In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends. Last night, I experienced something new, an extra-ordinary game from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the game and its developers have challenged my preconceptions about indie gaming is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for simulator games motto: ‘Anything can be fun.’ But I realize, only now do I truly understand what they meant. Not everyone can become a great developer, but a great developer can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the geniuses behind PowerWash Simulator, who is, in this critic’s opinion, nothing less than the creators of the greatest game of all time. I will be returning to check for more DLC soon, hungry for more.

From the very start of human history, there was human conflict.
In it's barest form conflict simply comes down to a clash of philosophies,
and what greater experience has exemplified this than Paunch?

The concept of good and evil, heroes and villains, are done away completely in Paunch.
We begin to understand in the identical sumo men that we, too, are identical.
Regardless of the validity of either end of our bouts,
instead of resorting to words we revert to our most basic of primal instincts.
We settle this in stone, and thanks to the Empty Boulder Update that is done quite literally.

What Paunch provides to the world is a proving ground that strips away the tangle of diplomacy.
No clear rules of engagement, I'm still not sure what the win condition is,
but myself and some other deliriously bored individual
can take great pride in beating the dirt out of each other.
We both walk away with motion sickness and the stench of raw human emotion.

10/10 irl wars should be fought in Paunch instead
