Sprawl is an excellent boomer-esque FPS. The wall running/jumping/bullet-time felt fluid, the gun-play was fast-paced and fun, and the weapons (although a bit more to be desired) felt great to use.

The map design is well thought out and fits the need to constantly be on the move while dealing with hordes of enemies. It plays well with the movement style of wall running, crouch sliding, and high action battles. It's very fun to wall jump over an enemy, enter bullet-time, pop an enemies head off, and then land to then directly go into a slide as you again enter bullet-time and shoot a 'weak-point' rocket pack on the back of an enemy so that they explode. It's also nice that you can always keep your bullet-time meter stocked when you kill enemies by using their weak-point(s).

A great array of guns. You have your dual pistols, smgs, shotgun, gatling, rocket-launcher, ect... Although I do wish there was a bit more variety, maybe a second shotgun (with faster reloads), or a scoped rifle. I don't like how the gatling gun would slow your character's movement as it didn't feel in-place with the movement the game is expecting (This can be circumvented by jumping around or wall-running, but I don't want to feel immobile with basic WASD movement when I pull out a weapon). Due to the lack of a rifle-like gun, I found myself using the pistols for most non-heavy enemies.

Enemy AI could use some work. I often found myself cheesing some of the more tanky enemies (mechs) from a distance, or finding pathing bugs that would confuse an enemy NPC into walking back and forth as I shot it.

I prefer difficult games, but this game does not offer difficulty in an Easy/Normal/Hard fashion, but rather has 'difficulty sliders', in which you can change the values of the damage you take, you deal, and the depletion time of your bullet-time mode. I opted for 0.5x player damage dealt, and 2x (max) enemy damage dealt. I wanted to reduce my damage on enemies even more, but found that there's not a good way to keep your ammo in-stock by playing this way. The melee was next to useless and I only used it a few times to feel cool, I wish it had more utility.

The graphics were par for the genre, and I really enjoyed the "retro" mode filter they allow you to apply. Retro mode comes in 0x, 2x, 3x, and 4x options. Each of them adding more pixelation to make the game look like one of those classic shooters I remember from the 90's. I did find 3x/4x to be a bit "too much" for me, so I opted to play in 2x retro mode. The 0x also looks great if you want more of a crisp visual experience.

The music fit the theme, nothing that stands out too much, yet does a fine job encapsulating the overall feeling/theme of the game.

I have mixed feelings about the story. I found myself not really caring to read many of the codex logs that can be found scattered throughout the game. After a few levels in I would just skim through the codices to get a rough idea of what's "going on". Despite things not being very well-written, the writing for the voice acted parts was just fine and kept me interested in what was happening. The Voice acting itself was excellent too.

I'd definitely recommend this game for anyone who wants to have a good time with some solid game-play.

I played through the game as the Journalist character, I did not try the Priest.

The first half of the game was fun, but often lead to some repetitive moments and mixed feelings about the map design. Despite this, well worth going through it.

The second half of the game completely flipped my opinion. Wonderful map design, better enemy diversity, and an action filled experience. There is an excellent amount of unique enemies with synergetic abilities that will keep you on your toes.

The soundtrack is next to perfect, and the sound programming leaves little to be desired. Artwork is unique and captivating and enhances the experience of the Lovecraftian style universe.

The most impressive thing about this game, for me, was the boss design. I played this game on expert, because I enjoy having a challenge that forces me to understand the enemy movements and abilities in order to progress forward. This game delivered on that. The boss battles on expert were HARD, I had to meticulously pay attention to their move-set and think out a proper strategy. There was zero chance I would have been able to defeat them by simply run-and-gunning.

At times I wished I had extra movement options, such as a dash ability, but by the end of the game I felt the limited wasd/jump movements were a good fit for the challenges presented.

I do have mixed feelings on the abilities (Journalist). I often only found myself using the sword and time-slow abilities, with sparse use of the doll (aoe attack). I next to never used the photograph ability, it felt too-weak and often useless to even bother. This is an area where I feel the devs can improve.

The story is "there", I'm not too well versed in Lovecraftian lore for it to really have an effect on me, but it's never thrown in your face and doesn't get in the way of the gameplay. The atmosphere was definitely a win for me.

I would highly recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a fun boomer shooter.

Difficulty: 8/10 (Expert mode)
Graphics/ArtStyle: 9/10
Atmosphere: 9/10
Gunplay: 7/10
Enemies: 8/10
Soundtrack: 10/10
Map Design: 6/10 (first half) 9/10 (second half)
Overall: 8.5/10

I'll definitely be getting the sequel.

4+ hours into this game and I can say it's one of the most difficult games I have ever played.

I have spent every single second of playtime trying to defeat the first boss.

At first I couldn't get past his "black-screen" attack, but after I finally figured out a working strat I was able to progress into his daunting opening cinematic move. This wasn't easy, but I did end up 1-shotting it and have done so each subsequent attempt.

But oh oh oh, this is where the game really turns the knob to 11! There's a multi-phase server battle where you have to first get through a login attempt, this took me at least 2 hours, but the good news is that you seem to get a checkpoint after defeating it! I'm now stuck at the "Server is at capacity" phase and I think this may be the final phase. So far an hour of attempts, but I'm slowly grinding my skill and patiently observing the move-set.

I think I'll finally make it past the prologue soon!
