This is a hard review to write, but let me be clear, I am a fan of this game, and the wider genre.

In time if this game changes for the better I would happily change my mind on the review, but in its current state I do not recommend.

As someone that has just under 1200hrs gameplay on Space Marine 1, This game is something that I've been looking forward to for a very very long time. And whilst there are positives to this game, the negative aspects just make me not want to play it, there is no want or need for it to take up my gaming downtime.

Campaign.
Completed, It is very good, believable lore accurate, good to see it was the flagship part of the game. Absolutely stunning visuals no matter where you go. Only real downside is that its really short.

Operations mode.
Stunning visuals, gameplay is reasonable, though due to the connection issues it can be very frustrating. The AI bots could use some work for both the enemies and the team.

Eternal War.
This is a problem. This feels like it was more of an afterthought, the maps are boring and lacking the detail and love that the campaign receives.
The server and connection issues are very similar to those that plagued the original space marine. I can not stress enough that the stability needs to be present in a PvP game otherwise you just start to lose the player base.
There is very little balancing between the classes, and matchmaking seems non existent, but that may change with time.
The long term longevity of the PvP aspect of the game relies on having a slick responsive game, and this is not it. It feels clunky and delayed with actions. Whether that is intended as its cross platform idk. In other PvP games when I press a button or move the mouse you expect that response to be there instantly, this is severely lacking.

I do play on a Ultrawide screen and the latest patch has meant that the FoV is messed up, but even before that there was still issues. The game camera is faaar too close to the character on the screen that it can even block the view of mob stood literally right in front of you, and in PvP its not worth trying with this game mode. a FoV slider or alternate options needs to be implemented.

There are many other minor tweaks that need some attention and care, and may well get sorted in a future patch. A little transparency and acknowledgement from Focus would be great.

Back to Darktide I go to still serve the God Emperor

I'm a massive 40k fan and have been following and supporting this from the start, sold into the founder stuff and everything, however...

In its current form I can't actually see myself playing it much more, I genuinely hope that things change with it. I really really want to like this game, for me I was hoping for a tighter more stable version of Space Marine Multiplayer crossed with open world Planetside 2.

It doesn't feel responsive enough to be on par with similar fps games, feels far too clunky, I understand that this is still Alpha, but you get a feel for games even in the early stages of development whether this is going to be a slick, responsive system.

I know that for alot of people they probably won't care about this part, but it really doesn't have the Grim Dark feel to it, the level design is too blocky, to me it doesn't feel like a natural landscape, let alone battlefield of the 41st millenium. Sure there is Gothic style architecture, but it almost has a stylised comic book feel to it at present.

There are lots of things that just aren't quite right, but they still kind of have the potential to change, one thing that stands out to me though, (it will sound stupid)

When sprinting, why does it look like that they are comical knuckle dragging orangutans, with the bounding strides, with the legs so far apart when doing so.

But anyway, in its current form, I don't recommend, but really really want that to change - If they feel that it is well enough along to be given Early access, I hope they update frequently otherwise I fear the worst.

Whilst I can understand that alot of people are disappointed with the game for what it is, you get what you pay for - I would personally rather pay a full 40-50 pounds for a Top A-Title from the Games Workshop IP.

If you only pay around a fiver, you need to have certain expectations, sadly even despite expecting it to be a very very basic game, it was incredibly simple, extremely repetitive and you could determine whether you were going to complete the level within the first minute.

Having been through and completed all the campaign missions to 100%, there has yet to been an actual ending to the game. I also seem to have not been granted the single lone achievement for completion. All in all, it's not a very good game but it makes me appreciate the other games released under the IP, such as DOW and Space Marine.

It seems that Games Workshop is slowly becoming a cash cow, rather than the company with strict standards to protect it's trademark and intellectual property that we are used to.
