This is a retrospective review, given that I've not played in ages, but when I did - this was one of the most enthralling games I've ever played. This game is what FPS melee combat should be, and both the team play and 1v1 play (duel) modes were an absolute treat to play.

The customization system is awesome, the art is beautiful, the levels are interesting.

The only flaw was in the high-skill balance; when I played, certain builds were a little too strong and annoying to play against, but I still got a really, really fun 300+ hours out of this game. This wasn't 300 "grindy" hours, but 300 entertaining, engaging, and memorable hours.

Respect!

NO SPOILERS:

Disclaimer: I played through the main story arc on standard difficulty; I have not yet 100%'d the game.

DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM
The game was challenging enough to keep me engaged and carefully considering my options and gameplay, but not frustratingly difficult. I'd say it'd probably be a challenging experience for people new to gaming, but very manageable for experienced gamers. I played through the entire game on standard difficulty without dying or otherwise "failing" once, but I had some really close calls.

PERFORMANCE: 4/5
The game never felt unplayable, and ran pretty smoothly. However, there were occasional stutters (especially the first few times I played the game), and occasional frame drops (playing on high settings, 2K res).

BUG FREE EXPERIENCE: 4/5
There were basically no noticeable bugs, except one: The mouse aim sensitivity seemed to occasionally randomly change when interacting with menus and objects. Maybe there's a game mechanic I'm not aware of, but it seems like a bug, and was pretty jarring. Otherwise, gameplay felt really smooth and predictable.

GAMEPLAY LOOP: 5/5
Pacific Drive is an extremely unique gameplay loop! It's, what, an extraction...survival...racing game? Very cool. I thoroughly enjoyed the main loop, which had me engaged throughout the entire experience. I also really enjoyed the garage "breaks" where I'd rest and prepare for the next trip. This really is an achievement in game design, and I highly recommend Pacific Drive for this alone. I also really enjoyed all of the various anomaly interactions, and I'm sure I managed to miss a bunch. They are creative and interesting, ranging from "oh that's cute" to "HELL NAH I gotta get out of here!".
Most importantly, I'm glad this game didn't lean too hard into horror; I'm not a fan of that genre, and was relieved to find that the game is just... not that scary. There are no jump scares that I could think of.

VISUAL ART: 5/5
The graphics are cartoonish and stylized (i.e. not hyper realistic), but set a really nice and coherent mood. The anomalies were interesting and the environments really set the tone, especially in the later parts of the game. Where this game really shines, in my experience, is the design language; it's really clear what certain things are (resources, hazards, items) at various points in the game. Most of the "basics" of the gameplay loop felt really well communicated, while still leaving room for strangeness and unfamiliarity with the anomalies. It'd be easy to overlook this, but it was really well done in my opinion.

AUDIO: 5/5
No complaints here, the vibes were on point. The radio soundtrack worked phenomenally well, and the various environmental sounds were great and fit the world they were in.

VOICE ACTING: 5/5
Really good, all VA in this game was phenomenal, and the actors really sold the emotions of various intense moments in the game. Bravo!

MILD SPOILERS - STORY / WRITING: 4/5 (POTENTIAL LIGHT SPOILERS!!!)
Honestly, this felt like the weakest part of the game. The story really had me hooked throughout the entire game, but the ending felt anticlimactic. I feel there is room for story expansion via DLC, but I was a bit let down by how the game kind of just... ends. To avoid spoiling anything, I won't go into details, but really, it just added more questions. However, apart from that, it was pretty fantastic, and I enjoyed both it and all the myriad of side stories and lore.
(END LIGHT SPOILERS)

OVERALL:
I highly recommend Pacific Drive. It features a really unique and excellently crafted gameplay loop, an interesting world, beautiful art, is overall a very special experience that I'll fondly remember. I look forward to future game expansions!

Honestly, as a civ 5 and 6 vet, I'm really enjoying this installment. I like the reduced micromanagement from the removal of builders and combat engineers, and I actually don't mind the removal of civilian management.

I also really like the Commanders mechanic, it's made army planning and strategizing a lot more interesting, with concentrated fronts being more important than ever.

