There are WIPES
wipes in games are fine but the fact the game is so grindy and the grind itself is unfun speaks volume into how much I wouldn't like to play the game again if there are wipes

The game is currently a grind fest of linear progression to be able to grind more, combat is basic and doesn't have any uniqueness, and there's no end goal other than a meaningless grind.

In a typical mmo I would want to reach max level, do high end raid content with unique gimmicks and fun mechanics, However, here there is nothing, its gear progression to be ALLOWED to mine higher end stuff and continue the grind all over again. In standard mmo's there are less fun parts to really reach the meat of why you're there but usually in those parts you're enjoying it. Here there is no meat and there is no fun in the grind.

Literally another top review (currently as of writing this is the highest), is a positive one saying:

"A good game for people who need to always be playing at least 2 games simultaneously."

A game shouldn't strive to be only okay or good when played alongside another game at the same time. This speaks volumes.

I wish steam had a mixed review score
Is how I'd best describe Balatro

Balatro is a fun game since it uses the framework of a time tested card game but now with rouge-like elements and a few changes. The addictive nature of "just one more run" with the frame work of a card game disguised as an increasing numbers game is why it keeps you hooked till the hours fly by. I understand and agree that a lot of people with have little to no issue with this game and simply enjoy it and eventually put it down, however, for me personally I dont like to set down a game till I either throw in the towel or I reach the goal I set out to do, then almost never revisit the game again. This paired with its addictive mechanics is a frightening. I find that beating the hardest difficulty of Balatro and in turn unlocking all the decks is the way to 'beat' Balatro at least for now. With that goal in mind I unlocked and won once on all the basic decks and decided the checkered deck would be my chosen deck to reach the final difficulty. As annoying as it is I understand why you cant share the progress of your highest difficulty level between decks but I still dislike it, maybe make it so you dont get the marker unless you beat it in order or something. But now we go into the problems:

As others have said, the difficulty is with the luck and path of the run. Its a measure of skill to minimize luck in games which focus on technical skill and practice but when the whole game is built upon no technical skill but how things interact to reach those higher scores it then becomes a race of how to reach one of those win conditions which is ultimately not on getting one item but instead multiple ones which makes it all the harder to do so.

To put in comparison in Enter the Gungeon, having higher luck means you can have better guns so your run is easier but not guaranteed, Balatro works similarly to this but its much harder to fail unless your deck isn't optimized because even with good cards some of these win conditions rely on luck even though its minimized. However, in Enter the Gungeon you dont need to open any chests or obtain other items in order to win a run, Balatro on the other hand, doesn't work like this. In Balatro you need multipliers and you need cash generation. If you don't randomly stumble upon decent ones then your run if effectively over. The higher difficulties I encountered exacerbate this problem and if your run isn't near perfect at the start then its best to restart.

Then even if you get a proper run going , either comically bad luck or your boss blind's ability may completely counter your deck making you restart. This is a problem with its limited design due to using the framework of poker. To make it difficult you need punish the player somehow and so some of those ways that are done are to shut down some avenues of your playstyle. This itself isn't that bad but due to how RNG dependent the game is can make many matches feel infuriating. The limit of how best to improve in balatro is understanding the basics of how deck building works, joker combination, effective money management and generation, joker order, and playing poker with the odds in mind. Anything beyond that is calculating the chance of obtaining certain jokers or how to better delay your run to allow certain effects or cards to be better scaled.

This is why I don't recommend Balatro for everyone. That endless tedium and slog to complete higher difficulties while trying to play the game blind with its addictive nature is what I worry some will go through and so only recommend if you'll enjoy it for a bit and not touch it in a while.

