Iunno. I feel conflicted on this game in spite of having spent so many hours getting into it. As it is I'm kinda forced to give either a positive or negative review, and unfortunately I think there's just too many things weighing down the experience to really let me give it a full recommendation.

Ignoring the glitches which have ABSOLUTELY killed me unfairly once or twice (this by itself is a pretty big issue) I do have fun playing this game. There's not that much enemy variety, and you'll find yourself tackling nearly every situation the same way you did the last 5 locations you visited, but having to rush from one place or another as your infection slowly ticks your health down in hopes of reaching the end is interesting! But I think this is where the game starts to fumble, as the in-game mechanic of infection just isn't that compelling or that well balanced with the way it's executed.

Part of it is due to how absurdly generous the game can get with the amount of resources it can give you in any given run.. whether you play it slow or fast, you'll eventually find your backpack filled with nothing but restorative items and weapons that you simply cannot ever hope to use naturally in that playthrough. I'd often end up with medical items being 1/2 of my encumberance because one bathroom's medical cabinet happened to store 2 medkits and 6 painkillers again and again. Whilst this issue was remedied somewhat by the 1.1 patch, where instead of being a bit mindful of what you're carrying now, you instead just hoarded EVERYTHING and dealt with the miniscule penalty.. the issue still stands. The game is just too generous with it's resources. And this in turn, both causes anything that isn't truly IMMEDIATELY lethal to just be a small hindrance, and inventory management to be a chore.

Another thing are the traps. Some of these are just unreasonably damaging for how hard they are to notice sometimes. Explosive traps and turrets come into mind, as even with just a quarter of your HP filled with infection, they deal MASSIVE HP damage whenever you get hit, which in some cases can get to just one-shot you, even at max HP. There's no damage trail off the further you are from explosives, you either get hit or you don't, which often causes situations where you think you're far enough, only to die to it anyways. And turrets don't make it clear to what they're aiming onto, nor whether their bullets will be stopped by a blockade at all.. which again, leads to you dying. The amounts of times I've died from a stray barrel in the lab being blown up, which then caused another active, exploding barrel to be flinged my direction is infuriating to say the least.

This all leads back to how infection works. It's just a ticking timer on your HP, where if you don't just go from one place to another taking every single antiviral and injecting yourself with them every time like a drug addict, your max HP will start dropping down from nearly everything. Zombie attacked you? Infection goes up. Just existing? Infection goes up. You stepped too close to a fat zombie and it blew up on you? Infection goes WAY up. Everything is designed in such a way that it desperately wants to eat away at your max HP. Which means getting unfairly killed by traps and explosives (sometimes your own!) you can't properly see in time becomes far more likely. And since medical items only heal flat amounts, your medkits and painkillers drop in value in real time the longer the run goes on for, until they are even worse than the basic bandages you get in dozens, which means it's just another thing weighing your inventory down at that point.

There's also other balance related things like how shotguns are just undisputably underpowered compared to most other guns.. or how stamina items aren't that useful as running out of stamina doesn't even stop you from just beating up a poor zombie on the street senseless with just your fists... or even how armored zombies are the least fun things to take care off... but I believe that more or less speaks on how many little things just soil the experience when I think the game could be more.

I really do think that if you were to adjust just a few values here and there, the game could genuinely be a lot more fun each run. But until something changes on that front, I'll keep this review as a negative one.

This game's story is a charismatic little gem that has an incredibly charismatic set of characters, a lot of personality to it, and it will leave a lasting impression on you for sure, it's definitely something that, even the characters that give off a bad vibe, get some kind of characterization to them.

..but the GAME part of the game is what really drags it down for me. It's still a superbly written game by all means, but if puzzle platforming is not your thing, you'll probably find it tedious to be switching between cubes back and forth, inching your way fowards just so you can get to the next piece of spoken dialogue that the game has to offer, and trust me, those pieces of dialogue alone is enough to carry the game's weight.

It's still good, great even, but do keep that in mind that's the only that thing separates this from a mediocre platformer, to a charming little tale about cubes. At least, in my eyes.

So lemme make this clear, I've played OWH and OWH+ a good deal, and I bought the game expecting something akin to a remaster, or well, a remix even if you can call it that. And I REALLY wanted to like the game too, trust me I TRIED.

But I cannot do it, it's just... it's just a myriad of unsightly problems and technical issues, as well as gameplay changes that just makes this one in particular so unpleasant to play.

From small things like having bad control layouts for the PC release, to very essential things like the map showing enough of the terrain and the clock not there AT ALL to tell you when to fight the Fallen Angel, as well as making spending Levels... really really hard other than to just save. It's a mouthful and I'm not sure if I'm willing to put up with it.

It's still not a BAD game by any means... it's just... not as good or polished gameplay-wise as the original were, thus why I can't recommend it.

Honestly if you're wondering if this is a good place to start with the series, I'd rather suggest you to buy OWH+, it's cheaper and more fleshed out anyways.

Lemme just say this, it is exactly what it sets out to be. An online 2D-shooter with stick figures on them.
It doesn't really do anything amazing with itself, in fact it CAN get repetitive, but it is REALLY fun for a completely free game. No P2W features, no freemium, nothing at all of that sort. That and it can run on a damn potato, so it's definitely worth a look for low-spec computers.

Give it a try, I say. Definitely isn't bad, but it isn't amazing either. It's free so, what do you really have to lose?

I mean, at this point if you're reading the reviews for a game that's both this old and this well acclaimed, pretty sure you don't need another review to tell you again everything this game does brilliantly fine, do we now?

It's a good game. Really good, get if it you can, literally a staple of most people's Steam libraries at this point.