In particular, I actually like the age transitions; I like having tangible and rewarding goals in each era, and the opportunity to pivot and climb back each reset provides. I like having different civ strategies and planning around it, and it's resulted in probably my favourite game of civ in all my 1000+ hrs across the titles, where I've crawled back from a bad early game into a victory race against the AI that culminated in a really tight military campaign involving - for the first time - actual use of ground, air, and naval forces simultaneously. This game has also been the first time I've used a nuke as a matter of actual necessity, using it to destroy the enemy space race infrastructure while they work on the game-winning project.

Overall, a really fun and memorable time.

I do have some gripes, of course - the UI is lacking and often missing key info (i.e, unit count vs commander capacity for age transitions, time to celebration) and key features (no pin dropping really hampers planning). Also, I can't say that I'm happy about day 1 DLCs, but I guess you gotta make money somehow in this industry.
I also wish the AI would prioritize air defence more, as right now getting early air units seems a bit overpowered.

My other gripes are balance related; playing around settlement cap can be tough, and I think the influence loss for capturing civs can be a bit debilitating, but this is probably a skill issue, and I enjoy playing around it. I just find it weird that Democracy is the best war ideology (over fascism?) given the happiness from specialists policy. All of these are things that I expect will be adjusted throughout the patches.

So yeah, I recommend it. I'm having a great time.

This is a genre-defining title.

I have no doubt that in a decade from now we will be looking back at Ultrakill as one of the more important games in the FPS genre.

10/10.
And it isn't even finished yet.

Seriously, this is easily one of the most impressive early-access titles I've ever played.

I don't have the time to go into details at the moment - one day I will, surely.
But for now - this game is a must play if you are into arena shooters and or mobility games. There is nothing else quite like it, it's the pinnacle of the FPS genre at the moment.

I owe this game a proper review, but didn't end up finishing it.. yet. I will one day. For now - definitely recommended.

In my opinion, It is a hardcore game for experienced gamers, so people new to gaming might struggle.

For now, this review will have to do: This is one of the most impressive RPGs I've ever played. It innovates in many ways I don't have the time to describe now. It is, without any doubt, worth the money.

But be warned - the combat is hard to learn. I played this game after sinking many hours into Mordhau and still found that I needed some practice before I could comfortably fight the way I want. Fortunately, there's a practice arena :)

THIS REVIEW IS SPOILER-FREE!

I knew about this game for a while, but ultimately was "sold" it when I played the demo at a gaming convention. I was hooked - I knew I'd be buying this game when I got home. Oh, there IS a free demo!! Download it and give the game a shot. You should be able to tell if you like it quite quickly.

Anyway, I think a very important piece of information which will be the most relevant to many, is that the main story arc is quite short - I completed it in 8 hours (at which point I wrote this review), including much time spent exploring (and dying).

But I still recommend the game. I smell a lot of replay value; the game has a unique combat flow, and really succeeds in scratching the itch for a movement-combat-puzzle game. It reminds me a lot of Doom Eternal in this sense (although perhaps slightly less mechanically complex), and definitely captures a similar vibe - pumping music, twitch game-play, punishing but rewarding combat, soaring movement, and of course - the power fantasy that you have to work for.

Anyway, now for the long part: let's break this down.

COMBAT:
One shot one kill, for you and for the enemies. I love this - it makes the weapons feel meaningful, and makes you feel vulnerable, meaning you don't feel like you got the win for free. Deaths aren't a big setback - just hit R and you're instantly back in the action (and I mean INSTANTLY, they did this really well, technically). The levels are basically formatted like puzzles that you need to figure out. There are many ways to slice the onion here, and its fun to try and see which approach will work in each puzzle. Some were particularly awesome, some a little less, but overall I enjoyed all of them.

You also receive several skills you can use, that charge up throughout combat. This means there are even MORE approaches to the combat rooms, meaning you can suit them to your playstyle. The game, for better or worse, doesn't force you to use all of your skills (like the aforementioned Doom Eternal does), which means its quite flexible.

This is further enhanced by the awesome "upgrades" system. No spoilers as to how this works, but I'm impressed, I like their implementation of upgrades a LOT.

In this paragraph I was going to talk about the bosses, but it felt a little spoiler-y, so you'll have to see for themselves. How much you like them will depend on your style of gaming.