Horrendous monetization that you will need to go to their website to know the rates of drops and additional vital information they don't list. Their lootboxes have a 1% chance for epic, .48% for legendary, .1335% for mythic, AND a .0105% chance for Hyper rarity. However, there is a snip bit only mentioned in the website hidden between the discussion between different lootbox types. Every box has a max rarity cap so standard hits rare at max, big box can go up to legendary, and the mega box can go to hyper BUT Hyper is only available when you have 20 animals unlocked. So even when you're buying the lootboxs for an abysmal chance at these animals its literally impossible to roll for them and you're never warned. to put in perspective how common place the rates are for other things they are: 42% chance for experience and 42% chance for coins. However, there is a hidden pity counter included. If you speed 5 boxes you can get a common or rare pet. 10 of either big or mega boxes you get their respective rarities. However, to get a Hyper you need 200 BOXES to get one. The gameplay used to be fun when it first released but here can see its a cashgrab for the new rarities:

Game is super P2W but as most idle games the formula is addictive and interesting for a bit. I would be fine if it was all obtainable with game time but YOU'RE CAPPED AT 4 HOURS OF AFK AND YOU NEED TO SPEND TO REMOVE THAT . The game will flood you with so many bad deals and ads for money purchases to an absurd extent with no way to remove them. Increasing game speed requires money, you get insane buffs for money only, and although the character designs look pleasing they're the only good part of the game. Games with P2W mobile practices shouldn't be on steam.

I've 'beaten' as much as I had to finish the rewards for idleon, however, unless greatly enhanced to the point of being a new game I won't consider willingly playing for casual fun. The game in terms of updates keeps moving forward but never looks back at old outdated content and not fun design choices. I payed around ~20 bucks on the game and for the amount of content in it I find it fair but it feels forced to invest money to quickly go through the very bad and tedious grind. There is even content or insane boosts only access-able for real money. If you want a fun casual idle game then play the game but the moment you dislike the forced online aspect for the early game or somewhere along the line the repetition then stop.

There is so many issues and tedious aspects of this game with the possibility of the save or the time advancement mechanic you can buy with gems or get for free making you lose several hours of real progress. Idleon is much better imo and it hurts to see this game have potential but so many problems bog it down.

I'll list some of my problems below and hopefully they'll get addressed:
-Manually going between zones is annoying and ruins the early game progression

-Why is so many important items in the game locked in the gem shop as well as QoL; in Idleon you're not instantly thrust with all options but you progressively unlock them over a long amount of time. For example in excavation the construction side of things have several upgrades to improve the gem shop builder significantly specifically. Why?! There's also the unfair double mastery points from a paid pack as well as being forced to use money only to buy upgrades in the new update to improve your progress.

-Time-gating. Time gating isn't that bad in most games but this game has plenty in an extreme fashion. Its an Idle game but that's used as a shield for real problems the game has. There are so many active and tedious elements like hatchery, trecking, eventually excavation, world fight progress, multiple bosses, upgrading, and I can go on. When construction can take more than 30 days to upgrade something you know its stupid. Besides there are so many things where you lose out on progress even though its an idle game because it has no auto progress. Trekking will only do 1 zone at a time so why can I oneshot the enemies and clear it quickly but I'll lose so much afk gains on something I just unlocked. Its even worse yet when auto advance as a mechanic for the early game is locked out from you so you have to manually do the tedious waiting game of having to see enemy is dead and now I press the right button to not waste time.

-There is so much functions without a hold to buy option where you need to press 100's of times on 1 thing to upgrade something you have more than enough for and then you realize you have 10 more of those to do.

I can go in so much more depth but I want to enjoy the game since people don't create things to make them unenjoyable. Everything has passion or limitations but this is blatant disregard of QoL changes that are needed as well as a clear scope of vision and play-testing. There is a reason why mobile games are frowned upon on steam because they treat mobile games as easily portable but not scale the time availability of pc and mobile players. I'm free to hear other people's thoughts but for the foreseeable future I'll stick with idleon.

