I'll echo what a lot of the positive reviews say. It takes more than a few hours to accustom yourself to both the genre of extraction shooters, but also the specificities of Marathon itself. Having done that though, I am absolutely hooked.

The visual style, sound design, world building, and gameplay are all impeccable and coalesce into a package that immerses you like no other. Maybe I'm a mark, but the lore they have laid out so far is very intriguing and the ceiling is incredibly high for where they can take it and how they can weave it into the fabric of the game. Somehow they've managed to make voice/text logs engaging, so even the task of completing fetch quests and codex entries in solo is worth going through the gameplay loop of earning and risking your gear. On the top of that, Bungie is very actively listening to feedback, patching the game and providing better rewards in the season pass, while also providing neat ARG content for hinting/releasing new content for the game.

The game rewards skill, but it also rewards intelligence and map knowledge. Gear is of course valuable, but thankfully surprisingly balanced, at least not now at season start. There may be a point where this changes though, but overall it feels more about creating an enjoyable build that plays to the shell you enjoy. You largely control the skirmishes you find yourself in, so that imbalance may never even matter. While all of this is very engaging as people start to learn how to play and interact with the systems provided to them, as with any game of this style, I am worried about the longevity and ability to draw in new players.

Even if I play this for the first season, the game was well worth the money. I really can't find a thing I'm disappointed or dissatisfied with. There may be an easier way of denoting differences in cores/mods and what stats/bonuses they apply for ease of looting. The vault could use different viewing schemes to just show text by default without having to hover over each one. Ultimately very small nitpicks that I've dealt with in other games and I will gladly deal with here. I just really hope they find a way to expand the lore and game in a compelling way. I'm ready to sink in a thousand hours, just give me a reason to.

Note. Coming from a player that hasn't played destiny or halo since halo 2. I bought in on appeal alone and after the devlog going over the reworks from the alpha. Also, my hours so far are all solo and all Recon. Do with that what you will.
