Look, its not perfect.
Definitely not what was promised, i keep looking back at the 2013-2018 teasers and thinking i should get into modding.
I agree with the general consensus - Its a decent game, its just marred by huge over-hype and terrible launch - however i pre-ordered the game and was awake for 72 hours from dec 10-12. I had fun. It was fun. I only encountered one game-breaking bug on my second play through (late dec 2020) and i only lost 30 mins of progress to it thanks to the game's rampant autosave.

Pick it up cheap, i'd reccomend it at full price for anyone who enjoyed Fallout 4, its that kinda shtick.

TL;DR: Good game, balanced in normal mode, balanced with a friend in expert, hectic trial and error with arena design in master. Runs on potatoes, takes up less space than an OS, hours of fun and easy to learn. Hard to master (mode).

Very Long; Read if you care:
Spoilers are in spoiler text. Kinda just ruin the surprise tbh, nothing major to spoil

Over the last 5 years I've played Terraria on 4 different platforms, amassing probably somewhere in the region of 1000 hours over Xbox 360, 3DS, Mobile and PC, in ascending play time, and I've seen the game grow and change in many ways over the course of development, the only boss i haven't, and probably never will, defeat is Ocram, but i honestly cannot care less for going back from the PC version. Despite there being controller support, the best way to enjoy this game is definitely with mouse and keyboard, I've found that building and combat are far easier, notably the mechanical bosses are harder on normal with some of the console and mobile controls than with mouse and keyboard on expert mode. This may just be personal preference, so take it with a grain of salt, but if you are considering giving up on the game when using controller support, give m+k a shot. I also encourage staying away from the wiki on your first play through, having

Now that I've got the two precursory things i wanted to mention out of the way, i can get into my thoughts on aspects of the game. The three main things i want to talk about are the combat, building and farming elements of the game, as each play a significant part in the game.

Firstly, the bit that I've seen most commonly compared to Minecraft (which ill mainly be comparing it to in this chunk), the building aspect of the game. In Terraria, similar to Minecraft, the whole world is destructible (if you have the right tools), giving you the blocks and materials you need to replicate them in return. To me, the primary difference between the two games' systems is the necessity in both. In Minecraft you can get by with a dimly lit hut made of dirt with enough room for a table, furnace and a bed, but you can use buildings to assist you if you want. For example you can go out of your way to harvest materials and mobs to make an iron golem farm and give up mining for anything but diamonds. In Terraria however, building is essential, and quite honestly more enjoyable than Minecraft's building. You can get by with a lil dirt shack with a door and a few objects, certainly in pre-hardmode at least, but you will benefit far more from constructing farms and buildings for your NPCs. This seemed like a turn-off for me when i first started on mobile, i didn't want to take care of a of homeless twunts, but eventually when i was first fighting the final boss ha, nope the wall of flesh, i realised how much help NPCs could do, between the Nurse and the Dryad, and Beenades. In the late game its also worth farming for accessories (i'll get to them) which building will massively help with. The 3:1 block:person ratio over 2:1 ratio Terraria gives you also makes the building more complex and detailed. Oh yeah, and there are many times more blocks, items and styles than Minecraft might ever have.

Combat. Oh the combat. Back in the day, when i was pretty simple, or at least i thought it was. There are 4 classes (there were 5 at some point but, lets face it, throwing class was not viable without beenades), Melee, Ranged, Magic and Summoner. I've played through most of Master mode (his laptop's mobo died right before tentacle boi ) as a summoner, which is probably the weakest of the classes *cough cough* Terraprisma broken *cough cough* (yeah i got TP on master, hah, no biggie, whatcha gonna do bout it?) , with a buddy playing ranger. Combat will fall into three types, general combat, events and bosses, each class can approach all three in vastly different styles, even within one class, which is part of the reason I've been able to get so much fun out of this game. Each engagement, especially with bosses and events, changes depending on your weapons, armour, accessories and where you're fighting, from having the deciding factor in normal to every last percentage counting in master. Again combat changes from difficulty to difficulty, i spent most of my time in normal just face-tanking shots, then trying to dodge contact damage and large attacks, and finally having to learn every attack pattern and trying to dodge everything on master. Probably the worst bit of the game is making arenas in the underground/cavern jungle for the Queen Bee and that plant twunt but it makes a world of difference on Expert. Then add to the mix movement accessories and modifiers and then you have a wild range in potential survivability and damage dealing.