Cult of the Lamb is a tedious short management sim with a very bare bones rouge-lite sown on

Keep in mind I played this game 100% blind in the hardest difficulty up to the 3rd final boss and I can say the difficulty is just bigger healthbars and you having a smaller one after comparing the other difficulty settings

I really wanted to enjoy Cult of the Lamb but many aspects are very very questionable. The rougelite elements present are just the worst parts of rouglites that people don't enjoy cranked up to be worse. You start off with 2 weapon (one spell and one weapon) that you can't reroll so if you dislike your weapon choice it sucks to be you since depending the pathing you take its unlikely you find the weapon type you enjoy. There are also many other core problems so I'll list them off with bullet points:

Other core problems
  • In other games having the ability to reveal the map is super OP and useful, however, this game almost never has branching paths and even then they're not big or not serve a purpose so this upgrade is useless and makes randomized dungeon runs useless since you'll always be heading the correct way even late game

  • There is MANY and I mean MANY tedious tasks in the game. You have someone revolting? Send them to prison and every day preach to them. You have new followers? You have to go through the animation over and over when you can't even reject them coming in or alter their stats. In a hard difficulty so you want to min max damage? Just daily make everyone preach to you and hopefully not get bored. Want to feed your guys so they don't die? Just build a farm plot, plant the seed, water the seed, wait and then have to pick it up (which is the longest part). There's so much grind that muddies the experience and I never found anything satisfying since it was constantly between the thought of "And now I have to do _". The game also forces you (besides one) to head to a new area hours in when you unlock an optional zone every time. You can't ignore it and progress the rougelite you HAVE to go there. Worse yet your followers can die (which is fine don't get me wrong) but the game constantly forces you to upkeep an amount to unlock new zones so if you're slightly behind you have to re-tread old content to get more workers. Also your buildings can break by overuse such as beds and mines so have fun repairing them every time for no reason as well as go to build menu and remake the mines instead of it being able to be repaired. Also in addition you have to manually cook every time when your villagers are hungry (didn't mind too much as I played it was just getting the berries and food to feed them was a pain) and if you want your villagers to actually do the farming for you then you have to wait till the literal last stages of the game. These things add nothing to the experience but hurt it I don't know why.

  • Unlocking upgrades hurt you since they're not interesting at all. More move speed and etc doesn't make a good rougelite unless its supposed to be a filler bad item. There is no interesting things that change your game besides the fleece. Those are a pain to unlock and I got my first one before the first boss since I was going specifically for it since it made me take double damage (remember I was in the highest difficulty so with the fleece I die in 2 hits from anything) and allow me to stack damage by not getting hit. (Most fun aspect in the game imo since I have 475% damage percentile while fighting the 2nd core boss of the game without getting him, I had a high stack number since difficulty doesn't increase the difficulty just their health and lowering yours so even with all that % it took a while). I could have probably beat the whole game in about half the time if I was in an easier difficulty a wasn't doing the other side quests and minigames which imo is not worth 25$.

  • The final boss is predictable <- (not saying the boss just an adjective) and the ending is lame since its very sudden and brief it just left off at nothing with no conclusion and you can't even talk with the fox tutorial guy afterwards

  • Why is there a 5$ dlc for villager skins (not a big complaint but why lock content away when the game is so bare bones)

  • The map will be against you. There are things that don't block bullets and will phase through when it seems like they'll collide, enemies will be obscured by being close to the camera or behind terrain at times making you unable to know they'll dash across the map to hit you, and some bosses are laughably easy in their place in the game. The 4th core boss (just saying which numbered boss) was way easier than any before it.

  • Controls are wonky for pc keyboards to a great extent when trying magic but will be fixed soon probably so not too bad

Overall the game was very overhyped and hopefully they fix these complaints but I severely doubt they'll be able to fix the game's length at all. I really wanted to enjoy it but the balance, tediousness, difficulty, and length hold it back a lot.

Feel free to give me your thoughts below

Fall guys is a game about chance trying to pass off as a game where skill is the winning factor
The game heavily relies more on RNG and outside factors than user input

Upon the game's release the most popular finales (matches at the end to decide a victor) the MOST liked ones were the ones with the least RNG and player choice. These games included hexa-gone and jump showdown. These were matches of skill and you only had yourself to blame if you lost.

