A neat King's Field like? It's basically reminiscent of that.

Combat is definitely a bit clunky. Whilst I appreciate the ability of kicking. Kicking doesn't lead into a combo and gives you too little breathing room. If the first kick, used five seconds apart, like dodging, didn't cost stamina I could see it being used offensively.

The main problem I had with the combat wasn't really anything major. It's just that some enemies have super fast attacks which are nearly impossible to block if you go by reaction time or either block a lot. In particular the normal enemies with chairs or folding screens, midgets with lamps which can follow up with an attack of their own whenever you attack them with something that doesn't stagger them and even the Demon King himself who has a bash attack with his staff that just come out too quickly. Of course I do realise that's probably why you should use the dodge, but even with dodge it's reaction timing which is quite hard to get since they connect super fast, faster than most other telegraphed attacks.

Bosses in the game are not really difficult, most can be kited and cheesed easily, with the exception of the Demon King on a first playthrough, though even then you could feasibly cheese him with the bow and matchlock rifle. Only taking a few shots to take down on ng+.

As for the areas of the game, I do think I liked the first tower the best. Seems where most the polish went into. The second and third tower aren't necessarily afterthoughts but seem like they could have used a bit more time in the oven. In particular going back and forth in the Tower of Lamentation. Enemies respawning in the main pool room was a particular pain point for me. I think having a option for less sparse enemy spawns would help with the horror aspect as well as not knowing when enemies will respawn.

Tower of Lamentation and Tower of Crushing Assembly could both have benefitted from having a few more rooms. A third floor for Lamentation and a few more rooms for Crushing Assembly. They feel rather small in comparison to the Tower of Repetition. Also would have loved to have maps for all the floors of the second and third tower even if it wouldn't be that much of a plus.

I think the biggest flaw is not having a fourth tower dungeon to give that final area feel of the game. The leadup to the final battle is climactic but could have used some buildup. I even thought there was going to be a fourth one instead of just a spiral staircase. Imagine the fourth dungeon as just a constant battle where all enemy types spawn and fight eachother relentlessly while you cut your way through. It doesn't have to be long, just enough to give the feel that it is the Demon King's tower. The chase at the end is perfect for the final spurt before the boss.

Another flaw is the lack of secrets. Having most rooms inaccessible is reasonable but boring. There's only three secret doors in the entire game. All three are in the first area of the game. One can arguably called the only secret since it's the only one the map doesn't highlight. The other two are mandatory for progression in the first tower.

NG+:

NG+ offers two new secrets, three new enemies and a bunch of new weapons. Secrets include: A secret boss in the first tower's basement floor, (remember to collect the Pagoda idol and Demon King's mask after defeating the Demon King in your second playthrough as these items appear in the final underground river area before the end credits, the Pagoda Idol is behind you when the Demon King's killing you cutscene ends and the Demon King's mask that was visible in the fog on the first playthrough is pickup able. This secret bossfight is only accessible on your third playthrough or called NG+1 in the save menu.) and one in the second tower, the bathhouse with the green pool room, requiring a single use of salt leftover from the first tower. The two of the three new enemies are nothing interesting in my opinion, a variant of the floating skull which poisons you instead, a variant of the spitting poison enemy which deals Rot damage and the blacksmith's sister which acts as a mild replacement to the Nuribotoke if you've put the Buddha statue back in the Butsudan. The blacksmith's sister appears as a roaming enemy in all towers except the last one, giving you Shirikodamas ranging from 1-10 after you defeat her. Talking to her afterwards gives you the reward, only once until you defeat her again. Makes it easy to farm upgrade mats for all the new NG+ weapons. The sister will also not attack you and roam around if you have zero Shirikodamas in your inventory, but having just one will cause her to attack you.

Bugs and errors section: Here I'll list all bugs or inconsistences I've encountered in the game.

Tower of Repetition has a sliding door which goes and clips into the wall instead of switching sides like all others, it's the one near the basket with two sakes on the third floor.

Tower of Lamentation has the Brown Gem Wheel respawn in the pantry on the ground when reentering the second floor, giving you access to an unlimited amount though thankfully they do disappear from your inventory when going into your next playthrough. This only happens in NG+ when the Shrine Maiden is no longer trapped.

Tower of Crushing Assembly on the third floor after the round room with the bell, the two cell areas are inconsistent and the walls in some of the inaccessible cells are flipped or mirrored incorrectly, letting you see the world through them, plus one of them has a breakable crate but no way to enter the cell.

