Scholar is a super high skill cap character that has so much potential in every match. Undertaker is for cavemen that what something easy to play (although she is a bit of a glass cannon). Something for everyone!

New nightlords are interesting. Dreg is probably the most fair and challenging boss in the game, and it's always great to get him. Balancers are...fine? But the Everdark one is straight out of hell with a bad party. A bit mixed there.

The map is interesting. Just for it to be on it's own, I think it would be great. You have a lot of very dense areas with lots of bosses and POI without a lot of running around, besides getting the crystals. But the very existence of it makes running Evergaol in Depths a massive gamble. I understand wanting to combat the Evergaol meta, but they could have at least thrown 2-3 in there so people didn't get 0 value out of up to two relic lines.

At the end of the day, I'll eat anything they serve Nightreign flavored. I'm sad to see the Mostly Negative. I do hope they continue to add more expansions and content to the game. No arguments that we probably should have gotten some more weapons with the release of the DLC, but it's possibel they're concerned about diluting the weapon pool and how that may change the balance of the game. Will be itneresting to see what they do in the future.

So here me out on this. Brotato is absolutely my most favorite game of this genre. That might actually be part of the problem though. You see, with Brotato, every run is a challenge. The difficulty is tuned so tightly, that unless you get insanely lucky, you'll lose without a solid planned out build. Enemies move faster and faster, hit harder, and you have to scale faster to keep up. This can be done through either going full defense so you're almost immortal, full offense so nothing gets close to you, and rarely, some mix of the two. Optimizing in Brotato is great, and it's the one game of the genre that feels like a great puzzle to be solved, where your mechanical abilities matter.

So here is Noobs are Coming. It very proudly wears the homage to Brotato on its sleeve. So much so, that you can now buy this and Brotato in a bundle! Now to say something nice, the game does a lot of very interesting things with the weapons. Kickables, jumping, and minions are all fun ways to give the player way more skill expression in a game like this. The problem with skill expression though, is if there's no challenge...what's the point? I've cleared every single run the first time up through difficulty 4. I did die once by picking the objectively worse weapon on the kicking guy, but other than that, have had no issue with any of the minions or bosses.

I think the creator could turn it around. Go back to Brotato and observe the amount of cross screen shots and high threat enemies that spawn in the map. Re-evaluate how much currency the player is getting to limit how strong they can get early on.

I want to like the game. The bosses are cute and some of the weapon mechanics are clever. But there's just not enough challenge there for a genre that's several years old now.

Edit: Just updating my review. I did play difficulty 5. If the developer reads this comment, I think this would a great start for difficulty 1. Enemies are more aggressive and the amount of damage they deal makes you actually care about positioning. I wish you the best on the game!

A very fun game. Not entirely sure why there were so many complaints about the difficulty? I beat the game 5-6 times consecutively. Yes, as you unlock more items, I'm sure the item pool gets harder to target farm your build. But the game gives you so many chests and merchants that you'd really have to go out of your way to not put something together. Time is your most valuable resource, don't waste time on points of interest that are unlikely to help. Also know that you can fight bosses early if you're ready and have the bag space. You should be able to do the back of napkin math on if you'll win or not based on your own stats and the preview of the boss.

Only complaint is two maps seems a little...light? I know game design doesn't come easy or cheap, and I guess the game is still in early access.

Nightreign gives me all the great feelings of an almost lost era. Taken on it's own terms (no, it's not binding of isaac. no, it's not monster hunter. yes, there's only one map and 8 nightlords), it's a great foundation that I'm so excited to see the future for. The challenge of finishing a night, be it solo or in a group of randoms is amazing. The feeling of clearing and dominating a run with friends who know what they're doing is satisfying as well. The odds of rolling the "perfect" relic continue to make it compelling to run even after the platinum.

To address the other concerns: No, the days are not too short (you need to be more efficient). No, the Nightlords don't have too much life (phase 2 is usually way harder so maybe use your consumables there). No, not all the characters are balanced (It makes winning as them more rewarding).

Buy the game it's $40.

