This game consists entirely of "surprise" boss fights, in which you need a specifically built team, with no warning about what you will need ahead of time. Boss fights where the bosses move 5 times before your team, even with the fastest digimon in the game, this is only slightly mitigated. Oh, and did I mention that before every story boss there are long UNSKIPPABLE cutscenes?

This isn't a game, it's a test of patience, and after 80 hours, I lost.

Yakuza Kiwami is a great game that is a fantastic remake of the original Yakuza game. If you enjoyed Yakuza 0 and want more adventures in Kamurocho, this game will be sure to satisfy. If you are new to the Yakuza series, go buy and beat Yakuza 0 first, it really is the best starting entry in the series.

The graphics in Yakuza Kiwami feel more or less the same as Yakuza 0, with Kiwami feeling noticeably less bright and energetic in most places (probably due the the economic crash that occurred during the 10 year gap between the 2 games). I prefer the visuals in Yakuza 0.

The combat system revisions from Yakuza 0 feel like 3 steps forward, 1 step back. Kiryu feels much more responsive to control, and I found that the Rush style became my new favorite style, followed by Full-Power Dragon of Dojima. Due to the removal of some moves and combat AI changes, most styles (excluding Rush) lost some valuable moves and abilities. I found that Beast (my second favorite style for Kiryu in 0) felt rather lackluster on it's own, often coming short against even the weakest of mooks. However, the real measure of a style in Yakuza Kiwami was how useful it is to quick swap to and from, and with Beast having arguably the easiest to use and versatile Climax Move, It IS still useful. Becasue Majima is no longer playable, the game also lack my top 4 favorite styles from Yakuza 0, but that can't be helped.

The minigames in Yakuza Kiwami are mostly the same, with better karaoke and no giant minigame to unlock a 4th style.

Progression of abilities have been separated from money, instead having abilities be unlocked with with skill points, a net positive change overall. The progression of your 4th style has been changed to encounters with Majima via the newly implemented Majima Everywhere system (replacing the Mr. Shakedown system). This new system is awesome at first, hilarious the second time, but downright annoying the 50th time. I highly recommend spacing out your encounters with Majima to avoid burning out like I did.

TLDR: buy this game if you have already beaten Yakuza 0 and enjoyed it.
