tl;dr: The game has it's appeals that keeps people playing it. Play with friends on a modded private server and you'll probably have a good time.

So here's the thing.

ARK has been a love hate relationship for me. I loved it enough that, at the time writing this, I put over 2200 hours into it (which is child's play compared to some), but I also hated it enough that I took a 3 year break from playing it.

Ultimately, I came back again and was reminded how I personally enjoy the game while playing on a private server with friends.

The Pros:
-One of the few 3D survival sandbox games that allow you to do just about anything you want.
-The modding support is out of this world, and I would highly encourage everyone to use it.
-A great time burner. This game has a ton of time where you're either sitting around waiting or you're holding W going from place to place.
-Still being consistently updated (at the time of posting)

The Cons:
-Some would say it's buggy. I personally have encountered a minimum amount of bugs in my hours, but that's not to say there aren't any.
-Public Servers are basically a non-starter unless you have a good group to try and get a spot in and HOPE you don't get crushed by Alpha Tribes.
-You need to do your homework to know how to properly setup a single player experience that won't burn you out or frustrate you to the point you never play again.
-Still being consistently updated, which can cause down time on public or private servers.

Saying that, here are the people who I think would enjoy this game:

A) has a group to play with who has experience
B) is willing to do research about game settings and mechanics
C) is planning to play on a private server
D) all of the above

Now here's the big question. Would I recommend it to people?

Honestly, yes. Even within the negative reviews of this game, you see that they have thousands of hours put into the game. Can it be incredibly frustrating? Yes. Can it be incredibly rewarding? Also yes. It ultimately comes down to your own preference.
