Great fun. The ability to build a team up through the ranks and expand upon it is great.

The visuals are excellent, and the feel of getting your pit, practice and Qualifying strategy right is incredibly rewarding!

There's hope for this and I will repurchase a little later on (if that means I pay more then so be it) to re-review, but for now it's got a few issues that stop me recommending it (wish Steam would add a middle ground option instead of the Yes/No because I feel the No is too harsh).

Lets start with the good;


* It runs smooth as butter.

* The game itself has excellent 'Pick up and Play' capability.

* The visual style is 'old/classic' but carries a great Arcade Charm.

* Controls seem intuitive on Controller.

* Wrestler Customisation (and Workshop compatibility by proxy) is incredible. The moveset customiser is light years ahead of anything anyone else has made.

* AI vs AI matches are genuinely fun to watch and setup.

* The total number of moves and the style of the wrestlers are outstanding.



The Bad:


* Strikes do not connect well. This is partly due to the angle of the camera mixed with the style of the sprites and ring design. Not sure how much this will improve, but even the AI in exhibition matches miss each other all the time.

* The lack of a 'Story Maker' or Feud system means that you're not able to add any meaningful weight to what you want to do. And the lack of a Card Builder for a series of shows that build to a PPV makes it feel a little hollow.

* The Belt Customisation is very lacking. Not sure if they plan to add Workshop support and allow full customisation here, but so far it's quite poor when compared to the ability to add to the belts. A lot of the front plates don't fit any of the straps at all.

* The Menu for adding Stables/Promotions is far too basic, and doesn't offer enough customisation for you to give it your own twist/design style.

* The method for adding Wrestlers to a promotion is a little fiddly/not clear.

* Online only supporting 4 players is a little disappointing. Having more in a lobby would be better so people can build match cards with larger groups and have people in and out. Would be nice if we could get 6 players in a match, but not a dealbreaker to stay at 4.

Suffers at the moment from poor direction. The game has an incredibly steep learning curve from the start. It also suffers from poor UI choices (such as how to assign staff to seating, or the oddly cumbersome HR screens).


UPDATE; Most gripes are now fixed. Yay.

Good:

* Very Pretty
* Pacing and Weight of character movement feels good
* Objective gametypes are cleverly done, and I think the modes are the best design feature in that sense.
* Interesting character designs and abilities
* Outstanding VO
* Cool Story
* Great cinematics

Neutral

* Having characters locked is an instant turn-off to me. I don't want to have to grind out a load of characters I don't like using to maybe unlock one that I also don't like and need to spend longer getting to one I do. They should all be available minute 1.
* Gear seems pretty much pointless, as it's a waste of Shards in almost every game mode.
* Matchmaking times leave something to be desired
* Reports of AMD card issues (though that hasn't happened to me).
* A lot of the abilities simply aren't worth using at times, so when you level up, it's annoying that you sometimes have to burn a point into choice a or b, when you would rather have a choice of just upgrading one ability instead. Might just be me on that, but something I've felt a few times.
* UI is a tad clunky (though that's classic Gearbox in that respect).
* Level Design is a tad dull with regards to map layout. The whole 'needing to use an ability to clear some walls' gets a bit tedious if you dare play as a tank or DPS character.
* The scoring system doesn't help with the whole "Don't encourage people to charge in and kill." As it doesn't reward people that play the objective or the character role truely (ie; Healers are made to look useless on the scoreboard mid-game).
* A LOT of quitters and AFK players. Which doesn't help at all.
* Mildly infuriating when the team you play with is obsessed with getting kills, leaving you 1 vs 3 on an objective and you either have to die trying to hold it or surrender it. Perhaps this is just a flaw with MOBA FPS coming to the mainstream. Could bode poorly for Overwatch too, though time will tell there.

Bad

* The character balancing has fallen well and truly short. Some characters are just not worth using and as soon as you get through the roster unlocks, they'll never get used again.
* You can already tell that in about 4 weeks time, this will not be a new player friendly game (I wasn't in the Beta, and I already get wooped a lot by people who clearly were, it's taken a lot of patience to keep at it).
* Some healers have too much health. And the rate at which they can heal is insane. Miko is probably the best character in the game because as a Healer, it can still get kills with relative ease, whilst keeping everyone alive and can take a fair few hits before needing to withdraw
* One Story mission is broken and too difficult for the masses (it took me a fair few attempts)
* After a while, you can see everyone abandoning the firearm users for Melee, as its so much easier to control and land hits with them, and they seem to close with almost no real risk to themselves in mid-close range.


However, if you are going to play it, I'd say do it now, as I can't see this outliving the upcoming competition, so get in whilst there's an active crowd. It might get spikes with DLC packs and Steam Sales, but I wouldn't expect to see much of a growth beyond the next 4 weeks.