MOVEMENT:
Delicious. Dash, slide, wall climb, vault, grapple hook, fly... A parkour extravaganza. I felt they did this aspect of the game extremely well and it really makes the game. No complaints. Sometimes vaulting was a little clunky, but this was usually when I was trying to reach areas I thought were secrets (they were not, more on that later).

DIFFICULTY:
Difficult. The game is not for someone new to video games - it requires a good sense of positioning and movement, high-speed reactions, and a very solid grasp of mouse+keyboard controls. Intermediate to expert gamers will appreciate it, but people new to computer games will probably rage quit. The game does a solid job of "teaching" its mechanics, but not to a "this is my first computer game" level. I don't think this game was designed with that in mind, and in my opinion (as an experienced gamer), this is for the better.

MAP / LEVEL DESIGN:
Overall really great. Some non-combat parts felt like Roblox obstacle courses on steroids (jumping puzzles), which some players may dislike. I didn't mind them. Some special parts in the game had you playing with limited parkour capacity, which I didn't like as it made them feel artificially slow. These parts usually had some other alterations to the map (no spoilers!) which made them interesting, though.

Other parts had you playing a jumping puzzle while fighting, which I really liked.

STORY:
Interesting, but not mind-blowing. I could kind of predict where they were going overall, but the details surprised me. It was interesting enough for me to stop and listen, but not interesting enough for me to really get invested in it like some story-driven games, but that's fair enough as the game is primarily about the combat.

No spoilers here, see for yourself - but I wouldn't buy the game JUST for the story. That's not what this is about.

GRAPHICS:
Beautiful. Not masterpiece beautiful, but definitely more than beautiful enough. The world feels like a cyberpunk hell-scape and sells it well with all these little visual storytelling details.

I also thought the enemy design was really cool; the bosses especially.

MUSIC:
Slaps. Featuring a soundtrack by Daniel Deluxe, the music does not disappoint, and fits the game perfectly. I literally turned down the other volume tracks but kept the music up so I could hear it more prominently. They nailed it - it's juicy.

EXPLORATION:
A little underwhelming. There are optional collectibles hidden well, but not impossibly, which is great. However, I found myself reaching many "out of bounds" areas that could have been made into secret areas. Maybe there ARE secret areas that I'm just too unskilled to reach, I dunno. I found the overwhelming majority of collectibles, and there IS an upgrade which helps you find them (but doesn't outright tell you how, which I liked).

It's not bad, but could be better.

OVERALL GAME DESIGN:
Really good. All of the auxiliary systems support the main game flow really well; the way the mechanics and enemies are trickled in and taught are great, the upgrade system is great, the combat is awesome, the collectibles and customizables are cool, and the game flows and plays beautifully.

RATING:
Rating? I don't know if its fair to rate this game on a 1-10 scale. It fills a niche, and it fills it well. Could they have done more with the mechanics? Maybe, I'm not good enough of a game designer to suggest any improvements.

I would call this "Melee-mode Doom". I love it, and I'm eager to see where it goes with its after-story game-play and alternate modes. Is it flawless? No. Is it an amazing, special game? Definitely.

8/10, 9/10 even. The number is meaningless. The vibe is not!

I will one day give this game a more detailed review, but for now:

If you are a hardcore gamer, you will enjoy Noita. It is a punishing game that rewards experimentation, and rewards experience with satisfying dominance over its world.

However - even when you get the right set of tools in a randomized run - you are still vulnerable. Your death is always one drop of liquid away. It keeps you on your feet, and it keeps your adrenaline pumping.

This game is extremely tough and unforgiving. It is TRIVIAL to die, which resets your run. This can be frustrating.
This IS frustrating. But that's part of playing a hardcore roguelike.

This game features extremely deep "engineering" mechanics which are directly tied to your success in it.
This is a game where you try out a new thing - and probably die as a result. But this time, you know a bit more; and as you learn more and more, suddenly the mechanic that killed you will "click" and boom - you know how to make a magic wand that is more akin to "Tsar Bomba" than "Avada Kedavra".

The game world is absolutely laden with secrets and hidden mechanics. Some of them are almost impossible to figure out on your own, though. But most are totally "discoverable".

