Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner's 2020, "Dragonball Durag", is a deeply layered commentary on the unique relationship between African-American and Japanese peoples, taking two cultural staples created by each community, 'the durag' and 'Dragonball', and creating a portmanteau-esque amalgamation of both objects to create a tragic hero, a beautiful monster, a true Shakespearean ballad. In this, he negates ideologies of racism and anti-hegemony, proving that two things starkly distant in culture can indeed create a co-existent beauty, the "Dragonball Durag". Some critics have observed this to be Bruner's magnum opus, being that in a single body of work, he has effectively captured everything that to this point, we have been led to believe, embodies "Thundercat". Lines such as "I'ma keep on all my chains, when I'm making love to you" are deeply metaphorical, Bruner refers to the sexual chains enclaved upon him by global Northern societal 'rules', in which things like 'hentai' and 'tentacle porn' are so-called, 'obscene art-forms'.
