If Chapter 6 isn't the last chapter then I'm going to quit the series.

I wanted to adore this chapter so much, and for a good time with my playthrough I did. The puzzles are fantastic and sometimes they're a bit of a headscratcher but in a good way. There were a few instances where the path ahead wasn't super obvious but I will chalk that up to "Skill Issue" on my part. In many ways I think this chapter is superior than the previous chapters, especially in its functionality. The voice actors performances are also top notch, Giblit and Lily especially, and the good parts are REALLY good, which makes the bad parts all the more vivid.

The biggest problem I've started to have with my replays is that most of the puzzles are pointless and serve no purpose to the context of the story as well, it's starting to feel like needless padding for the sake of introducing a new mechanic than continuing an otherwise interesting story, the other problem is the lore in this chapter is two thirds bloated flavor text that isn't interesting with only a few parts that actively enrich the story. The puzzles are good yes, but now that I go back through them I'm questioning as to why a good chunk of them are there in the first place because in context they don't serve a purpose, and in a story based horror game, context is VERY important.

The moment the game stops being fun is after "the reveal" and despite my subjective views on the Prototype's design, the last 2 chase sequences are not clear the first playthrough and have little to no wiggle room to recover from a slight mistake making it very trial and error on the first playthrough, even more so than every other chase sequence from all previous chapters put together, and everything afterwards feels like it undermines all the progress that was made with it's awful chase sequences and a conclusion that says "HOPE YOU'RE READY FOR CHAPTER 6 AND EVEN MORE CHAPTERS TO COME!" and I'm tired because how deep does this ding dang toy factory go? I'm left feeling exhausted like I did with Dragon Ball Z's Buu Saga.

As for the Prototype's design, I got the same sensation as a kid when Pennywise's true form was revealed which was "THAT'S WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE?!" and I feel like an opportunity was missed just making him a children's horror clown stapled on top of a spider body, or Possessed Pomni, and if that's what the design was originally going to be he should have been revealed in Chapter 4. For what it's worth, the design is good, but it doesn't fit for the character's role as the main antagonist. If it was for a pursuing mini-boss similar to Mr. X in Resident Evil 2 then it could work, here it's beyond underwhelming, it wouldn't be a problem if the reveal wasn't put under heavy spotlight and teased for years, because of that it feels hollow to have an animatronic body with a scary clown face instead of a biomechanical nightmare which the previous chapters alluded. What's even funnier as I was writing this review I saw a post that stated the design was basically stripped of its original intention which is unfortunate that the revision made it worse.

I played the game on multiple playthroughs and lore hunted, even then I felt like we should have gotten to an end but it's felt more and more like a filler entry with only some important reveals leaving a feeling like that this should be renamed "Chapter 5 Part 1", and because of that I really appreciated Chapter 4 even more, warts and all.

I've heard a few people say "at least the devs look like they had fun making the game" and that comment has to be one of the biggest insults to an artist, developer, and creative of any kind, I say that as a game developer and artist myself.

If you wanna play Chapter 5, wait for it go on sale for at least 75% off. I'm envious of people who love this chapter or say it's their favorite because I want to join in on the fun, and I'm not even a die hard fan of the series.

With multiple playthroughs, finding every document, tape, cassette and collectable I can say that this chapter is by far the worst, I wanted to enjoy this chapter but I'm not going to lie to myself and anyone else.

A very satisfying conclusion, this little horror series was a genuine delight from start to finish.

My only nitpick are the puzzles might be a bit easier this time around compared to chapter 2 as I never once used the in game hints you have access to, though I did enjoy a particular puzzle that requires you to find the answer from the previous chapter.

I look forward to what the devs make in the future. Chapter 3 and the series as a whole gets a full recommendation

Picking up directly from the first chapter this one has puzzles that require a bit more focus from the previous game, but like the first game the mystery kept me going to want to see where it all leads to.

Definitely better than the first game, even if the puzzles might be a bit more frustrating, but that's adventure games in a nutshell.

Recommended!

The game takes a different direction to the "Mascot Horror" and "Analog Horror" genre and follows the core Adventure Game guide book.

The mystery of it all and where the story begins to take me kept me interested scrounging around for the different endings and lore tapes. The story didn't feel hollow either, and the logic on the puzzles reminded me of Secret of Monkey Island levels of silliness, but that's also what kept me going.

I would say this game is a good entry level to the horror genre and even to the adventure game genre. My time didn't feel wasted in the slightest, no padding that the mascot horror genre has been so known for.

I heavily recommend this game.

A miserable experience solo

Get passed the scuff, the utter garbage RNG, the HORRIBLE hitboxes, and the fact that you have the stamina of a Redditor, then you have something that starts being fun when you get to Level Fun+, so basically the Shenmue experience.

The monsters are flatout unfairly balanced and goes from being slightly unnerving to reliving the annoyance of playing Outlast 2; the Mimics (Or the Skinwalkers) are the biggest offenders in this aspect because the first sight of them goes "Oh that's a monster!" to "Welp, this stage is gonna suck"

The fact that the flashlights take up an inventory slot instead of just having it as a mandatory toggle doesn't enrich the experience, it's just annoying.

I get the idea of being in the Backrooms is supposed to be unnerving, feeling lost, and ill-equipped, but when looking at it from a game experience, it's not challenging or enjoyable, just bad.

With friends it's a magical experience, it's stupid fun with the most not scary monsters in existence that only are scary to grade schoolers.

My friends and I had a good time with it, and ended up beating it. We'd love to have a sandbox option to just explore the stages and look around without a shambling restart button gurgling towards us because there's a good chunk of stages that would be a joy to explore, and a Stage Select option to replay some of the floors would be great. The idea of having to restart a whole new run just to replay Level Fun+ left us saying "Nevermind, I need a break"

If you want to have fun playing a crusty horror game with friends then this game delivers.

This game reminds you that you're not playing Mario or Sonic, you're playing Bubsy, and that's okay!

Once you're over that mental hurdle and figuring out Bubsy's moveset the game goes from "Oh this is a neat little platformer" to "Okay this game is really fun!"

I'm not a speedrunner by any means, but once I figured out the controls I had a similar sensation as Penny's Big Breakaway where I kept trying to see how much of the stage is a suggestion rather than a requirement to traverse.

Give the demo a try. There is genuine heart and experience behind this game to give Bubsy a solid entry that could be the best game he's ever had.

Also Sean Chiplock as Bubsy is perfect, one of his pause menu one liners had me and my friends cracking up.
I can't wait for this game to come out.

Needs a "Play with my Cat" mechanic outside of "Pet", a Ragdoll/Ragamuffin pattern option, more silly hats and maybe even coats.

Was more scared of my cat dying of sadness than being murdered, but the idea of dying and worrying what'd happen to my cat was there too.