BUT...

Since the game's release we've had rampant game deciding bugs and hacking for a long time. It took way too long for the hacking issue to be sorted in a game this popular but worse yet 'major' content drops will only be coming at the end of the season. We still have several of the terrible bugs still in play, names are still disabled since there was no safeguard in altering the name's color & size, and the servers keep exploding. If you were to fix all these issues then it'd be playable but there have been dumb changes or accidental problems that make the game take away control from the player's hand like some jump inputs not registering and randomly falling for no reason.

There has been time to fix the game and make monumental differences but after the devs trying to address the problems by responding to them then purposefully ignoring the biggest problems it makes it clear that before adding more ongoing constant content it'll take them ages to address the groundbreaking issues.

Don't believe me?
In season 2 after a long season we got:
-A new PAID dlc for 5 dollars
-4 new maps
-Random graphical changes that make the map worse for the colorblind and seems to be viewed as worse than the originals
-A new mode sort of

The new mode focuses on removing the thing people ask since day one. Team modes. This was my favorite part of the update but was quickly ruined by the most questionable choice. They made one of the most RNG and disliked finales the main finale to appear . This has been brought up over and over again but why not make it the mode people like most or even have all of them have the same chance?

I could go on and on with this but although it seems good the devs here are out for money and have little care for the experience. I was taken aback when I noticed the most interesting and worked on skins showcased in their videos would be dlc only. I've won 12 matches and at least each finale once and as others said it gets STALE FAST especially when you've won them all. Their content and inability to address the bugs and stay clear with the community in the subjects/problems that matter in a timely fashion is going to lose a lot of players over time.

One Step From Eden

One Step From Eden is a game focused on its steep difficulty and its fast paced action. There are a numerous amount of spells you get over time, such as how 'Enter the Gungeon' and 'Wizard of Legend' does it. Progression took me the hours above to unlock every current spell and go into this game blind (17.2 hours). I've had experience with games like this so my playtime would be a tad faster unless you find a godly combination to beat the game much faster.

Pro's
  • The combat is fast paced and well designed
  • The option to spare and kill in any boss fight is good since it gives more options for gameplay and ending wise
  • A lot of spells have good variety and their own sections
  • A very difficult game if you're looking for something hard
  • Co-op and pvp options
  • A lot of unique enemies that have harder forms as it goes on
  • Freedom to shape the run immensely
  • Additional gamemodes after beating the game
  • Unique gimmicks behind every boss
  • A very vocal and responsive dev(s) (Youtube, steam fourms, and even right here in the reviews)
  • Very NOICE soundtrack but an addition to let specific songs loop would be nice
  • Mod support for infinite content as the game goes on
  • Character options are immensely different and have unique playstyles
  • Very little to no bugs in my playthrough

Con's
  • Difficulty is in some spots very unbalanced
  • Many endgame sections have one hit kill moves that have to be avoided via very situational manners that ruin the experience
  • Character balance is a big issue if you're attempting to go endgame without a cheese build Buff Shiso
  • Many complain about too fast paced action and thus not being able to keep up, if you have a short temper and drop games fast then don't play this game
  • Many effects must be assumed by the player early since 'flow' only effects some cards so playing the game blind won't help you at all learn how some specific effects work until many hours in
  • Beating the game requires a lot of skill and RNG since it'll decide how your build will turn out. Upgrading cards give you a select-able list of options but wasting precious upgrade points for a bad effect is very unfair since a lot of cards aren't endgame

T:;DR
Buy if you like this type of game genre and know full well its difficult. Feel free to try this build in case you get too mad and want a build to help you finish the endgame since... the angel one shoting you after the wall is a very bad end since (1) beating the wall is insanely difficult (2) Not a single way out without either a very small portion of the game's items would let you live (3) WAY harder and longer than other bosses while compared to the wall without a revive.