My only gripe with this game is that there is a "mid game" in your player development in which you are good enough to be comfortable with the game, but not good enough to really turn ANY run into a "win" run (in which you can discover secrets, IMO the primary goal of this game).
In this mid-game, you'll find yourself not random-rolling the "right" tools that you want, meaning you get frustrating periods of being stuck at the starter levels with "meh" equipment. It's not that fun.

But when you get the right tools.. ohhhhhhhh man. It makes it all worth it - even if you immediately die... because for one moment - you were the GRIM REAPER of Noita. Death Incarnate. The apex predator.

As you get better with the game, you find that the game gives you the "right tools" more and more often... because they were (almost) always there. Right under your nose - but you were not experienced enough to see it.

Sometimes you just get awful runs though, that are only "viable" for the really, really experienced players.

TL;DR:
This is a game about exploration and science. I personally felt like a toddler again while playing this: experimenting, exploring the world for the first time, and eventually - much more powerful than I really was. It's thrilling.

Also this game is completely whimsical. It's art-style and theme is beautiful, curious, and entertaining at all levels.

A number rating doesn't do this game justice. Maybe 8/10 because of the "balance" problems of the "mid game", but not in a traditional sense. This is a GOOD game. This is a SPECIAL game. It is unique and a ton of fun; a breathe of fresh air.
But man, it can be frustrating sometimes. But that's part of the appeal.

The only part of the game that I think is outright bad is the randomized starting loadouts. For reasons that will become clear, not starting the game with "water" (or an analog) is just an outright hindrance, and manifests as needing to find a source of water ASAP. It's not fun. You can probably fix that with a mod relatively trivially; but I haven't, because I bet one day I'll figure out how to use all the starting "potions" to my advantage.

SPOILER FREE:

This is a GOOD game.

**CONTROL / CORE GAMEPLAY: **
The game is a rogue-lite: Each "run", the world and available items/bonuses is slightly randomized.
However, there are ways (which I will not spoil) to "influence" the randomness, which lets you design "builds".
These builds can sometimes be a bit too strong, making fights easier than they should be.
This can be largely "fixed" through the "selective difficulty" mechanics that are revealed throughout the game. No spoilers here - but the mechanics (which are obvious when you run into them) are a really clever design trick to match the game's difficulty to the player.

However, some builds are just outright broken, whilst being not "fun" to play. This is a classic problem in game design, where players will min-max the fun out of the game. The solution here is easy: don't use the clunky OP builds (you'll know them when you see them, if you do see them). There's NOTHING forcing you to do it, and the benefit is quite minor compared to playing less broken builds and actually having fun.

The combat and controls themselves are tight and satisfying.
My only gripe with the main "flow" of the game is the camera: it is locked to your character, which makes it a bit jumpy and abrupt. Since the arenas are often quite small with respect to the viewport, I can't see a good reason why not to implement some form of inertial camera (at least as an option).

This game can also feel a bit "button mashy", but that boils down to skill; the better builds do not reward button mashing, and button mashing becomes less viable as the difficulty is increased, which is largely in-line with your expected progression as a player.

The mechanics are surprisingly deep; the true depth of the game is only revealed as the game progresses. There's a lot of room for experimenting with builds and mastering the combat, despite the seemingly simple fighting mechanics. Basically, the build options are revealed as the game expects you to get better, which is a good thing, since its not overwhelming as a result. You don't need to play optimally to enjoy this game! Find what's fun for you.

**STORY:**
The story is way more immersive than it should be. The voice acting is at worst "decent", and at best - excellent. It is a matter of taste. The story it self is probably a bit predictable (I still haven't finished it), but the way its presented as part of the gameplay is... addicting! I don't have much time to play games, meaning some times I need to take a hiatus from a title: but whenever I come back to play the game - even if I don't really "feel" like it when I do - I almost immediately fall in love with the story again, eager to discover more and more of the plot through the gameplay.

The game is filled with little "conditions" and minor story arcs that pop up during gameplay as "side objectives". If you are the kind of person who gets "invested" in games, this is really fun and leaves you eager to discover more of the story, trying out special builds to try and trigger special conditions and interactions, either because a character outright hints at it, or because you think the character will react to it (they usually do!).