Edited 6/6/2025:
This is a tough edit to make. On launch and in the review period, there was a lot to look forward to in Wilds. A large new cast, a big rework of weapons, and careful detail to make a decent story was appreciated (Nata is fine until his ass gets stapled to a tree trunk).
Three months later, the seams have started to show. Firstly, namely, and most importantly, is the performance. I am running a near NASA computer with a 7800x3D and a 5070 Ti. Bougie I know, but you’d expect Wilds to at least run “well”. Instead, it is a common concern when playing or streaming if it will at least “run”. I gave Capcom some benefit the doubt, considering the game probably was pushed up for release, and designed for the PS5 spec. But not even Dragons Dogma 2 in Vernworth ever ran as badly as Wilds runs at its best. For a game that pioneered making combat and exploration feel smooth at 30 FPS on a PSP screen, it is equal parts sad and embarrassing that the title that could have made Monster Hunter and even bigger than World runs this poorly. Never before would I have thought a release in a franchise could retroactively make previous games feel worse by association. I should have known better after Monster Hunter Rise.
As for the actual content in game, this too feels like it could have used a bit more time in the oven. Allow me to explain. Decorations are easily completed within 100 hours. Any weapon you may want that is not Artian can have the target rare material farmed on demand. All you have are the Artian slop weapons which are ugly stat sticks. I am too old to play a game fighting for an ugly stat stick (I am 40 years). Also I am a Capcom stockholder, so it me pains to post this review. I would have been fully retired except for these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Artian weapons. How this game has still sold so many copies is almost baffling outside of people still buying on console. I weep for anyone playing this on any graphics card older than a 4070. You deserve better.
The bones may be there. Focus mode should probably be made less powerful, but I think that’s off the table. My feeling is we will need a full reset with Master Rank. I believe they will stick the landing there, but man, if they can’t get this running at 60 FPS on a Switch 2, it may as well not exist. I was a full time content clown for Monster Hunter, but being unable to know if my entire computer will hard lock and crash while launching the game has changed that. I will explore open job listings soon. Walmart greeter would be better than streaming Monster Hunter Milds.

Old Review: It's a great game. I will update this review when I can give more details in the future. As is, it is an evolution over both World and Rise. Performance improvements have been rapid. As soon as GPUs sell for retail, we are gaming.

The best bullet heaven out there. At max difficulty, each round is a test in your ability to scale your guy up. Even then, you need an extreme amount of concentration to finish at the highest difficulty for all of them. If you even have passing interest in this style of game, then you have to buy it.

Disclosure: I was sponsored to play the game and am an actual Capcom stockholder. That said, this is my real opinion, and I wasn't sponsored to write this review.

Only 8 hours but enough to say this isn't so much Dragon's Dogma II so much as "big" Dragon's Dogma or the "real" Dragon's Dogma. If you've played the original and loved it, know that you will love this one. A small downside almost 10 hours is in yeah, you're going to be fighting a lot of the same enemies (albeit you and they have some new moves). Just don't expect there to be brand new encounters every new location where you're fighting not goblin/wolves/bandits/saurians, because you're going to fight them a bunch.

If you *HAVEN'T* played Dragon's Dogma 1, and this is a fresh experience for you, you're going to have a lot of fun. Pawns, your AI companions, are just straight off the bat good and capable this time. Your attacks themselves all have great feedback and comboing feels fun with mixing different moves together.

There are some downsides. This is the first...real?...current/next generation game. It's getting 30 fps on PS5/XSX on average, so you can expect any not newer PC will struggle to maintain the same at 30 FPS, and may need to keep settings low on things like Raytracing/Shadows/Etc. Much like the original, I expect for it to get more popular over the years simply because a lot of people just won't be able to run it.

There's no new game selection? There's already save managers coming out, look for one of those.

Denuvo is in it, it sucks, but I just expect it nowaways.

Paid DLC is in it, but it's a single player experience. It's all optional or can more or less be bought in the game itself. If it bothers you enough to want it, I'm sure there's going to be a mod/cheatengine config to slurp up all that stuff as much as you want if you care that much.

2024 is going to be a bleak year. DD is the sort of game that encourages multiple playthroughs. You'll enjoy it for a long time.

Wow, there sure are a lot of negative reviews out there on this game right now (soon after launch, 4/17/23). I've enjoyed my time with the game so far, so I'd like to give some thoughts.

