My opinion on the game might change in the future depending on how things go but for now, I cannot recommend this to anyone who's looking for the experience from SWAT 4

Honestly, to make it clear, the game is feeling more like the classic Rainbow Six games despite it originally being showcased as a spiritual successor to SWAT 4 (one of the titles from the Police Quest franchise that came out in 2005). Ok sure, replicating the gameplay of the classic Rainbow Six titles isn't exactly a bad thing but that's not the reason why I got this game. I got it because I'm looking for another game that is willing to replicate the unique gameplay of SWAT 4.

First of all, what are the main issues?

Ignoring the optimization for now, the biggest issue with this game (as of writing this review) is the suspect AI. They feel less like human beings and more like terminators. And an inexperienced thug somehow has the same reflexes and tactic of a highly trained mercenary. Not only that, they also literally shoot you through solid walls from time to time and they have the accuracy of an average Global Elite player from Counter-Strike even if they're running past you at a hundred miles per hour. The suspects are also professional Rainbow Six Siege players I guess because there's so many times where I got one tapped without knowing and it turns out they saw one pixel of my helmet through a gap that's as narrow as a wormhole. You can tell me to "git gud" all you want, but I'm pretty sure suspects in real life don't behave that way even if they're highly trained killers.

Secondly, they never surrender.

You would think that, the AI being crafted to feel like real human beings, they would have some fear inside their head, and some self-preservative instincts. But nope, nearly every suspect you encounter is willing to die as if they know they're gonna respawn anyways. This is the biggest factor that killed my interest for this game. The game encourages you to arrest suspects rather than injuring them or killing them, but the AI goes against that. Less-Lethal weapons rarely work since unlike SWAT 4, the suspects will be completely fine again just mere seconds after u spray them down with pepperballs. And not only that you literally only get 100 ms to react to them pointing their gun at you again (Well below the human reaction time).

Meanwhile, when we look back at SWAT 4 (the game that Ready or Not was initially trying to replicate), the differences are night and day. Suspects actually feel afraid to spot a SWAT team rushing in, often running away somewhere to hide instead of immediately opening fire (if they even have their guns out that is). And when they're finally confronted by the player, the gameplay shifts entirely, and the game turns into a nervous standoff between you and the suspect, constantly observing the suspect's hand / arm movement and determining whether you have to open fire or not. And sometimes, suspects will fake surrender, only for them to pick up their gun again and take aim (even then, the game gives you enough time to react). And the best part is, nearly every mission can be completed without you firing a single bullet (if RNG really loves you that is) because of how compliant the suspects are. Sure, not all of them just immediately surrender upon sighting you, but a lot of them are intimidated by your presence and will surrender for the sake of their lives. Not to mention, flashbangs and Less-Lethal equipments are goated because those things pretty much nearly guarantees the chances for the suspects to surrender (although they're not effective on late game missions due to suspects wearing body armor and gas masks).

The beauty of SWAT 4 was the fact that you couldn't just open fire on every suspect you see, but instead you have to hold back your instincts to fire upon the suspects and observe their behaviour. Ready or Not currently has none of that.

Ready or Not (as of this moment) feels more like another tactical shooter that's about shooting anyone you see before they shoot back at you. And the "Yell for Compliance" mechanic feels almost like an afterthought from everything mentioned above (Like I said, in SWAT 4, suspects will be intimidated by you yelling at them, hence surrendering most of the time).
You might enjoy this game if you're someone desperate for a modern title replicating the classic Rainbow Six formula.
However, if you're someone like me who's played SWAT 4, have beaten the game multiple times and grown up loving it, you'll be disappointed by the state of AI right now and how it failed to capture the spirit of SWAT 4.

VOID Interactive seriously need to overhaul the suspect AI if they truly want this game to be a spiritual successor to SWAT 4, because if not, then it might as well be just another tactical shooter that you can find on the market right now.

Onto the optimization

I can't really say much since my PC is already potato, and I always only get 30 fps on average.
But all I'm gonna say is, I've played other games that run on Unreal Engine 4 that look and run better.

Conclusion
If you're someone like me who's looking to fill the gap that the SWAT series left, your options are sadly limited to just SWAT 4 [2005] (which is only available on GOG as Gold Edition).
But if you've already bought the game or just trying some sort of method to replicate SWAT 4's gameplay, your best option at the moment is to rely on mods since there's a lot of mods already that will actively nerf the suspect AI or try their best to replicate SWAT 4's suspect AI (but I would say, even all the mods cannot fix the suspect having aimbots and wallhacks).

I'm aware VOID Interactive is a small indie studio and this game being their first ever project. Which is why every time I dump on this game's crappy mechanics I've been saying "for now" or "at the moment" since I do feel like there is enough time for VOID to examine the mistakes they've made and turn this situation around and maybe, just maybe, create a worthy spiritual successor to SWAT 4.

It's been nearly 20 years since SWAT 4 was released and there's still no other experiences like it. I genuinely hope that VOID is willing to take the golden chance and fill the gap that SWAT 4 had left in everyone's hearts.

Edit from December of 2024: It seems VOID is slowly but surely adding back features from SWAT 4, which gives me hope for the future of this game than anything else.
Would I still recommend it? Well, if you've got a beefy PC then go ahead, since the game is slowly finding back to its roots.

Absolutely phenomenal experience

This game is just perfection, but hey it's from Valve so I'm not surprised
What I am surprised though is the fact that this game managed to appeal to every single people.
Hell, I'm not a fan of puzzle games nor I'll ever be. Yet this game managed to attract me and gave me one of the best gaming experiences ever.

This game does all the things right:
- Story
- Characters
- Gameplay
- Visuals (despite being a game from 2011, it's still looking good to this day)
- Writing
- Audio (+ Music)
- Level Layout and etc.

The story and characters are one of the best I've ever experienced, and the puzzles are actually fun to solve (probably because it also rely on your knowledge about Source engine's physics and not just portal all the time). And the fact that this game is still sitting on top of the board as the #1 Game on Steam (of all time) even after more than a decade, truly shows how timeless and outstanding this game is.

This is a game I'll recommend to *anyone* whether they like puzzles or not, this game is just phenomenal.
Just buy it, it's only 10 bucks and it's worth every single penny. (although, for me a friend of mine gifted me because I apparently forgot it was in my wishlist but hey, thanks Nick)

I totally recommend buying this DLC, not only it can give you access to one of the best soundtracks made by one of the best composers, it will also port all the tracks from this game to PAYDAY 2 automatically. So it's basically just one DLC that will take effect on both versions of PAYDAY (+ it can also give you free masks in PAYDAY: The Heist!)

And of course, keep those helmets flying

Long story short, it's somewhat of an ok game in 2023. But it's no longer as good as it was back when it was in its prime
