This game is like a fever dream.

The first thing I did in the game was spawn in as a US infrantryman on some hill top base deep in surrounding jungle. Right off the bat the base was taking mortar and small arms fire. I bravely took cover inside a tent and found a radio there. It had some interactions, one of them was to call in reinforcements which seemed like a good idea to me. Said and done -- soon I hear the rising noise of rotor engines outside. I go outside and look up, only to barely catch a glimpse of a Chinook before it crashes into the tent I radioed from, spilling fire and men all around it.

The game runs horribly. It's buggy. It's ugly as hell (though there is certainly a charm to the simple graphics and I appreciate the work that has gone into it). The movement is clunky. Few things are explained at all. But there's already an incredible amount of content and I'm deeply interested in seeing where this might go. So I recommend buying it to support the dev so this madness can continue. I have high hopes for this project.

Bought this game on sale because I wanted a pvp-game that puts you right into the action without much fuss. Something where strategy doesn't matter too much and it's more about the tactics and combat. And that's pretty much what I expected and exactly what I got.

However, I also got a game with an incredible atmosphere and fantastic sound designs. The voice lines are just hilarious and so well-made and any fighter worth his salt will use them constantly. I expected the swordplay to be difficult and complex and it certainly is, but incredibly satisfying to learn and extremely fun when you manage to pull off a cool move.

It can be frustrating. Sometimes the teams are stacked on one side with veteran players and that will make your existence miserable. Sometimes you're on the stacked team and can relish in the blood of your foes. The chat is a toxic mess sometimes as is common with these types of games. But at least there's accessible features to mute the spammers.

For the sale price I think the game was incredibly well-worth it, as I've clocked 50 over barely a week (yikes).

Fresh meat... and vegetables!

I've had my eye on this game for a long time and honestly I've no idea why I waited so long. I've played a lot of roguelikes in my days and I already feel this is probably my favourite one. Character building and progression is really fun, and there are a lot of different ways to play and choices to make. Different weapons like swords and axes give you unique moves which really influences the way you play. Skillfully disarm your opponent with a long sword or just chop their arm off altogether with an axe. The crafting system is interesting and more importantly useful. While I usually find hunger-mechanics in roguelikes to be pretty boring, in Caves of Qud it's easy to manage and cooking stuff is actually fun (even if you lack the skill).

I could go on about the mechanics and how much I enoy them, but the atmosphere is what's really amazing. There's a sombre, melachonic feeling as you explore the ruined world. The excellent music also helps to stir this feeling in me. The lore sucks you in and I find myself constantly yearning for more tidbits about the history of the game world and what happened to it. Caverns of Qud resonate with mystery and imagination.

For any roguelike fan this is a must-buy, and I've you find the genre daunting this might be a good place to start.

Become one with Finnish nature as you violently murder every living thing you see. Spend weeks looking for a pair of socks but never find any, and lose your toes to frostbite come winter. Shoot an arrow and miss, and send it into orbit of the sun.
Trade your hard-earned furs for a masterwork tool and get waylaid by robbers on the way back. Keep strange mushrooms in your pocket to look at from time to time. But then accidentally eat one and die. Try to climb a tree until your whole body becomes one singular contusion. Forget where you saw the unforgettable grass. Finally finish your cabin, and start a new character. Trip balls. Bash a duck seventeen times in the skull with your club before it dies. Emerge from the tree line carrying 200 torches in your arms, to the amazement of all the Drikk children.

A great survival game with solid mechanics. The only thing that would make it even better would be more things to do. Sock-crafting, for example.

WARNING: This game is early access. There are a plethora of bugs, sometimes game-breaking and many of the intended features and mechanics are not yet in the game.

I choose to recommend it despite the above because I believe in the near future (hopefully) it will be a very interesting game. It already captures an atmosphere of a grim, near future where the player struggles to survive and keep their craft operational. You need to scavenge derelicts for resources to keep your various ship systems in working order, all the while trying to stay sane in the unforgiving and deadly void. In space, no one can hear you feel starved for intimacy.

But, if you do not want to be a guinea pig for bug-finding I recommend that you wait some time before picking up Ostranauts until a few more patches have rolled out.
