bit, though again, I wouldn't say they're on par with today's games.

If you're buying this on a discount, it's definitely worth it. Full price? You might want to invest in the original and grab some HD mods to spruce it up.

Overall, though? If you get this game, chances are good you'll get sucked in!

(Received this for free as an owner of the original Skyrim at the time that the Special Edition came out)

For a game in the Alpha state it is remarkably stable. My experience, after 80+ hours, has been very light on the bugs and interesting on the gameplay. In fact, I'd almost say this was more a Beta than an Alpha - something that has a good foundation and is now building the house on it.

New features are appearing regularly - often once a week. These bring with them new blocks and new functionality. Each new feature adds another dimension to the game and makes it that much more interesting to play and build in.

I should sound a note of caution: This game is more suited for those who enjoyed playing with Legos when they were kids and wishing they could be astronauts. That's not to say that a more causal gamer would be bored with the game, but some imagination and creativity is absolutely vital to properly enjoying the game.
