XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a great strategy game, and also my favorite game of all time. It's like many other games: easy to learn, hard to master. There is so much nuance to this game that you won't see at first. As it starts to unfold, you realize just how clever it is.

There are two games in one here: The strategy game, and the tactical game. In the strategy game, you build your base, research new tech to use on missions, shoot down UFOs, and generally make all the big decisions. In the tactical game, you take a squad of up to 6 soldiers to a battle site. This is where you must use military style tactics against the alien aggressors. Knowing where to take cover, and how to flank the enemy, for example.

It will seem difficult and unfair at first, and quite frankly, it often is! This is a game where drama unfolds. Watching soldiers die is normal, and my soldier memorial wall can sometimes be quite large. It's not like a lot of modern games where you can expect a high success rate for merely showing up. Failure is mandatory, and it becomes acceptable once you understand that.

You also need to keep your tech flowing, as it makes a significant impact. Moving from ballistic guns to laser guns makes a shockingly massive difference, and so forth. Watching your tech jump in these leaps and bounds is very satisfying.

Now this paragraph is just for fans of the old XCOM (and I mean from the 90s). You should like it, so long as you appreciate it as its own game. It feels like the old XCOM, but certain things are very different. You have up to 5 inventory slots: armor, main gun, sidearm (or rocket launcher), and two miscellaneous. That's it. Most ammo is assumed to be endless, instead of being a carryable item. On the other hand, soldiers with rockets can only fire one rocket per mission, and that's it. (To be fair, rockets are REALLY useful). You don't load up your pants pockets like you did in the old days. Action points are gone. Now you simply do two things: Move and perform an action. An action like firing a gun, throwing a grenade, or moving a second time. I have heard complaints about this new direction, but for whatever I miss from the old game, I am quite happy to see action points phased out. I was a skeptic at first, too. You also don't get all sorts of firing options for your guns. Usually just "aim and shoot", unless you're using a special ability. I'm fine with this, as well. Again, it is its own game with its own vibe, but it does carry a lot of things that make you say "Yeah, that's XCOM alright."

I recommend this to game strategy fans, XCOM fans, even people who don't typically play strategy games. I'm one of them! For the record, I mostly play Enemy Within, as it is the same as Enemy Unknown, but with more content. Both are great!

Sid Meier has made many games with clever tactical depth, but is not so swollen with rules, so that anybody can jump right in. Pirates! continues the tradition by being a game chock full of strategy, but is highly accessible.

The game is a sandbox. You can go anywhere, and do anything, within the Spanish Main. Generally, you plunder ships or towns, and get promoted by friendly nations. There are plenty of other things to do, too.
Tasks you perform have an associated action oriented mini-game. You'll be ship-to-ship battling and swordfighting a lot. I like most of these games, though your mileage may vary. Many people have mixed feelings about them.

As far as management goes, the game cuts out micro-managing. The action just keeps flowing. The typical mundane busy work of hard-core strategy games is kindly removed here, in order to get to the good bits. There are plenty of strategic decisions to be made, but you get to think in a sense of what you WANT to do, not what you HAVE to do.

Certain things are a little tricky to get used to. Sailing East is much harder than sailing West. Your crew slowly becomes restless over time, forcing you to pay them off and take a few months vacation before going back to sailing.

After you get to the ripe old age of about 35, your health starts to decline, and you might have to retire before too long. This takes you to an amusing detailed report on your post-pirate life. Hopefully you are a Governor instead of a Pauper!

The graphics and sound are cartoony. Everything looks like it's from a Disney/Pixar movie, and the voice acting is done in jibberish, like in The Sims. Subtitles are in English, though. The cartoony feel is not bad, but is sometimes just a little TOO campy.

The controls are a bit strange. While you can use a mouse, you're better off doing the mini-games using the numpad. It's a little awkward at first, but you get used to it fairly soon.

Pirates! is one of my all time favorite games. Two thumbs and a wooden peg-leg up!

It's a roguelike, with graphics! Now maybe some of those ascii snubbers will look and say "Is that a picture of a bat? I'm not attacking the alphabet this time?"
More "lite" than a hardcore roguelike, I think it's highly accessible for casual gamers, and a good amusement for roguelike vets, too.
