Swelter is a great mod, somewhere between the first and second Entropy: Zero great. Set seven years into the Combine occupation of Earth somewhere in Kazakhstan (not much deliberation there, the logo of the mod is literally the 32 rayed sun of the Kazakh flag), you take the role of a lambda resistance operative with mild brain damage and a deathly fear of antlions.

Like anything else, Swelter has its ups and downs. I'll start with the downs.

-Combat is not great. Enemies feel extra tanky and weapon handling in general is somewhat slow. Weapon models and sounds are pretty good though.
-The voice acting is above average for a Half-Life 2 mod. Definitely not a high bar, though.
-There's a couple moments where a whole group of NPCs will kinda just stop in place in their idle stand animation like they were freshly placed from the GMod spawnmenu and wait for you to finish a puzzle. Minor gripe, but it just feels a bit goofy.

Now for the ups!

-The music is PHENOMENAL. It's kinda like if you put the Half Life 2 soundtrack, the Noita soundrack, and a Kobyz in a blender, it just tastes less like leather and CDs, and it sounds less like horrible crunching and snapping and more like the best HL2 mod soundtrack ever. I seriously can't praise it enough.
-Generally visually appealing. This mod's levels are just well put together and aesthetically pleasing. Not much more to it. You can see the screenshots!
-The story is quite interesting, and an Earth this early into occupation just isn't something you see very often. I think it's handled quite well, actually; the Combine seem to be all around less invasive and oppressive than seen in Half-Life 2 and Alyx. I think this makes sense, as the Combine are only really interested in preventing humans from interfering with resource extraction. They would probably just model their occupation government after the existing states of Earth and tighten their grip over time as they get a more involved understanding of human sociology and psychology. The limited suppression field also makes sense, as the Combine are still developing their planetary infrastructure. By this time, the citadel in City 17 hasn't even begun construction according to the whiteboard in Alyx. There's some inconsistencies here and there, like a fully fledged AR2 existing and transhuman soldiers very similar to or exact copies of those in HL2 being around, but most Half-Life 2 "lore" is speculation in all fairness.

Basically, normal day in Kazakhstan simulator, just with way less horses.

I played a little over two hours just to be sure SLZ didn't goof this up as bad as I had thought in the first thirty minutes. Unfortunately, the game's simply not very good. I've requested a refund despite going past two hours. This is what I wrote to Steam Support.

"Dodgy performance on anything beyond medium settings on a 3060 Ti despite the obvious graphical downgrades from Boneworks to run on the Quest 2, and ridiculous load times to boot. I think over a tenth of my full playtime was spent loading. Vertical locomotion is buggy, gunplay is clunky, and navigation is unintuitive. The game seems overall unpolished, even unfinished in some aspects. I think I'll wait a few months to see if SLZ pushes a whole bunch of patches to make it live up to the hype, maybe even for a sale, as I don't think there's much less than a full rework to make it worth the 40 dollar price point."

Reading other reviews, everyone that wrote something other than "wow can't wait to play so hype" or "boneworks was great" seems to agree.

Honestly, even going into it I had my doubts. A lot of the hype around this game was founded on the built-in modding tools. User generated content should never be the selling point of a game unless the game is cheap, or even free, and this is a good example of why. Making a playable game isn't going to be a high priority if a bunch of community members can do it for you and you don't need to spend a dime.

tl;dr I was a fool for thinking I could get a VR title that isn't a glorified tech demo, or at least not visually screwed to cater to the Quest 2. Somehow BONELAB manages to be both as well as run like every surface is being rendered all at once.

This mod kicks ass. It's a great, fresh new way to play Half-Life 2. There's very little not to like. HOWEVER, it's very much not a good experience for those who experience motion sickness with smooth locomotion in VR. Many have asked, and I'm sure many more will ask, for teleport locomotion. This isn't really possible, because Half-Life 2 is essentially a movement shooter. It's absolutely possible to play this mod like a cover shooter during combat, the mod team did a really great job being sure that the combat was balanced for that, but getting around the huge open maps and especially using vehicles requires smooth locomotion at the same speed of HL2's movement. This is pretty much a given for any VR port of a desktop game though, so I can't hold that against them.


Besides that, here are my main takeaways after my playthrough.

Pros
-Half-Life 2 VR
-Weapon models don't look out of place
-Weapon selection is about as good as it can be considering the size of Freeman's arsenal
-Well balanced for playing it like a cover shooter, but for those who aren't prone to motion sickness doing the regular HL2 movement shooter combat is viable
-Half Life 2 VR
-Generally just an amazing port of a game I previously thought would be simply unplayable in VR
-Half Life 2 VR

Cons
-Fixed cutscenes (beginning and ending) look janky because flat perspective elements are not displayed in the 3D world
-Pistol sights are not really usable currently
-AR2 reload simply makes me want to cry (behaves like each pulse drum fires one shot and boxes hold 30 drums, lore inaccurate and depressing)
-MP7 never needs to be charged despite being and otherwise behaving like a closed bolt SMG. Considering it's not all that similar to an actual MP7, I think it wouldn't hurt to just say "♥♥♥♥ it, it's fictional open bolt gun manufactured by the Combine" and making it reload accordingly. It is, after all, open bolt in base HL2.
-Vehicles are driven exclusively by the thumbsticks, no motion controls except to aim their weapons. It would be cool if you could actually use the steering wheel and hold left trigger to accelerate or something.

Mehs
-Some weapons are not held, and sorta just float in space where your hand is.
-You can't two-hand the gravity gun. It wouldn't work for it to be controlled by both hands, but to simply have a gripping animation for the left hand would be nice.
-The fingers... curve weirdly.
-Unsuited hands are ugly as sin, suited hands have a fleshy looking red mass at the cutoff point.
-No weapon stabilization options, usually not a problem though

Schizo cultist gun safety simulator. What's not to love?

Awakening is very difficult - I haven't even done it yet. It takes a lot of patience and discipline to get to higher ranks. (Again, gun safety simulator.) Ammunition is quite difficult to get past the second rank, so a lot of the game is deciding whether or not you even need to use your gun in any given situation. Much like in real life, most problems need not be solved with bullets. However, having good fun by just messing with the awesome gun handling without limitations is totally possible thanks to the compound update.

The soundtrack and environments are absolutely wonderful. The voice acting is phenomenal. Yadda yadda, amazing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. I forsee many of my hours being put into this.

Genuinely one of the most awesome things I've ever played. What it lacks in visuals, it makes up for in incredible gameplay and a stunning soundtrack.
