Dead Island. 2 Stars

This game was tedious, dull, monotonous, repetitive, unvaried, unimaginative, uneventful to put it simply; it was BORING! To start, every mission in this game (both Main story missions, and Side Missions) are all the same. "Travel a great distance to gather a shiny (any object or goal that an NPC tells you to gather), and travel back, to show that you got it, proving that you did get it, we will reward you with a bat to fight off the zombies." Almost every mission follows this same formula. But that is not the worse of it. At least when you are walking back and forth for the first chapter, you got a nice view, live vivid colors, amazing ocean to glance at, fighting zombies never felt so peaceful... and then they take it all away!

Chapter 2 puts you in the city, one that has a chance to rain. The once beautiful scenes that made this game tolerable is destroyed! Live Blues and Greens, Rich Sand and a clear sky, is replaced with Grey... dull, slate grey... and it only gets worse. In the same chapter, near the end, it becomes a sewer traveling level, with just dark, reused path remain. The further this game goes on, the lazier it looks, what starts off on a high note, slowly, but steadily becomes something placed together with a copy and paste tool. Chapter 3 throws you into the jungle, with a lie, a vomit style brown and brownish green, with the hope of a rich environment a lie at this point, one can think that this cannot get worse.. Well, the final chapter lets just go to prison. More emptiness and uninspiring views. The environments in this open world game are just so pathetic and mundane. Having to see them again, while each character gave you, a fetch quest, turned hours into days that it made this open world game a chore if it was an open world game.

This game practically punishes the player for going off the normal path, and not an average punishment either. Going off path will not lead to difficult enemies, will not lead to traps or timed based jumps. No, going off the main road in this game could lead the player into incomplete areas of the game, places that would normally leave the player trapped, and having the player go back to the main menu. There are just too many areas where the player is designed not to go, but if they managed to find a way to get there, they remain trapped, but what is one to do, with a terrible map system to follow. Sometimes the map would lead to dead ends, to one of these many incomplete areas, or sometimes just not work at all.

As for the Ranking system... it is pointless (at least in single player). Zombies and bandits rank up with you, so all you get is a new skill to use, the enemies remain just as hard, so seeing a level 30 Zombie is no different that seeing a level 45. The only difference is you, and you might be able to boomerang a weapon back to you, or pick more locks... other than that, this was one of the most pointless leveling systems developed.

Finally, the story, it is there, and I guess it is supposed to be dramatic, but without getting into too many spoilers, you don't feel attached to the players or the crew members you obtain when something happens, everyone is just a generic cardboard cut out of what a character should be. Between these reasons, and the non-playable characters, the game has no charisma to speak of, it all falls flat.

The Game runs, and I did complete it, so it isn't a broken mess, but just barely. I cannot endorse this game due to its many faults, its lazy development, and just god awful boring segments of nothing. It was a chore to complete the main game, and was relieved when it was all said and done, the only pros I can give this game is that it functions, but just that. Most of the game is slow paced, and not very rewarding to play. A sense of adventure is lost once you leave the beaches, the scene of a zombie threat is lessen once you have a useful weapon, and the story can put an insomniac to sleep. I can feel the lack of love that went into this game, and it shows.