Now for probably the part that's consumed the most of my time: grinding. I swear RNG hates me. I killed 76 enchanted swords before i got the blade staff. Its a 1/35 drop chance. Enchanted sword 78 and 83 gave me two more blade staffs. Don't regret it though, probably my favourite weapon. Generally grinding in this game can be done AFK, build an arena add lava, go do your taxes, have a run, whatever. Doesn't change that some accessories drop with a 1/80 chance from a mob that can two shot you (master) and spawns once every 10 minutes, it gets frustrating. Despite a lot of my farming being active "find stuff and kill it" farming i remember very little of it because of how fun the rest of the game is.

Now time for some of the larger gripes i have. I say large, they're more constant minor annoyances.
-The smart cursor button changed between 1.3.5 and 1.4. I've thrown a couple of things in the bin rather than selling.
-The jungle, you need to be constantly on your toes to not die, and you spend tonnes of time there late-game.
-Summoners have nothing worthwhile between start and imp, fledgling's AI is whack and it took me 3000 slimes for a staff
-Graveyards, absolutely hate em, my cool arena full of my own failure now has zombies
-I always throw pink gel away then need it.
-Fishing is alright, but very little incentive when not going for potions (i was too stupid to use potions until i came back for
master mode, but i was fishing for ores and reaver shark (rip) before)

But then again, I've spent £0.02 for the last 360 hours of play, so i feel that that's incentive enough to buy the game, the pure value for money, and comparatively little money at that. I've made worse investments in my life, and some which i wish i could get back into, lookin at you warframe, but Terraria is one that not only I but my friends want to return to, which is something i value above a lot of other things. Sad warframe noises, again. But anyway, why not pick it up in these trying times, if you've spent time reading to this point you've nothing else to do, go pick up the game. Also, lemme know if you do pick it up and enjoy it, I'd love to hear someone's firsthand opinion who can string a sentence together, Bruce.

Bloody madness with friends, screaming, yelling and weird lag induced glitches will ensue. When we play between games of seige, CS, and other games, or whilst waiting for people to get online, we often go on for hours, ending up with 100+ points per player.

A very nice game with very fun mechanics and game play, either if you decide to go in rambo or assassinate everyone on the map. I enjoy killing people and then sneakign off to kill thier friends, either by hitting them from very far off with a scilenced pistol or a throuwn weapon and then waiting for thier friend sto stand over them where you then rinse and repeat, opr run in with the katana and destroy everybody whilst feeling awsome and deflectign all the bullets. The only problem that i have encountered so far that ruins the fun, is that the hit detection appears to be bit dodgy, and projectiles wont hit at close range or just pass straight through enemies.

Three Examples:
  • I was running from a mod of enemies with katanas, running at em head first, i whip out the pistol and unload 3 magazines at close range (less than a metre) and none of them affected the horde
  • i was using the shield weapon, which bounces from enemy to enemy and kills them without leaving blood, so i throw it and it passes straight through the guard i aimed it at and smashes a window behind him alertign the whole house to my prescence. i may as well have shto the wall whith a sniper rifle.
  • I was stood next to a bloke with a shotgun and i tried to melee him with the shield, but instead smashed the window behind him and got a face full of buckshot.

Overall i would recommentd the game as although this small bug is irritating from time to time the whole of the rest of the game is fun in the hour or so ive played so far, and i believe that as its still in early access, the hit detection will be fixed or i will find out i have some odd glitch or bug, or that i am alternatively an idiot who just likes to type when he's bored so wrote a review of this game. this game is worth picking up due to the modest price tag and the amount of fun You or I will doubtlessly have.