Deckbuiders are some of my favorite board/card games, and I've been an avid Slay the Spire & Monster Train fan for about five years now. I can't claim to be the best ever at them, but I can appreciate synergies/engines/scaling/etc. In that regard, there have been some reviews saying WIldfrost leans more towards Monster Train than Slay the Spire. Rather than being a true deckbuilder, it really is much of a "unit builder" that pushes you towards finding whatever components you can to scale something strong enough to keep up with the enemy.

There are some interesting mechanics here. You have six spots for your units, with enemies generally getting an option to attack first, meaning you'll almost always want an option to mitigate damage. Cycling your units through your deck works well enough to recover a small amount of HP, but should generally be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Snow is a very neat mechanic that delays enemies (with some having resistance), allowing for you to set up favorable trades or just straight up outrace the enemy towards dealing damage. Outside of that, you'll find plenty of familiar enough mechanics if you're a fan of the genre that there's no need to list all of them in exhaustive detail.

So the main thing that people are complaining about is the difficulty. And it's true, from your very first run, the game is hard. As it should be! You're learning multiple new mechanics, multiple new encounters, multiple new bosses. All the while you're unlocking new tribes/units/fcharms/pets/etc. There's a lot to take in, and there's just no easy way to get through your first couple runs without just checking your ego, and trying to understand where the run went wrong. As soon as I understood that I should be playing the game more like a Monster Train with a few giga powerful cards/synnergies, I started to win consistently. Just earlier I finished the 3rd consecutive win, out of 4-5 wins total. This was all within the first 24 hours of buying the game. So it's definitely not too tough. In fact, I'm curious to find out how deep the Bell system goes for difficulty, as I could see max unlocked saves having an almost 100% completion rate on clearing the game. Of course, assuming, you're willing to pick the most broken starting hero and not just choose the tribe you like.

So yeah, if you're looking for another amazing roguelike that is as graphically polished as it is challenging as you sink your teeth into its mechanics, check out Wildfrost. It's a great time!

So hopefully by the time you play this far in the future, this review will be less relevant. I say that because in the 14 hours it took to clear the game the first time (hard), I encountered many bugs. Twitch integration breaking, my villagers getting stuck on things requiring a reset to the main menu, enemy BOSSES getting stuck in a loop requiring resets. Truth be told, the game about a month after release is still filled with bugs.

That being said, the gameplay loop is fun. Unlocking new things is fun in any game, and you get a regular drip feed of thing in cult of the lamb. Combat is pretty simple, but difficult enough to still be engaging. The tarot card system doesn't really offer difficult choices often (50% more damage vs...immunity to poison???), but you can still do things to make your build work out in a certain way.

I haven't done really any post-game content, and for now, I'm ok with that. I enjoyed playing the game with my community, and clearing it. I can't ask for more of that, as the fun of it definintely outweighed the bugs. I'm sure the game will be even more amazing with another six months of polish and a little content update!

I'd love to fully recommend this game, and I think the game will "eventually" get to the point where I'd recommend it. Let's start with what I liked.

Playing this with a friend is a decent way to spend 10 hours. Figuring out all the different ways to optimize your raft, and splitting up duties is a great time. You're constantly managing a lot of your resources and health early on, and you really feel a huge punch upwards every time you creep up the tech tree and get a new item. The general method of resource collection is a little funny, but I won't complain too much, as it does make sure you never run out of something you need.

Now for the bad. The worst part is that while the game gives you a ton of tools to make your raft more efficient, we never experienced anything that made the game harder. Yeah sure, the Shark keeps coming back, but we have great weapons to fight him off, and extra layers of wood for him to eat if we can't be bothered. Events like multiple sharks, or literally any other enemy group coming after us would be great.

Now for the really bad part. Many of you may have played this game and had a different experience. For us, we made it all the way to the last part of chapter 1, and no enemies/animals spawned on the final island. The entire time we were finding various objects and resources that appeared to serve no use whatsoever. This culminated with a final note saying something to the effect of "HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE GAME LIKE US ON FACEBOOK". I get it, it's an indie game, and early access. But wow, uh, maybe check to see if your final island is actually spawning encounters to provide some challenge to the end game. Or really spawning animals at all, I don't know, there was a ton of stuff I think was supposed to show up and never did.

1-2 years from now, I think this could really be something great. As is...wait until at least Chapter 2 comes out. I may update my review then, but either way, it's not like I can undo the progress of more or less ice skating through the last bit of content in chapter 1.
