TL;DR: As of Beyond Light's release, there is nothing you can do for free in terms of actual story in the game. You can only visit planets, do some bounties and other random little quests like that until you decide to pay for DLCs.


As of Beyond Light, this is the state of the game for f2p players or anyone who wants to hop into the game and properly experience it before buying DLCs, at least from what I've figured out by recently playing it again and some Googling around.

I first played when Destiny launched as a f2p game. During that time, the state of the game was as follows, from my understanding. Destiny had about 2 years worth of content released at that point. Some or all of it was made free for players and called New Light. Along with the launch of New Light and Destiny going f2p, they released a new DLC Forsaken. After Forsaken, they released Shadowkeep and now most recently Beyond Light. F2p players could play all the old stuff and if they enjoyed and wanted to continue, they'd have to pay for the new DLCs. Totally understandable. With the release of Beyond Light however, all the old content that was part of New Light was vaulted meaning f2p players were left with nothing to play in terms of the actual storyline/campaigns. From Googling around, my understanding is you can do bounties, visit all the planets and other small random things like that in the game without paying. Basically, Destiny went from a paid game to f2p for a year back to being a paid game under the guise of a f2p game. It's really just a horrible demo allowing you to do some random little things in the game until you decide to actually pay.

So in short, if you are a f2p player or someone looking to try out the game, play some of the old story before deciding whether you like it or not and want to pay for DLCs, don't bother. There is nothing worth doing left in the game. Honestly, I was quite disappointed when I recently played again with some friends hoping to do some of the old storyline. When I played Destiny right when it went f2p, I was enjoying it quite a bit and all for free and was looking to continue my progress but now they've just done a bait and switch on players. Quite unfortunate, don't waste your time.