Using the Banish talisman on the unkillable floating Rot enemies in the Tower of Crushing Assembly will banish them, but using the talisman if they're on the ground will incorrectly kill their AI, but not banish them. Meaning they will remain in place and not do anything even if you attack and down them again. Using a second Banish talisman whilst they are up will fix the issue banishing them as normal, but I doubt this is an intended effect seeing as they don't react at all.

The Banish talisman also playing the banishing sound effect where it hits even if you do not hit an eligible target is quite annoying as the sound is loud when near.

In NG+1 and onward the amount of Shirikodamas needed to upgrade a weapon or a armor becomes bugged and stops showing up in the blacksmith's menu. After level 10 you can still upgrade your weapon and armor, each upgrade requiring the usual +2 Shirikodamas to the added amount, meaning you can upgrade as long as you remember that it's +2 for each weapon level. At level 10 it's 20. At level 11 it's 22 and so on.

Final Score: 8 / 10

Overall I enjoyed the game and would recommend it, even at the full price for a short two to three hour game if you just play it normally. But be aware that the game has oldschool style clunky combat. The NG+ doesn't offer much, only needing three playthroughs in total to discover all the extra content in the game, replayability is only if you enjoy becoming super powerful as subsequent NG+ allow you to upgrade your weapon, armor, health and stamina further.

What can I say? I've done everything I can in the game.

Loved it from start to finish. But.. I do think even the developers can do better next time.

Please... Miyazaki Feet-sama... no more Ulcerated Tree Spirits... not in the base game. And not in the dlc.

In light of EDF 6's disastrous launch with the third party account linking fiasco.

Just get this one instead. It goes on sale pretty often and almost all EDF games are basically the same. You just get more of the braindead fun I subscribe to. So if this is your starting point in the series I'd really recommend it.

The tutorial isn't long and actually forces you to participate in the first missions. Instead of... whatever they thought the forced unskippable tutorial in EDF 6 would do for players. Besides I find the voice acting in this game to be superior to the sixth release.

Newly edited review here.

Nevermind... I'll still buy the same game for the same price to experience the fun again. Though do mind the Epic Account linking. Just as good as EDF 5 if not even better. And the story... is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane.

Edited at 2024-10-08.
Old Review below.

Do I love EDF and all of it's previous titles, yes.

Can I still call out the publishers (not the developers) for releasing the same type of game for the same price after five years? Yes.

Why am I calling them out? Because they didn't state ahead of time that you'd have to use a third party account to play the game. Really brings to mind the Helldivers 2 fiasco doesn't it? Where it also wasn't the developers (Arrowhead's) fault that the PSN account linking fiasco took place. It was something Sony themselves decided to bring up to ♥♥♥♥ everything up on Steam. Where Sony is now responsible for the game not being playable in 180 countries that it may have been bought in.

While this honestly isn't as egregious... I've gotten used to people using Epic's tools for their games. But they should be upfront about needing an actual account... as this is completely illegal to advertise it in this way. Much like the Helldivers 2 situation.

But who's going to care? I wish I had enough time to care. But just like Helldivers 2 everyone gave up after a few weeks. Even though they still haven't fixed the problem.

Honestly... if you haven't played EDF before... just buy the previous one. Earth Defense Force 5. It's basically the same thing. And doesn't require any of this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Played that game damn near till completion with friends.

The start of Arrowhead Game Studios.

Probably one of the most fun friendly fire games I've played. Playing with friends is a must. As most of the fun comes from the chaotic experience of friendly fire in dangerous situations.

(If you're playing. I can recommend both the Magicka:Vietnam DLC and Magicka:The Stars are Left DLC. However be aware that Magicka:The Stars are Left is quite hard and probably still has that game breaking bug in the final chapter. It can be fixed with fan patches. But I found them quite enjoyable.

However. Do not buy the Magicka:Dungeons and Gargoyles DLC. It is not made by "Arrowhead" and the quality really shows. It's bad. Real bad. Not worth your time. Just rooms and rooms filled with enemies. "Pieces Interactive" would go on to make Magicka 2 after Paradox took the Magicka IP hostage from Arrowhead. Magicka 2 is a game for another review.)

After the recent Sony controversy regarding Helldivers 2 I can proudly announce that this game does not require you to log in with a PSN account to inflate Sony's statistics and let your personal information be stolen in data breaches that happen every half a year due to Sony's incompetence.