Message to the dev
All in all, I like this game a lot and it was great to binge the content. I know you are paying great attention to everyone's thoughts and I hope you keep working on the game. also buff Shiso & add online play :P

This will be a fair review and overview of the content here

TL;DR
The game has a free trial mode to test out the DLC once a day. Its very well priced overall and IMO provides double the content of the base game without making the base game feel cheated on. Its worth a buy to support the Devs and the community they've grown but again its optional to buy this. My recommendation is if you like the main game buy it, if you want something more complex and harder than the base game then buy it, if you want to get a DLC that will give you more enjoyment that most modern AAA companies then BUY IT

Contents:
  • Several unique and cool roles
  • A new map with unique mechanics (no reused assets)
  • Unique cosmetics
  • 2 new in game events
  • New items
  • A new and original twist to the traitors to make things fresh and new

The Good
  • Optional and daily free trials
  • Very good pricing
  • New Unique map with a lot of care put into it
  • New items Flashbang, torch, crossbow repeater, and much more
  • A ton of unique roles which change up the gameplay a lot
  • Very minor bugs and a helpful discord
  • Exclusive DLC crate that has alterations of popular skins

The Bad
  • There are major balancing issues between roles and objective types
  • The best way to prevent conversions is to kill each other instead of letting the problem grow. So you either kill off a hunch or lose at a very alarming rate.
  • New players will have a hard transition between modes if they don't know vanilla game mechanics

Verdict
One of the best DLC I've ever played and it switched up the game's formula rather well. This mode has been in development for a while and show very little fault which will be improved on later. I enjoy the change of pace and this is a MUST buy. However.... NERF THE BEARTRAPS ALREADY(/s)

Don't let the reviews deter you. This is a great game and I plan on doing the review it deserves, if you want a quick run down I'll make a TL;DR in the end.

To start off with the match's progression it usually goes in a linear path:
-Spawn in and see your role
-Investigate what the first objective requires
-Either take the risk path and open bunker or gather resources which will be significantly safer and easier to manage
-Repair the objective
-Find the next objective
-Repair that
-Then escape

However, since the traitors don't feel like losing they alter the game's rhythm rather significantly.

  • Trying to finish the 2nd objective with almost everyone with you? = 1st objective sabotaged
  • Going out alone? = They'll track your trail down and wait to kill you

...... The list goes on

The point is every Traitor has many methods on controlling the game's flow. They are easily outnumbered but can quickly gain the upper hand if they kill off too many. The survivors are just the chess pieces being played by the Traitors.

Now here is a list of other cool facts of the game:
  • The devs are very active on the discord and enjoy to any form of constructive criticism
  • The game is updates every 2 weeks with substantial changes to a lot of aspects
  • The game has an item store for special cosmetics and the in game cosmetics are fun and easy to obtain
  • The community isn't huge so everyone that plays it is super kind
  • We got an inclusive roadmap shortly after the game's release
  • Most bugs are very minor and do not ruin the game
  • Gameplay is very solid and all items are pretty balanced (except the stupid bear trap)
  • No locked content
  • Lag is not an issue and does not prevent a fun experience

These are all the aspects of an amazing game. But why the mixed reviews?
The player count, reviews, steam, and poor advertising

People's complaints of the game are very deserved but some are completely out of the game's control.

For starters people ramble on why no pack bundles are on steam for a lower cost.
The reason is.... Steam does not support it anymore. All the current pack bundles were grandfathered in.

The player count is low!
Well yeah, there are still a lot of people playing but you have to be in specific times like the weekdays. Not everyone is playing 24/7.

The Final Score
Community 8.5/10
Gameplay 9/10
Progression 8/10
Learning Curve 10/10
Effort 10/10
Communication/Transparency 10/10

An amazing game and way worth the amount I payed for.

tl;dr
Good mechanics and hard working devs with an awesome community. Everyone is welcoming and excited for new players to join the fun. Well worth the money.
