Buenos nadadores, pueden moverse en tierra andando separando el cuerpo de tierra o arrastrando el cuerpo, mientras que las especies de menor tamaño incluso pueden galopar. Su piel es gruesa y está cubierta de escamas que no se superponen. Tienen dientes cónicos, tipo estaca, y una poderosa mordida. El corazón tiene cuatro cámaras y, de forma similar a las aves, un sistema de circulación de aire unidireccional en los pulmones, pero, al igual que otros reptiles, no aviares, son ectotermos.