Overall, play this game if you want to know how Helldivers started. With their prior experience in making Magicka 1 which I also recommend. Especially the satirical Vietnam DLC.

(Not Magicka 2, Paradox let a mobile game studio make that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mess of a game and took away Arrowhead's Magicka IP too.)

As of 2025-06-14. The game is now unbanned in several countries. This marks the time I can finally recommend the game again. Having received things substantial improvements since it's release.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

As of 2024-05-12. The game is still banned by Sony from being purchased in 177 countries despite the fact people could purchase and play it fine before. So I'll be letting this negative review stay.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

As of 2024-05-05. We've won. For now. So I can recommend the game again. Below is the former review of the Sony PSN controversy. This is no longer relevant. Unless of course. Sony decides to pull a quick one on you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2024-05-03.

If this was any other day I would have recommended the game in a heartbeat. But when Sony decided that it would be mandatory to log in with a PSN account I will not log in to play a game I can't play with my friends. After all. I bought the game because of friends in the first place.

Let it be known: In over 170 countries you cannot make a PSN account. And giving false information let's Sony ban your account if you try to circumvent it. And in some countries. Like the UK (United Kingdom) you have to give personal information to even register an account. Your face, Your ID, Your Name, Address. Etc. etc. Not to mention their constant data breaches. The most out of any company I have ever seen. They practically have one every six months. Millions if not billions of people's personal information has been leaked. Including credit cards and other stuff like your government ID.

I will not play the game until I can play it with my friends. I might even refund the game. But I will stand by my principles. Even if that means I won't ever launch it again.

Bought this game on a whim and enjoyed the first half of the game. The end was however unfortunately not as fluid as the beginning of the game. The main problem this game suffers from is it's poor game mechanics.

Dodging is good but often enemies track you to an insane degree ensuring you'll always be hit no matter how good you think you are.

There is almost no visual indication that you are hitting an enemy. They just freeze up instead of having a stagger animation.

There is a wide variety of weapons but unfortunately they all deal about the same amount of damage with no single weapon being a direct upgrade if you don't count their attack animation with has wider reach or faster speed than others.
This made it very hard to calculate which weapon would be effective against different enemies. Since the tooltips for blunt weapons indicate they lower enemy armor, I assumed this would mean that my weapon would deal more damage overtime against single opponents or bosses since I would keep hitting them or maybe I would deal more damage against knights who are by all definition wearing armor.

This is not the case. It is just a part of the weapon lore. The game would very much benefit a detailed menu for damage or atleast the exact effects of accessories and items since the game does not tell you that very well.

Secondly the endgame is a slog and feels very, very rushed. Most of the bosses deal insane amounts of damage on a single hit and can one hit kill you leaving little room for error. That does not even account for the amount of pits in this game that emulate the classic Castlevania death.

The best part about the game and most unique is the fact that outfits change your entire character. While this has very little effect on actual moves as they remain the same, it does change a few animations which are unique for each outfit. I found myself using the starting Danache Summoner outfit due to it's tiptoe animation for jumping.

I also found the easter egg items in this game to be a nice addition.

I will sadly not replay the game due to it's sheer difficulty in the endgame. I can safely say that if the game was easier towards the end it would be okay in my book but I only got one ending and I won't go back since I don't have the patience to sit through one hit kills for any longer than I have to.

Anime Dark Souls

Extremely enjoyable but has a few flaws that I think stands out.

Cons:

Slow to a crawl item usage. Dark Souls 1 style.
Combat is somewhat clunky. Can't cancel out of item usage, skills and attacks.

Pros:

Character Creation is best one I've used in a game in the last decade.

Story is deep and connects to the God Eater series which means fans of those Monster Hunter esque games will be able to connect.

Same devs as God Eater series as well and THEY ACTUALLY LISTEN TO FANS. Alot of patches and bug fixes that has made the game more enjoyable for me.

Having owned Terraria almost ever since it came out I gotta say it saddens me that I never made a review on it. It's good like extremely good for a survival sandbox game being only rivaled by Minecraft and the newest one being Starbound. All of those games are picks I'd recommend to play if you havn't already. I won't go into detail about the pros or cons as there is to much to explain in an easily written review about YES or NO.

I won't say play it if you like 2D games or Minecraft but I'd recommend it. Because no matter who you are it should be fun for you to play. It's like picking up a book just randomly and thinking that it's fun to read for some reason.
