We know that10= undefined. But why? Let’s start with 10.01. We know that 10.01 = 100. If we go smaller and do 10.0001, the answer is 10,000. If we keep dividing 1 by values closer and closer to 0, the result tends towards positive infinity. So, does 10= ∞? Of course not. However, we can say that x0+1x=∞ (the ‘+’ exponent means ‘to approach from the positive direction’. You will learn more about this later). Remember, x01x=∞ does not mean that 10= ∞. Now, let’s try 1-0.01. The answer is -1000. Let’s try 1-0.0001, and, you guessed it, it equals -10,000. If we keep dividing 1 by values closer and closer to 0 from the negative direction, the result tends towards negative infinity. We can say that x0-1x=∞.

But there is a problem. The limit of the function1xas xapproaches 0 cannot both be - and +! So consequently, 10= undefined. A more simple proof is that let’s say 10=x. By laws of algebra, 1=0x,which leads to the false statement of 1=0.