Here is the main success of the game! Despite being a gameplay-based rogue-lite, it perfectly integrates the story into the core loop. You are NOT punished for losing - it actually ALSO progresses the story, which is a unique mechanic that, in my opinion, has revolutionized contemporary game design. Well, you might get mocked a bit by some in-game characters.. or consoled by others.

**MUSIC / ART:**

The art work is phenomenal, and the music is amazing. This OST has some absolute bangers in it.
The character designs are incredible, the maps are gorgeous, the weapons are awesome... Really, 10/10. Flawless.

**PERFORMANCE / BUGS:**
I've played for some 50-60 hours now, and I've only ran into two bugs:
1) For one version of the game, I had some weird flickering effect on my character during the death animation (for losing a run). This was "fixed" relatively quickly and I presume it was caused by my graphics drivers.

2) Sometimes if you progress a bit too fast, characters will react in ways that make you think "wait, didn't we already establish this?". It's infrequent and mostly a result of me probably being a little too good/well-built for that part of the game.

THATS IT. Seriously. It astonishes me just how unbelievably polished this game is.

**OVERALL:**

Personally: nothing of what I described above warrants losing a "point". This is a 10/10 game. The goooooood stuff.
Is it worth buying at full price? I'm not going to rummage through your wallet. For me - absolutely.

The Talos Principle
- 10/10

In this review, I will try to say as much as I can without spoiling ANYTHING.

On it's surface, The Talos Principle seems like a normal puzzle/adventure game. You solve puzzles, collect rewards, and press on. However, as you progress further and further, you start to realize the game's brilliance; everything is perfectly paced. The Talos Principle capitalizes off of your curiosity - and you will be curious .

THE LEVEL DESIGN

The level design is great; every level is gorgeous, and somehow makes you want to discover... more. Every inch of every level is expertly crafted. Additionally, the soundtrack in this game is amazing, and works perfectly with the levels.

The puzzles themselves are great. They are creative, challenging and extremely well thought out. None of them felt corny, or like they were unfair; if anything, I found myself sometimes feeling that I was the one who was cheating them! Many of the puzzles had several ways to solve them, leaving you to find your own creative approaches to every puzzle.

Some of the challenges were extremely difficult; but they all felt very rewarding to finally best.

THE NARRATIVE:

This game would not be complete without it's narrative and story. The story is extremely interesting, and makes you press on-wards for clues. It sprinkles lore elements throughout the levels - both in audio and text form - and tells a compelling story. If you are capable of and enjoy immersing yourself in fictional worlds, and enjoy reading, you will find yourself stimulated and entertained. I cannot say much here without giving anything away; so I won't.

There is more than meets the eye to The Talos Principle.

The Talos Principle is a puzzle game through and through - but you would be foolish to think that the only puzzles are the ones happening on your screen. This game, under the guise of the puzzles and the story it tells, shines a mirror at you; it makes you consciously not only scrutinize the world on your screen, but also your very own decisions and beliefs; all without breaching the fourth wall. This kind of well-crafted experience is exceedingly rare, and The Talos Principle pulls it off flawlessly.

Because of this, the game transcends itself; something which you will realize (hopefully) after enjoying the entirety of the game and coming back to read what others thought.

I HIGHLY recommend this game. It is an outstanding experience, and I will remember this game for years to come. This game sets the benchmark for what an adventure/puzzle game should be.

If you're thinking about buying it; Do it, before looking up any of the game's content. This game is best experienced blind, with zero prior knowledge of the puzzles, worlds, and what to expect. It's worth it. If you can't buy it at full price, wait for a sale. It IS worth the full price, though.

Croteam - Bravo.

TL;DR
: Masterpiece. Finished it (100%?) in 30 hours; enjoyed every minute. It is challenging, rewarding, and extremely memorable, with secrets hidden all over its world, beckoning to be unearthed.

However; this game rewards those who have the patience to read bits of lore and immerse themselves in the world. If you skipped straight to the TL;DR, this is something to keep in mind. If you're just looking for brain-training puzzles, this game might not feel outstanding to you. Make no mistake; the puzzles are fun, difficult, and creative; but they are really only the tip of the iceberg here.

I bought this game on sale, DLC and all. If you have money to spend, it's easily worth full price, and the developers deserve it for their staggering work.

I eagerly look forward to seeing what the DLC has in store.
