I wanted it to be over long before it seemed to want to be over. The game is far longer than it' storytelling, and definitely its mechanics, can justify. Lots of tedious backpedal combat, and an anthology of horror settings that are just flavors of shooting or slashing lone zombies with too much health.

here is a hint of something charming in the story itself, but those moments are far between, and kind of a bit more certain of themselves than they earn. With characters in the story gushing over how masterful the sub-stories are... of a pretty generic bit about dudes fighting zombies in mediaval times or on a pirate ship.

Manage your expectations and experience a fun narrative adventure set in a time loop. It's Groundhog Day dealing with depression.

Do not expect Disco Elysium. Do not expect an RPG where you get different approaches. But do expect some fun and clever writing.

In the tradition of the best of Telltale Games. Choices don't have tons of impact, at least not until the end, but there is much to love in just watching the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ become friends with each other and fight supervillains.

It's weird. Being as old as I am and getting to the end of a game and hesitating because I didn't want it to end. Seeing something from my childhood in new lights and crying at it all over again.

I'm so used to seeing things from my youth being done a disservice. I won't say Rebirth is perfect, I won't even say it's as good as the original. But it's still damned good. The team understood the assignment when they made this. It is worthy of standing alongside the media that I love.

A promising start and a very disappointing end. I have more questions after completing than I did at the beginning. And the few answers I do have don't mean anything to me.

I've gone back and forth on this game multiple times. And here on my third uninstall I think I'm settled. Or I hope.

It's a fun game that is ultimately not worth too much of your time. Or it can be fun, but it certainly doesn't seem that it cares about being fun.

A few characters (called Descendants) allow for a fun power fantasy of killing loads of enemies while getting showered by glowing icons of loot. And this is what you'll be doing for a while.

But eventually you'll find yourself like I found myself. Spending three or more hours a night in a desert, no other players in sight, figuring out a loop of the three same mind numbingly boring activities. And you will walk away from those three hours with no more than you started. Then you'll go on to repeat that for several days in a row. A week can then pass of no progress, no indication you're getting any closer to that one thing you need.

What the developers clearly want you to do is reach for your wallaet and buy what you're grinding for. What you should instead do is reach into your soul. What would happen if you got that one drop anyway?

Then you'd move to a different zone empty of other players to do those three same activities in some hills instead of a desert. Rinse. Repeat.

You have better things to do with your time than play this game.

A very good game stretched way too thin.

This game wears it's inspirations on it sleeves. Roguelites, survival crafting, driving, extraction. And it does it mostly well. The problem comes from the grind, the pacing, and the resulting stress. It has all the hardships of its inspirations, it has loss on death, everything has pitiful durability, there's timers everywhere you go. And revisiting an area you've been too recently just makes that area harder.

What I'm left with is feeling like every trip has only a smidge of progress. Or a serious risk of catastrophic backslide. I had to plan a trip to the far end of the map just for a single rare resource I need a ton of. I spend 30 minutes just getting there, have 5-10 minutes to find and grab what I need, everything on my car broke from the drive this far, and everything finishes falling apart when I have to make the mad dash home.

I want to see what's next, but I'm just too burnt out.

A walking sim elevated by good writing and being in the largely underserved genre of underwater horror. If that description interests you, grab it. Doubly so if you see it on sale.

Ship building can be fun. It can also be intensely frustrating for no reason.

That might be the end of the list of positives. Starfield is a game that tries to do a lot, but doesn't try to do any of it well. Exploration, storytelling, worldbuilding, buildcrafting, crafting, and characters are all things that are weaker than many contemporaries in gaming, but also weaker than in other Bethesda games of the past.

The main quest line is just a thin excuse to push you into New Game +. The world doesn't do anything or appreciate what few complexities it does have. The exploration is completely pointless as their is no reward or gameplay loop to incentivize any of it. It doesn't even have a log of things scanned for the completionist. Crafting might as well not even exist. And there's just nothing engaging in the moment to moment play. We're still doing very basic shooting with some dragon shouts that may as well have been pulled over unchanged from Skyrim.

But maybe you have a shipbuilding addiction like me.
