A truly special game, reminiscent of a lot of classic adventures while still managing to be its own unique experience. A genuine, heartfelt, bleakly honest love letter to a deeply damaged place, oozing mood and atmosphere from every pixel.

Huge and deep without being inaccessible to new players (like me) -- it helped a lot that I watched Many a True Nerd's play videos first though, since they show how to really have fun with it. The key is rolling with the punches and making a story as you go.
Suits lots of play styles, and lets you have complete control over the pace of gameplay.

This game is just an utter delight of storytelling and mystery-solving through exploration.

If you're like me, you may want to keep your own notes on lines of investigation as a supplement to what you keep in your ship's computer, because if you hop from one thing to another it's easy to accidentally forget about an important thread you were only 75% finished with. But that's just because I have ADHD and the game has a deceptive amount of depth; I wouldn't want it simplified in the slightest, it's excellent just the way it is.

This is a wonderful, beautiful game. It's relaxing to play, interesting and engaging to explore, and if you pay attention and read between the lines, you'll find there's a lot more to the story than it might first appear.

The gameplay is very effectively used as a way to engage you in the experience and draw you into the story; but it's worth knowing that there is one specific story being told here. The decisions you make can affect how much you learn about the story, but they won't really change the outcome. So don't get too hung up on decisions, just explore and follow your instincts and let yourself get absorbed in the game.

In spite of being early access, this is already the most fun I've ever had in a racing game. I'm also very pleased so far with the way the studio is handling the early access release: they have a clear road map of what they intend to do and when they intend to roll out new rallies and game modes (e.g. rallycross); they release weekly status updates; every Thursday they update the list of bugs they're working on; and they've repeatedly pledged not to try to start charging us for things they're adding to the game. It's also being developed for PC, so no worries about bad porting like certain other recent racing game releases.

As I write this, it has four rallies each with a bunch of stages, a great selection of cars, and good driving physics that make for a really fun and intense experience. The main area that stands out to me as needing work is collision physics -- snowbanks basically act like solid ramps, and sideways collisions into walls or hills don't seem to do half as much damage as I'd expect. Force feedback with a racing wheel also doesn't feel as realistic as it could be yet. And on very rare occasions, the codriver reads the wrong pace note for a particular corner, or reads it a bit later than I'd like (though if that's a big problem for you, you can configure how far ahead you want notes to be read in general).

All in all, for a game that's only on version 0.5, I'm extremely happy with DiRT Rally, and eager to see it improve and expand.

A truly excellent game. Very reminiscent of Portal, but with philosophy (primarily about personhood and the nature of cognition and consciousness) in place of the humor.
