I'm still fairly early in the game, but I'm having a blast so far and hope to update my review as I play more! I'm admittedly a sucker for anything with a big sword, so GIGASWORD was always super up my alley. I love the main mechanic of being able to pick up and drop the sword as needed to reach certain areas and complete challenges. The combat is simple but super satisfying and I enjoy the Zelda-like puzzles. So far both the combat and puzzles have been at the right amount of difficulty for me, where I have to use my brain a bit to succeed, but it's not overly punishing to the point of frustration. Sometimes it takes me a few tries to defeat a boss or complete a platforming challenge, but I haven't felt lost as to what I should be doing to progress. I'm also more invested in the story than I expected to be. The soundtrack is great and gets stuck in my head even when I'm not playing.

If you enjoy Souls-like games, this one is a no-brainer purchase. If you absolutely hate the combat in From Software's Souls games, Elden Ring's won't change your mind; it's exactly the same. If you're unfamiliar with this style of game but want to give one a try, Elden Ring is a great entry point. It has abundant checkpoints to alleviate worries about lost progress, and the fantastic (in all senses of the word) open world design means that getting stuck on a boss encounter won't block you from continuing to play; just go explore somewhere else and make progress in a different way until you feel ready to make another attempt. If you're really struggling, it's possible to summon AI-controlled "spirits" for assistance, or use online co-op to summon other players.

Now I'm going to straight up gush about the open world in this game for a bit. This game's world is stunningly beautiful and haunting. Every direction that you can look would be worthy of being framed and put on a wall, or used as cover art for a metal album. The open world is filled with distinct landmarks with which to orient yourself, and lots of verticality means there's no straight path directly to where you want to go, which creates a true feeling of adventure and exploration as you navigate and come across mysteries (and maybe even discover a shortcut). The world map when you start the game is mostly blank, showing only some roads and where to find "map pieces" that fill in the details of the topography. Contrary to most other contemporary open world games, the world map is not filled with an overwhelming amount of icons. The game will only add icons to mark locations you've already visited, the locations of NPCs you've already met, and on some rare occasions a location that a quest needs you to go. You as the player can place additional icons on locations you want to remember, so your map has as many or as few icons as are useful to you.

Mediocre port of a fantastic game. Worth it if you haven't played Persona 3 before. Despite what it says at the start of the game, I recommend playing as the female protagonist first, and then playing the male protagonist as NG+ (or watching the movies) if you loved the game and never played FES. First playthroughs of this game often take at least 70 hours, and there's no reason to spend that time playing the inferior path through the game before getting to the improved one.

All of the quality of life improvements Portable brought to previous versions of the game are present. However, aside from a couple that were added specifically for this port (Quick Save and adjustable difficulty settings), certain features remain exclusive to the female protagonist, such as selecting between two Velvet Room attendants, and the improved Social Link mechanics based on Persona 4. There was a missed opportunity to update the male protagonist to have feature parity with the female protagonist.

The music sounds great, and so does the voice acting in both English and Japanese, aside from a cutscene near the beginning of the game where all audio is messed up. Character portraits look great, and the 3D models and textures in the dungeons are improved. The upscaling for the game's background images looks horrible though, and a lot of sound effects sound noticeably worse than the PSP version.

I love this game, but I can't recommend it because of the poor netcode and the addition of Battle Passes in December 2020. There's other fighting games on this platform that feel just as good to play, but don't have that kind of slimy monetization. DLC content that you need to pay for, that you're not even guaranteed to get if you don't put hours into grinding the game, isn't tolerable.
It's a shame because this is a beginner-friendly game I would have loved to play with more people, but I already had trouble recommending such an expensive game, and adding Battle Passes on top of that not only makes it impossible for me to recommend to others, but it kills my own motivation to keep playing this game in the future. Even if I don't entirely stop playing, it won't be a main focus for me anymore, and I'd encourage everyone to play other fighting games.
