TLDR: its as least as good as any Bethesda Elder Scrolls game, though... that does include bugs.

*update 12/June/25*
I completed the game, the main quest line and a good amount of the side quests to boot.
So... Lets get this out of the way: The devs made some mistakes that's for sure, especially in the 3rd act. Which according to the announcement will be fixed, but not for a while which does leave me feeling they released from Early Access about 4-6 months too early. The question remains the same: Do I recommend the game or not? Which I have to say despite the above (and below) is a resounding yes: The game itself is amazing, I loved it all.

I'm indigenous Northern Irish and i really felt like i was walking through the lands and time of my ancestors. I couldn't help but feel that with the culture and history that this is very close to how they would've viewed the world around them. I want more games like this. (To be fair that does probably mean this review is biased)

More about the game though: I played a minion/elemental mage (because of course i did) and wow spells look and feel amazing. Sure the minion Ai could do with being maybe a bit more aggressive but really they are just fodder whilst i blast down the enemy so not really that big deal. I played with some weapons/wands and a bow for a little just to try but they felt fine, if they are half as good as the spells you'll be fine if this is your play-style. I did look over a lot of the weapons and equipment for other classes (as your character is technically classless) and many were very interesting for sure.

The mage gear was awesome, and finding better gear made huge impacts along with each of the points put into your attributes and perks. It also has a secondary layer of Bethesda style - the more you use the thing the better you are at it. Which just adds to the feeling of power. Its a bit late now but a way to trans-mog gear so powerful gear you find that maybe doesn't quite fit with the rest of your aesthetic can be easily fixed would be great.

*old review*

After today's update (30/5/25) i am happy to currently recommend this game. However this comes with a request and a big caveat.

The caveat:
I feel like the stash bug (where items wouldn't display correctly) should've been found during early access however, this bug has now been fixed. This positive review will be revoked if I find any more major bugs going forward, especially if i feel they should've been dealt with during the early access phase. This also leads me into my request.

The request:
Post the patch notes on patch day. If you want to do "discord first" maybe do that the day before or something. Paying steam customers should not have to wait to see or indeed like i did physically check if the bugs they are seeing are fixed, being worked on, etc. Its not acceptable, I'm personally not sure if its enough to not recommend the title entire... but its a by a narrow margin and I certainly wouldn't think less of anyone who felt it was enough for a negative review.

For now the game is otherwise pretty great. I love the atmosphere and the world. The NPCs can be pretty funny at times, though that might just be my grim sense of humor (no pun intended) and I love how their various aspects will contradict established expectations of the genre. - Disclosure: lets just say I recognize a lot of the accents so... there may be some bias. (AKA if you ever need more VO work done... your good old pal Reaper is available)

Controller support is "partial" in the sense that only a few buttons work, to the point that its completely pointless to play.
No option to disable controller detection either so no option to jury rig your controller as KB/M.

Update 18th June 25
I have been informed that the restriction on Non-PSN account countries has been lifted. So far as I can tell this is true and as promised I am overturning my negative review as well as lifting my boycott on Sony Published games. As mentioned below there has been a lot of misinformation regarding this whole saga, so in the event this is incorrect, someone let me know so I can flip my recommendation again.

Update: 6 May 24

I am aware of SONY removing the requirement for PSN account linking. At the time of writing the game is still no-longer purchasable where PSN is not available. Until that is also reversed its just an empty promise

My review for now remains Negative.

I have also provided some additional information regarding changes to the SONY FAQ situation that i have also became aware of below.

Posted: 5 May:

Let me preface this by saying there has been a lot of misinformation floating around. Current information suggests that players giving negative reviews "gives us more pull in the discussion with Sony" - Spitz (community manager)(* source below).
I would also ask people please refrain from directly targeting the development team with hate etc. There would be no circumstances under which a dev team member would have made or be able to personally reverse decisions such as this. That would be someone higher up in the studio and/or someone from the publisher.

This negative review comes from the current situation over an enforcement for all players to obtain a PSN account to play HELLDIVERS 2. It has come to light that many players find themselves in the position where they either simply weren't aware that this requirement would be enforced. Or in the case of others, a PSN account is either restricted or simply not available in their country. Meaning they will not be able to access the game without breaching other TOS (via a VPN for example).

(edit)
For those not aware SONY changed the wording on their FAQ page regarding PSN. It originally said "Signing in to PSN is optional when playing a PlayStation game on PC" and was changed to "Some PlayStation games may require you to sign in and link to an account for PSN" -
This change was made quietly during this situation. Whilst the change itself is fine, trying to do it secretly is highly suspicious.
(/edit)

The way I see it, this can be resolved 1 of 2 ways.
Firstly there are many legitimate concerns over security so a removal of the requirement for a PSN account would remove that issue entirely. There are reports that this (PSN) is so cheaters etc can be more easily banned and if an alternative cannot be found then the removal of the requirement in countries where PSN accounts are restricted or not available would also be acceptable.

In the event of catastrophic failure in so far as neither of the above can be done then a full refund should be awarded to anyone not able/not wishing to obtain a PSN and this should be provided regardless of time played, this refund should also be provided by the Publisher as this is their decision and should not negatively affect the development studio or its employees. I have always and will continue to advocate for the most amount of people able to play the games they wish to play, so this option should only be considered as a last resort.

I will overturn and/or edit this negative review either in the case of new information coming to light where the information upon which I am acting was incorrect (etc) or hopefully: in the event the issue is fully resolved for all players.

