I've been playing GFL2 since launch though not on steam so my hours don't reflect that. After all this time, I feel like the game struggles the most when it comes to story and gameplay balance. I'll just focus on the story aspect of the game for now.

The story narrative is confusing, especially for someone like me who is new to GFL as a whole. The game tends to throw unfamiliar terms around like "URNC" and "Rossartrism". Important missing contexts like the "Frankfurt" operation that the commander used to partake in before setting the events of GFL2, and new characters that appears that they know me but I, as a player, don't know much about them without proper re-introduction or recap. This has been my pain points when I initially started. Sure, I can research about GFL story and entire characters' background outside of the game with the help of my friend, Google, but that just means that the game failed to establish or re-establish the characters' motivation, relationships, and the world around them and instead relies on the player's pre-existing knowledge of the previous game which breaks immersion.

With regards to the substance of the story, I feel like there isn’t enough buildup or development. I don’t know why I should care about the Commander’s motivations or those of the people around them. The stakes for the Commander feel unclear, and their significance in the grand scheme of things is never made compelling.

I don’t feel the weight of the characters’ motivations, and their reunions and interactions feel flat, personally. From the dialogues, it seems that the Commander and their previous companions have formed deep-rooted bonds, but I don’t feel any of that, because I wasn’t there as a player from the very beginning. As a sequel, the story should be accessible to everyone, regardless of whether they’ve been along for the Commander’s journey from the start.

In the end, I’m left feeling like I’m missing the crucial context and connection that GFL1 provided. It’s particularly disappointing because GFL1 was so widely praised for its story, yet this sequel fails to make that same narrative depth accessible or compelling for a new player to the IP.

That said, I did enjoy some stories to some extent, like the Aphelion event and as of this writing, Intertwined Assault. But overall, the narrative is hard to follow, especially if you're unfamiliar with the game's lore. It feels disjointed, underexplained, and difficult to immerse in.

It's an interesting game that I'll probably keep playing for some time.
This game isn't for everyone. It has a learning curve that (in my opinion) is steep. Some in-game explanations/descriptions are vague, leaving me with a big question sometimes. Many of them require experimentation or research to grasp.

That said, overcoming those challenges is what makes it interesting to me. Whether it's setting up complex HVAC system or perhaps making your own custom airlock, each accomplishment is earned which makes it satisfying.

I hope they add more complex systems/items/mechanics to play around with.
