This game is great. Truly an improvement on the original. It would be even better if it stopped crashing my computer.

I was thinking about this game a couple weeks ago because I saw something similar. Glad to see it's back and I look forward to playing it a lot.

I'm not saying this is the best game ever made, but the fact it has mixed reviews is utterly ridiculous. This is one of my favorite games I've ever played. It's not super complicated, the plot isn't groundbreaking, the graphics aren't high end, but yet there is an almost perfect simplicity to it. I have spent hundreds of hours on it, but it only feels like about half of the time. There are times where I'm almost convinced the computer and RNG is fixed against me, yet I still keep coming back because it is reliable fun.

It's a well designed, fun game. Unfortunately, the writing/humor is kind of lame and cringey.

Wait for this game to go on sale. It's quite fun for a while, but the content is limited and each update seems to make the game more overpowered. The requirements to unlock other characters is totally unreasonable unless you're lucky enough to exploit the game.

The game is fine and appropriately priced. Too bad it's developed by babies.

This game is a great example of something that is low cost, but has loads of replayability and seemingly endless room for improvement.

Don't let the rating scare you away. If you enjoy the game's combat, this DLC is worth it.

As a fan of the first game, I was really excited to play the sequel. Unfortunately it seems that, for now, there are a lot more shortcomings than I had expected.

PROS
  • Like the original, the game looks great, sounds great, and still manages to be fun at times despite the problems.

  • While the ending felt a little abrupt, it was one of the best sequences in the game. The surrealness of Hotline Miami is turned up to 11 when the character goes through a drug trip . It was nice to see something different and creative at the end.

CONS
  • I'll start with my biggest gripe: the content, or lacktherof. The game has less masks; there are less weapons (which the developer said there'd be MORE of), which means there's less variety of weapons during a level, so you're constantly seeing the same stuff; instead of unlocking weapons and masks through the scoring system, they're just unlocked during the story, so there's less reason to even play through it again; there's no secret puzzle pieces to collect for a secret; there's nearly nothing that this game really adds regarding content, aside from the level editor that we still have yet to see. It seems they cut back on so much content that one of the characters is almost a complete copy of others in the game. Near the end the son of the first game's final boss becames a playable character who, instead of unlocking masks, unlocks "styles". I later realized these styles had the EXACT same abilities as Corey, Tony, and Mark.

  • Another big problem is many factors in the gameplay. Some of the characters play alright, but others were a chore to play, particularly ones who can't pick up weapons. For example, the soldier is permanently stuck with whatever gun you pick at the beginning and a knife. I wouldn't mind this if the reloading wasn't such a hassle. To reload, you have to completely empty your gun, walk to wherever the ammo is and get a small amount of ammo (I remember the sniper getting 4 bullets and the rifle getting something like 10). So you're constantly having to run back and forth to get ammo. This itself wouldn't be as big of an issue if they didn't necessitate the need for guns. HL2 did add bigger floors and more enemies, but many of the floors are so big and vacant that you can't see the enemies who are shooting at you. So you have to decide between inching close to enough to spot them or luring them to you by jumping in and out of cover. The game feels like more of a slog when you have to stop running around like a bad ass and hide behind cover to wait.

  • HL2 has more of an emphasis on story by adding multiple characters with different stories, which I'm totally okay with. The problem is that the plot, the characters, and the dialogue are all so halfheartedly written. The character's stories have almost no resolution, we barely get to know any of them, and plot lines are so quickly dropped that it seemed pointless to include them in the first place. For example, the detective character has a subplot about him finding a serial killer. And by "subplot", I mean at the end of his levels he arrives at a crime scene, talks to an officer, and leaves 2 or 3 times. They end this story with one of the most cliched plot twists when we find out that HE was the killer all along! (Or was he?) . This doesn't really matter in the long run though, since it's immediately dropped and we never find out how it connected to anything in the first place.

  • This last one is more of a personal issue rather than an objective one. I felt that the r ape sequence was absolutely unnecessary. Now before I go off on my tangent, I want to preface this: I'm not a squeamish person who easily gets offended. I'm a writer too, and there's plenty of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up stuff I've come up with. And, to their credit, they included the option to skip it, which is the right way to handle graphic moments without outright censoring the game. The problem is that this scene adds NOTHING to the story or game. So why is it even included? When you include something traumatic like r ape in your story, it has to add up to something. Otherwise, it just looks like a cheap way to titillate your audience. Even more telling, this sequence happens right at the start of the game and then is quickly dropped. To me, it just seemed like an unnecessary inclusion to make the game seem more edgy. I'm not saying they feel that way, but if they do, I think that's reprehensible.

Hopefully they'll be able to fix these issues and add more content so that the game can reach its full potential. As of right now, it seems like a step backwards.