Steam patch notes are not the place to be spreading (or seem to be spreading) misinformation. It appears in recent patch notes the DEV feels the mask mandates etc are lies "Be confident, unafraid of the LIES" when talking about "take off the FCKN MASKS".
This is not ok and I'm expressing that through this negative recommendation.

*Full disclosure I am a New world Creator*
Update - 12/11/22
This is another situation where Steam could really benefit from a neutral review. I've returned to the game as part of the "Return to Aeternum" event. And after a year (ish) there have been some pretty neat improvements. It's "better" and I'm enjoying it again and what's more with the fresh start (one of the prerequisites of the event) I'm able to join and play my friends. For now, I feel as though the game has earned a "not negative" review.

*Full disclosure I am a New world Creator, review written 06/December/21*
This is a tough one because the game has/had so much potential. When the game was announced and in the preview/closed beta/open beta, the game did look like it was going to be a lot of fun and something I'd log into to play with friends and have fun. I liked the crafting system and how that looked like it was going to work, it ticked a lot of boxes and just needed some more content and polishing up all the issues discovered in pre- / post-release. I won't go into the issues I had with the server I started on as that is not the game's fault, but suffice to say that when they eventually got the free server swap token working, I used it to join some other friends playing.

Except I couldn't, the problem is that the companies (guilds) are tied to the faction system, everyone in the company must be in the same faction, annoying (and a little silly) but OK fine. Problem is that once a faction controls a majority of the map you can no longer join that one, it's not I don't get why but there are better ways to handle that. So after switching to a new server if you weren't already in the corresponding faction to join the new company, and the faction controlled a majority of the map (something that was likely considering how long it took to get the token system working correctly), you cannot play with your friends.

The game has lost about 84% of its release player base to the point that after having to expand the servers at the beginning, they are now merging some of the smaller ones as they simply don't have the player base to function correctly. I also learn that the way Gear Score and "watermarks" work has essentially wrecked end game crafting and trade if I understand it correctly. I started feeling like "maybe when they sell the server swaps and/or faction swap" but this is a problem that was introduced and I'm not (nor should any player) be OK with having the solution sold to me.

TLDR: The game should've been great and was botched. I cannot play with my friends in an MMO and I just don't want to play any more because group work is essential, and yea I can join randoms etc, but there's helping out your company (guild) too which I cannot do. In fact... I'm actively working against them technically.
(Edit: paragraphing for readability, updated previous review also with some more language tool (spelling grammar checker) suggestions also)

Hello Everyone,
I recently live streamed a quick look of Despot's Game: Dystopian Army Builder. This was the Early Access launch version of the game and whilst I did see some minor spelling and grammatical issues (which post patch may already be fixed at the time of writing) it was a very fun time. I'll be trying to check in on the game throughout its Early Access development. For now I am happy to recommend the title. Take a look at the attached VOD if you want to see for yourself:

Honestly this game ticks so many boxes for me. The game is clearly made with love and whilst this may sound strange I try to avoid playing it outside the runs on stream. Just so i don't get burnt out before launch, which I'm so excited about. Its a 1 person development team so updates take a little while but I am very thankful that the dev takes their time. The dev in question is as active as time allows and the community built around the game (at least so far as i can see) is really helpful and engaged.

There is a 24 episode (about 3 to 4 hours long each) playlist over on my YT here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlZ-YYhTadiZEAyV6LL-lrUTzS6B2c6hc

It is sadly incomplete (though i do get pretty far) as an error with the steam cloud caused me to lose about 4 months worth of progress

(Edit: Playlist inclusion and minor spelling fixes)

(Moving this from the base game to DLC specific)

Odyssey review: It wont let me review a game pre-launch which is stupid.
With the launch in 14 days (as of writing) I have to take the unfortunate position of not recommending the DLC as it stands. There are bugs that have been in the alpha since the first week and I really don't see that improving in 2 weeks. Its not that its not fun, it is its a blast but it is not ready for full launch. Especially with it skipping beta phase (from said alpha) and going full launch, that should be a massive red flag in anyones books. They are closing the Alpha shortly for 2 weeks of no doubt abusive crunch. I'll be more than happy to be proven wrong on this.

(Edit for dev response)
Oh yea please don't misunderstand i totally get it, i just think going full launch on the DLC in <2 weeks is a bit rushed. Like i say the DLC is good fun its just the main bug i ran into was not being able to operate screens like on the Restore Power missions (on the power centre console) so missions are are uncompletable. Which is fine in Alpha, but at full launch not so much.

Hey CMDR,

Our QA team and developers are working as best as they can to provide players with the best experience possible with the full release of Odyssey.

As it stand, we've received over 5000 bug reports throughout the public alpha and it takes tremendous amount of time to investigate each and every one of them. So some high priority bugs will take precedence over others.

We do appreciate your understanding and patience.

The creeping, crippling existential dread will kill you regardless if you own this game or not.

In all seriousness: Despite the game not really being my thing, I do see the appeal. For me it's a little overwhelming there's a little too much going on for me to keep track of (not the games fault). It's about brutal discovery, you have to be willing to experiment and live or die by the consequences.
Though I will say you can sometimes get trapped into what might be at that time an un-win-able scenario.

So why a yes recommendation? Just because it isn't for me, doesn't mean it isn't good. Besides, it will always be there for me to return to, maybe on the next run, it will all click and true to my name I will be the end of everything... *ahem* I mean... look at gameplay do your research if you think it's your thing, go for it (or not, I'm not the boss of you (yet))
